For an actor like Kamal Hassan, known for his versatility, this could have been the perfect role. Hassan was the first choice for the title role in southside director Vayalar Madhav's soon-to-be-released fantasy film, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.
But it is the fact that Kamal Hassan is an "over exposed" actor that stopped the director from approaching the star.
Kamal ka actor
Says Madhav, "Kamal Hassan's body language, acting skills and style would have been perfect for the role of Kakathiya, the head of eunuchs, who is more than 200 years old (this is a fantasy film) and has been doing extensive research on how to transform eunuchs into normal human beings.
But when an actor becomes a star, the audience tends to see the star instead of the character he is portraying. That was when we zeroed in on Tinnu Anand."
"Tinnu may not be a star but he's a great performer," explains Madhav. According to the director, the script is a universal one, which is why it has been made in four languages simultaneously (Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu). Others in the film include Divya Dutta, Neha Pendse and Suhashini Mulay. The film features child artistes too, one of who plays a eunuch.
Special visitors
When word of this film got around, the crew had a number of eunuchs visiting the sets. "That we were working on a story that features eunuchs was what drew them all in large numbers to our sets. We have had over 300 eunuchs from Mumbai, Rajasthan, Chennai and Hyderabad visiting the sets, wishing us luck, dancing and performing pujas.
All have been featured in the film as well. I cannot expect them to act, but I've got them to feature in dance sequences and in on-screen rituals and pujas," says Madhav. |
