By Preetika Rana

Starring Ranbir Kapoor and Nargis Fakhri, Rockstar is a film that traces the journey of a nave Delhi University student – from soul-searching to self-destruction. Janardhan Jakhar, or JJ, (Ranbir Kapoor) is the ideal boy-next-door who idolizes Jim Morrison and harbors dreams of becoming a rockstar.

However, to metamorphose into a rockstar, his mentor insists that he must embark on a life-altering journey of love and heartbreak. The film traces his journey to his goal while following his love affair with college diva, Heer Kaul (Nargis Fakhri), after she is married.

Here is a round-up of what critics had to say about the film:

Eros International

NDTV's Bollywood critic, Saibal Chatterjee labeled the movie as "strangely static." Though he claimed that the film initially "shows a fair degree of promise," he added that it lacked a narrative to sustain itself.

"Rockstar is a gig gone wrong. And that is sad," he wrote. The critic further noted that the film lacked conviction.

"JJ's transformation from a simple-minded lad to a super-successful rock performer and his struggle to cope with the pressures of mass adulation springs no surprises. Neither does Heer's suppressed urge for freedom."

However Mr. Chatterjee was all praise for director, Imtiaz Ali, cinematographer, Anil Mehta, and music composer, A.R. Rahman.

"Anil Mehta's cinematography is flawless all the way through," he said, adding that, "A.R. Rahman's outstandingly lively and eclectic musical score presents a wide range of sounds blended into a harmonious whole."

Mr. Chatterjee rated the film two-and-a-half out of five.

In an India Today review headlined "All Soul, No Spine" film critic Kaveree Bamzai noted that the film "lacks discipline." Like Mr. Chatterjee, Ms. Bamzai echoed that the film began on an "electric note" only to go "downhill" thereafter.

The critic further said that though "there are moments of great beauty in the film" the audience began to get "increasingly frustrated" as too many things were left unexplained. She noted the difficulty of portraying a romance within the conservative strictures of Hindi cinema.

"I think one problem with the film is that it is about a grand passion, and mainstream Hindi cinema is not equipped to show a grand romance except in the most inane form. So while the young couple kiss each other with great gusto, they can't do much more," she wrote.

She also critized Imitiaz Ali for repeating his "trademark obsessions" throughout the film, which she said included incessant foreign travel by the protagonists.

On a positive note, she commended A.R. Rahman, describing his music as "the soul of the film."

Ms. Bamzai gave the movie two stars out of five.

Writing for the Times of India, critic Nikhat Kazmi seemed particularly impressed, noting that the film was "an absolutely engaging affair."

Terming Imtiaz Ali as the "new age Yash Chopra" she added that "love literally smoulders under his narrative, albeit in a completely modern idiom."

Rating the movie four out of five, Ms. Kazmi further said that the highlight of the film was the "high tension" and "high-on passion" between the two protagonists.

"One is that Ali cannot seem to decide whether he wants to make a love story or a story about a rockstar. As a result, it becomes neither — both aspects get diluted and do not help the film" she said.

"The film is a milestone in Ranbir Kapoor's career as an actor," she wrote. She also praised A. R. Rahman's score.

"Ranbir and Rahman are the stars" said Shilpa Jamkhandikar on Reuters' Bollywood blog, India Masala. Though Ms. Jamakhandikar noted that Ranbir Kapoor "puts his heart and soul" into his performance, she underlined that there were "two major problems" with the film.

"One is that Ali cannot seem to decide whether he wants to make a love story or a story about a rockstar. As a result, it becomes neither — both aspects get diluted and do not help the film," she said.

"The second major problem is Nargis Fakhri — the lady is pretty, but she cannot act," Ms. Jamkhandikar added.

The writer also noted that several incidents in the film, including Ranbir Kapoor's bitterness, seemed to be "blown out of proportion" and was "a little too forced."

"Rockstar works on so many levels, but it fails miserably on so many more — I recommend you watch it for Ranbir Kapoor," she concluded.

Rockstar Has Excellent First Day

Saturday 11th November 2011 09.00 IST

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Rockstar had an excellent first day of around 10 crore nett as per early estimates despite the mixed reports. The multiplex business was excellent across India with high end multiplexes being phenomenal. Despite the mixed reports evening and night shows at multiplexes were 80-100% at multiplexes in big cities. Mysore circuit was extraordinary. The Delhi NCR area was also excellent but UP was just average.

The opening is mainly due to the star power of Ranbir Kapoor who is a craze amongst the urban youth and the youthfull theme of the film and now normal weekend growth can take the weekend business to around 32-33 crore nett which would be an excellent total for a film being carried by just multiplexes.

It will be interesting to seen how the film goes over the weekend but looks certain to go over 30 crore nett which was the weekend number suggested by the buzz of the film.

There is practically no dialogue for a while after the film starts. In that time you've already been introduced to Ranbir Kapoor's two avatars: Jordan - angry rockstar, living legend, quasi-Czech hero and Janardhan Jakhad: Hindu collegian (aka Hinduite), guitar strummer, the kind of guy who'd go stand in a kilometer long line to audition for Indian Idol.

Imtiaz Ali presents the two to us using grainy video visuals and a song, and in the process sets up for himself one hell of a challenge: in a little over two hours he's going to convince us that his hero's transition from Janardhan to Jordan is legit and he's going to do this with a love story integral to the film. This is what the film is about. Question is, does he succeed?

Up front in the first half, scenes serve more to set mood. The plot spills out in wordy exchanges, smartly covered up by structure as the story crosses back and forth across time in short tableaus with only Ranbir's look serving an anchor.

A couple of times, you're forced to see the same scene again because after a point this method gets unwieldy. There is humour: Janardhan's life is devoid of pain ("the only way an artist can make soulful music", suggests his canteenwala and future manager) and his screwball attempts to fall in love with the uppity Stephenian Heer and break his own heart are laugh-out-loud moments.

There is maturity: the girl he is falling in love with - unintentionally, slowly, obviously - goes on to get married with relatively no drama in a wedding JJ attends. There is craft: Imtiaz Ali wields the film's music (Rahman) impressively - juggling it expertly with silences, using it to fuse scenes and unveil emotions - in a way that is rarely seen in Bollywood.

Ali's use of cyclic events are well embedded high-note moments: JJ continually runs in with the cops starting at a bus stop in Delhi to trespassing in Prague; Heer and her Jordan always have a bike to run off on for their little escapades - in Kashmir and in well, Prague (the idea, probably sparked from Ali's own rendition of the spirit of Chor Bazaari from Love Aaj Kal); Jordan's rockstar-like attitude is earned, never induced, by his pining alone. The director takes special care (and an additional challenge) to not dilute the journey of the rockstar with substance abuse, be it hallucinogens, or even alcohol. In this rockstar's life there is very littlesex, no drugs, and the rock'n'roll is born out of heartbreak.

Unfortunately, the film suffers from the Bollywood curse of an interval (which comes at a rather meaningless point in this case) and starts to slip in the second half till it reaches a point where love transcends to cure no-hope physical ailments (remember the hand in Mausam?) Rockstar's roots are in poetry: Rumi, Heer Ranjha, The Doors' and it ends too, poetically. But in between it often changes heart and aspires to be drama, a refined but traditional Bollywood dictated by convention. If Ali had continued distilling the essence of what he is trying to say with representative scenes - exceptionally detailed, loosely connected - rather than forcing linearity and spelling out developments later on, Rockstar would remain the poem it was meant to be.

Technically, the film hits the sweet spot. Costume and art are particularly outstanding. The cinematography optimises the use of chosen locales, without being overwhelming. The songs are the highlight. If you were on the fence with the music before there was a narrative and visuals attached to them, be assured that you'll be re-listening to the OST with newfound understanding.

Nargis Fakhri has a raw deal - to be paired opposite an inspired Kapoor and named after a character whose reinterpretation would require significant experience - is no easy task. That she is beautiful is without contention (early on in their one-to-one moments, Ranbir has to resort to wild physical antics to get your eyes off her) but on the acting scale she is awkward, her words not always connecting to her body language and expressions.

Ali's instinct with casting - always spot on - may have let him down this time. With his role, Kapoor firmly establishes himself as one of Hindi cinema's finest. Ever.

In an enchanting scene Shammi Kapoor on a shehnai records a jugalbandi with Ranbir on his guitar. At one point the veteran wah-wah's him soundlessly, perhaps not only to add to the scene, but also to send a message to the world.

Ranbir above all else, is the reason the transition, Imtiaz Ali's vision - Janardhan to Jordan - is convincing. If you need one reason to watch Rockstar, RK it is.

With his role, Ranbir Kapoor firmly establishes himself as one of Hindi cinema's finest. Ever.
