Ra.One (3D)

[ 0 ]

Director: Anubhav Sinha
Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Shahana Goswami, Armaan Verma and Arjun Rampal
Quick Take: Paisa vasool, Ra.Won!

Holy hobnobbing circuitry that goes rickety tickety tingling! We can make films like Hollywood. At least the action part we can. Well step aside Shaktimaan and the likes, we've just hit par with Iron Man. That's the big take away from Shah Rukh Khan's much-anticipated, heavily publicised mega production. It's full on masala entertainment with a sci fi twist.

So Shah Rukh Khan plays the chettinad version of Tony Stark or should we say Kevin Flynn from Tron and his name is Shekhar. He's super smart, super geek and has a heart made from bullion. For his much ambitious office project he comes up with a game where there's a super villain called Ra.One. Shekhar makes the game, the villain and the hero G.One as a token for his son Pratik. But things go wrong as AI turns evil and the menacing Ra.One is released into the real world to wreak terror. And guess what? Super villain Ra.One isn't hatching plans of world domination or anything sinister, all he wants is to finish the virtual fight Shekhar's son Pratik walked out on. It means Ra.One wants to kill the little kid. But really? Shifting yourself from the virtual world into the real world all for one bout of fight with a kid? Well that's Ra.One's (the film) Achilles heel. The premise is slightly ludicrous. No marks for the writing department what with the clichd climax as well.

But for some reason that limp of a story doesn't hamper the entertainment value of Ra.One. Partly because you feel too awed by its Hollywood-esque visuals that are usually found in 200 million dollar budget movies. The 3D isn't half bad either. A certain X factor we've come to adore over the years also helps the film. SRK is the soul of this filmand he breathes vivacity and vim into every scene. This is also SRK's debut in Rajnikanth territory. Another thing that the film does so well is to parody itself. It never takes itself too seriously nor its characters and actors. Let's just say it's somewhat like Main Hoon Na and Om Shanti Om in the nature of its humour. Not so surprisingly Kareena Kapoor carries a large part of that brand of humour rather well.

End of the day the big question is - To watch or not to watch? Are you mad? To watch, obviously. Do not miss this if you've ever loved the idea of mainstream commercial cinema. It's heartening to see that we can recreate action and sci-fi like Hollywood does. It's not very polished but it's more than acceptable. In fact, had the storytelling been stronger Ra.One could've been a classic. Sadly it's not but it is an enjoyable sci-fi and CGI fiesta that will transport you to a world of kooky fantasy and video game heroes.

Ra.One : disappointingly good

DISAPPOINTINGLY GOOD. The title must have got you confused but that's the feeling with which i came out of theater . Disappointing because i expected a real superhero movie and good because considering the kind of movies indian cinema is making these days (normal human beings doing action stuff that may scare the hulk) Ra.One is better.

Now, having watched hollywood movies specially the superhero movies, i can say there are two approaches while making a superhero movie. Either you take the Spider-man (2002) road or you take the path of The Dark-Knight (2008). while Spider-man was all about a fast paced story with great special effects, Batman was a masterpiece which dealt with character (emotionally & psychologically) of a superhero.
Also there are a few key points that a superhero movie must have
  • good story line
  • secret of super power
  • a great villain
  • mind blowing vfx
lets see how Ra.one has performed on all the levels,

story : the weakest point for Ra.One were the loop holes in the story. The basic story has a lot of potential : a twisted father-son relationship, father builds a game to impress his son, the game's main program has artificial intelligence, it goes rouge chasing the son. But the way they dealt with details made the story lousy and unconvincing.
Powers : every superhero has some sort of logic behind possessing superpowers (atleast in hollywood) and his powers are well defined. Like superman can fly and has immense strength but he is not as fast as the flash, this was the problem with krrish (2006). In Ra.one there is no problem with powers possessed by G.One or Ra.One, but the question many people like me will ask is "how did a powerful game program materialized and entered physical world?". The movie lacks explanation.
Villain : there is no batman without joker, beacuse joker presents a twisted evil character which is balanced by the Batman. A villain should be mesmerizing, which srk and Rampal managed to achieve, given the conditions that it is a game program with one motive "to find and defeat Lucifer". But a villain has shades in his character, while Ra.One was plain kind of a one way train, there was never a point that it surprised (remember The joker got caught, but it turns out that he wanted to get caught).
VFX : one area where Ra.one will get 5/5. I remeber watching those military choppers in Lakshya and saying that "VFX n animations in bollywood sucks", while watching Ra.one today i was impressed with vfx.

COMPLAINTS: why do indian movies try so hard? why not keep it natural? this is a general complaint to bollywood (EXCEPT RAJNIKANT AND SALMAN KHAN, they can do anything). Why putting songs where there is no need? Mr. Srk its evident that u worked on this movie but this movie could have been a roller-coaster ride if you had worked on details and cut the bullshits like CHITTI, hanging g.one upside-down n make a fan.

In one line movie lacked details and could not grab viewer's attention. If they had hold the movie in one intense direction "Ra.One coming after the boy, and G.one protecting the boy n his mother" it could have been awesome.

Ratings : considering only Bollywood standards 3.5/5
considering Hollywood standard 1.5/5

If movies like Dabangg n Bodygaurd can be blockbusters then this movie deserves to be same.
i recommend this movie for kids, they will love it. And for the crowd which has only seen krrish & shaktiman in name of superheroes.

Film Review: Ra.One

Ra.One is a scandalous waste of cinematic resources.
OCTOBER 26, 2011 12:15 PM BY MIHIR FADNAVIS

Director: Anubhav Sinha
Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Arjun Rampal
Rating: ?????

One day, aliens will land on Earth to give us the answers to the secrets of the universe. But, because of films like Ra.One, they will deem us unworthy and return to their planet. And we will still live in a world where uninspired cinema burns wallets.

Ra.One is the marriage of Bollywood's least attractive couple—star power and unoriginality. This is a shameless rip-off of every single iconic science fiction film; all it's missing are the likable characters, good performances, and the action. A majority of the film centres around cheesy videogame-babble; a lame attempt at romance between leading stars Shah Rukh Khan and Kareena Kapoor; and a bizarre climax that reeks of desperation. After two hours and 40 minutes of this, even atheists would want to storm Buddhist monasteries in the hope of finding an oasis of serenity.

Despite its huge budget, Ra.One neither excites nor even entertains. It exists to move merchandise. Khan is no stranger to cornball excess, but Ra.One is his chef d'oeuvre. It is alarming to be underwhelmed by a movie where Shah Rukh Khan deploys two guises and elaborate futuristic sets to no particularly memorable effect. Rarely has so much money delivered so little entertainment.

So what's wrong? For one, the big CGI action sequences pack the entertainment value of ditch water. The noise is so headache-inducing that we welcome even the silly dialogue that forms most of the movie. The comedic attempts have the capacity to put viewers into a catatonic state; the jokes range from crass to shrill to vulgar. Khan tries to pull his car keys out of a woman's cleavage. A male security guard makes Khan take off his shirt, and licks his lips seductively at the sight of the hero's pierced nipples. Khan also fights with three scantily clad Chinese women named Iski Lee, Uski Lee and Sabki Lee. Even by the degraded standards of dim-witted blockbusters, this is sorry stuff.

The plot veers from boring to idiotic and slapdash. Khan plays Shekhar Subramaniam, a video game developer who invents a game with a villain so powerful that he comes to life and murders his creator. Enter the other Khan, G.One, who had been assigned by Subramaniam to protect his wife (Kapoor) and son, and kill the villainous Ra.One (Arjun Rampal). There is not an ounce of originality from this point on. Ra.One shifts shapes and regenerates like T-1000 fromTerminator 2; and he has an electromagnetic heart like Iron Man. G.One saves a train just the way Spider Man does; and he fights with Ra.One in Mortal Kombat-esque levels. It's not new. It's not interesting.

What really hurts is that none of the characters matter. They seem to have been bought out of a cinematic thrift store. Kapoor looks gorgeous, but her character is aggressively dumb and blissfully unaware of it. The talented Shahana Goswami, woefully miscast as Subramaniam's colleague, delivers her lines as if her mouth and her brain live in different states. While Khan as a South Indian makes you cringe, he is a lot more likable as the hero G.One. But he is still required to chew on the driest of dialogue, and to strike poses in a suit that makes him look callow rather than heroic. Rampal, on the other hand, looks more like a contestant at a costume party instead of a frightening villain.

So little of real consequence is at stake that you'll have plenty of time to notice not one but two dozen plot contrivances. In one scene, Subramaniam uses his fingers to eat spaghetti with curd, just to highlight our hero's South Indian heritage. Where are laugh tracks when you need them? Of course, one cannot expect much logic in a film where a video game comes to life, it's just that the thrills in Ra.One are almost apocalyptic in their stupidity. The big action scene on the Mumbai local train is a total and complete misfire of intention and execution; and there is little to recommend here beyond the Rajinikanth cameo, unless you like your Khan-endorsing, flag-waving fanboy jingoism taken to the extreme.

It's hard to completely hate this movie, hokey as it is, because you still want to root for the good guy in the end. But you can't help but wonder why Khan didn't save himself a lot of time and money and just make a video game instead of a movie. Ra.One is a scandalous waste of cinematic resources. It is a movie that seems proud to be imbecilic, loud and inconsequential.

Movie Review: Ra.One – One-Watch Film

Ra.One

For a film that attempts to take everything to the "next level," the worst thing I could probably say about Ra.One is that it was underwhelming. The VFX is fantastic – definitely the best we've seen in Hindi cinema so far. However, the story is so wafer-thin that it feels like a wasted attempt. Ultimately, we end up with a product that has a sparkly exterior, but a hollow interior.

Ra.One

The main problem with Ra.One lies in the fact that the makers couldn't decide whether they were making a superhero flick or a masala movie. The result of that was an under-developed film – the time they took to throw in cheap jokes and item numbers could have been better spent on developing the main saga; the Good vs. Evil story. If they did that, they would have had a true winner on their hands. Instead, what we end up with is a half-assed attempt that is ultimately disappointing, mostly because you realize how good it could've actually been.

Ra.One

The acting by both Shah Rukh Khan and Kareena Kapoor were strictly okay. Shah Rukh does a decent job, but it's by no means his best. Kareena doesn't even do much beyond her signature pout. Arjun Rampal showed a lot of promise, but was around for such a short time that ultimately it didn't make much of an impact either. The true star of the show was the kid, Armaan Verma. Very natural; I'd keep an eye out for him.

Ra.One

On to the good parts: The Rajnikanth scene was entertaining, if not a little pointless. I just wish we could have seen the two superstars play off each other more, because that would have made for an interesting set-up. But it was fun and will elicit a giggle. I also really liked some dialogues – by far my favourite was, "Tum Raavan ko har saal isiliye jalate ho, kyunki tumhe pata hain ki woh kabhi nahin marta." And the G.One-Ra.One scenes are great (but so few and far between!) and brimming with potential. So Ra.Onedefinitely did have its plus points and entertained in parts.

Ra.One

As a side note, I saw the film in 3D and didn't think it added much value to the overall experience (I think 3D in general is overrated though; this is not a fault with Ra.One). If you're going with kids, you could probably do the 3D for the extra thrill value it offers, but otherwise don't feel like you absolutely need to see it in 3D!

In short: Watch for the VFX; definitely worth it. But don't go in thinking it'll live up to its hype.

Indicine Movie Review

Special Appearances: Sanjay Dutt, Priyanka Chopra, Rajnikanth
Director: Anubhav Sinha

Ra One Review

Ra One has been a huge part of our lives over the last few months, the build-up to Shahrukh Khan's most ambitious movie ever has been huge. All of it finally comes to an end today with it's theatrical release.

With the way it was marketed, the expectations from Ra One was unbelievably high. Quite frankly, that's not always such a good thing. With sky-high expectations, the risk of disappointing the audience is quite high too.

Unfortunately, Ra One disappoints. We genuinely wanted to like the film, but apart from the 30 odd minutes in the second half, there is nothing that touches you and absolutely nothing that creates the kind of adrenaline-rush that good superhero films should.

What works for Ra One

The best thing about Ra One is Kareena Kapoor. The actress looks stunning, oozing sensuality in two fantastic songs – Criminal and Chammak Challo. When it comes to on-screen histrionics, not many actresses in the industry come close to Kareena and she proves that yet again in Ra One. It has to be one of her most likable performances since Jab We Met.

Tremendous amount of work has gone into making Ra One the most technologically advanced film in India and it's evident in every scene. Both the visual and sound effects are outstanding. Not close to Hollywood standards, but for the budget that the film has been made on, it's brilliant!

Why Ra One disappoints

In short, Ra One lacks soul. There are three important tracks in the movie; One, the love story between Kareena and G.One. Two, the relationship between Shekhar (later G.One) and his son. And finally, the good vs bad rivalry between G.One and R.One. None of them work, you simply do not feel for any of the characters. (*Spoiler alert – Do not read if you haven't watched the film* There were people in the theater laughing when Shekhar Subramanium dies, which is just one example of the movie not connecting with the audience)

The first half is mediocre, the second half starts off well but scenes leading to the climax are bad. Ra One also reminds you of the Hollywood classic, Terminator 2.

The special appearances by Sanjay Dutt, Priyanka Chopra and Rajnikanth add to the star value, but both sequences fail to make any impact.

Performances

Shahrukh Khan is good as G.One, but as Shekhar Subramanium he tends to overact. Kareena was brilliant. Arjun Rampal was good, but has a shorter than expected role. Armaan Verma who plays SRK's son, does a decent job. All the other actors including Shahana Goswami, Satish Shah and Dalip Tahil are wasted.

To sum things up

Considering the years of hard work and money that has gone into the making, it hurts to say this – Ra One had immense potential to be a very good film, but it isn't. Not even close. The biggest flaw is the script and the direction.

Rating: ★★☆☆☆

Wednesday update - I: 'Ra.One' has mind-boggling start, business at an all-time high

-By Taran Adarsh, October 26, 2011 - 12:52 IST

RA.ONE has started with a bang. The morning shows, which commenced as early as 7 and 8 a.m. at various places, started on a deafening 95% to 100% note, while 9 a.m. onwards, the occupancy was 100% across the board. Even at certain mass-dominated centres, where the business is not at peak so early in the morning, reported full houses.

The single screens as well as multiplexes have started on an earth-shattering note, although a section of the industry was feeling that the start wouldn't be massive in view of the fact that Diwali is being celebrated today. Generally, film business remains low-key due to the festivities and pooja ceremony being organized at homes and offices on Diwali.

What's noteworthy is the fact that RA.ONE has been released extensively across India. Not just the number of screens, even the number of shows at plexes has been at an all-time high, with as many as 28 to 30 shows a day being performed at a number of cineplexes. That too, at inflated ticket rates.

Bollywood Hungama will keep you updated with the response to the film at regular intervals. Watch this space!

RA.One review

G.One clinging by a Mumbai local

Cast: Shahrukh Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Arjun Rampal, Armaan Verma, Shahana Goswami, Tom Wu

Directed by Anubhav Sinha

Rating: Not even One 😲

Science fiction is an oxymoron. And when this genre is sprinkled with moronic humour and logic takes a beating from hell, you know you've punched your tickets for 'RA.One'. With metallic blue and red costumes right out of Falguni Pathak's wardrobe, this out-of-console experience offers laughs, dances and androids touching humans in more ways than considered socially acceptable. Insert coin to read more.

The film sweeps us into a video game fantasy where anything is possible (with a 175-crore-budget, it better be). Game developer, Shekhar Subramanium (Shahrukh Khan) wants to earn his son, Prateek's (Armaan Verma) love and respect. And the only thing that gives Prateek joy is to see his joystick twiddling to spell doom for the most vicious video game super-villain ever. So daddy makes a baddie just like that and calls it RA.One (Arjun Rampal). The game also has a not-so-indestructible superhero called G.One (an emotionally challenged Shahrukh). Please read the box carefully for the 25 permutation-combinations in which RA.One and G.One can kill each other (something to do with the heart being in the body and not in the pocket or anywhere else during combat).

Anyway, it gets nasty as our virtual warriors tear out of the game, 'Terminator 2'-style. Also, thanks to some goofy programming, RA.One is hell-bent on killing Prateek. Naturally, G.One has to do the rescuing and being an android, do it without getting teary-eyed or romantic with Prateek's mum, Sonia (Kareena Kapoor). But who said robots can't ham or chant prophetic life-changing verses coded by its master? No.One!

Humour based on linguistic stereotypes may have worked in 'Zabaan Sambhalke' but now it hardly earns a chuckle. This is assuming the average audience intellect dictates that Tamilians don't always say 'Aiyoo' or pronounce 'keys' as 'kiss'. And even if they do, no amount of laughter track can make this seem funny. No.Fun!

'RA.One' does what no other Sci-Fi movie has done before: it mocks itself. So, the superhero who is manually stopping trains in one scene, is also burning his crotch or sneezing out metallic wires in another. No respect.

Shahrukh's robotic expressions will remind you of his 'My Name is Khan' role, as he confuses machines with differently-abled humans. Kareena's character covers the entire gamut of expressions but isn't memorable or mentionable enough to be regarded. Arjun Rampal has bagged his dream role: an android with mechanical expressions who allows his body to do the talking. Good job, Arjun Rampal's body!

The VFX award would go for most battle arenas, inspired from many popular games. It wouldn't go for the local train swishing out of CST station like a PowerPoint slide.

It's convenient to say that if you have no expectations from 'RA.One', you wouldn't be disappointed. But if you feel so little for the film, why go to watch it at all?

Ra.One – Review
Post a Comment October 26, 2011 – 3:14 pm By Kanchana Devi | Permalink | Print This Article |

Mumbai, Oct 26 (TruthDive): Shahrukh Khan's highly anticipated movie Ra.One, is finally released to huge openings on Diwali. Huge hype, expectations surrounded the movie and yes, it lives up to it. It is a true Diwali treat.

CAST AND CREW

Banner : Red Chillies Entertainment
Cast : Shahrukh Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Armaan Verma, Arjun Rampal, Shahana Goswami
Director : Anubhav Sinha
Producer : Gauri Khan

STORY

Shekhar Subramaniam (Shah Rukh Khan) is a graphics specialist working for Barron Industries that makes video games and a man who loves his wife Sonia (Kareena Kapoor) and son Prateek (Armaan Verma). Prateek often questions his dad's sensibilities and says that he admires villains as he finds heroic games are no good. For that matter, to make his son happy, Shekhar comes up with a new game Ra.One that shows the villain stronger than the hero.

Shekhar installs Artificial Intelligence in the villain so that it makes him think on his own. He develops the invincible Random Access One (Ra.One), who can take any form, to please his son. Still not fully convinced with his own creation, as a standby he also develops Good One (G- One), who could exterminate Ra.One if need be.

Excited with his father's creation, Prateek plays Ra.One with a screen name, Lucifer. He manages to cross level two of the video game, thereby antagonising "Ra.One". Unknown to Shekhar and his team, Ra.One steps out of the game into the real world to eliminate Lucifer, thereby threatening Prateek's life.

As Ra.One comes out of the game and creates ruinous damage, Shekhar brings on G.One in the physical world to destroy Ra.One.

PERFORMANCE

Shah Rukh Khan is one of India's greatest stars. The King is back again and reinvents himself yet again and it is clearly evident that his dream has now become a reality for him. He is fantastic as both Shekhar who lacks the mettle with some stupidity, god-fearing south Indian and even G.One.

Kareena Kapoor looks stunning and makes you fall in love with her all over again. Arjun Rampal is outstanding. Debutant Armaan as Prateek is impressive. He actually steals the show and the movie belongs to him.

Music by Vishal Shekhar is splendid. But songs appear out of nowhere and for no reason as such. The high point is surely the AKON number-'Chammak Challo'.

Shahana Goswami as the employee at the electronic company looks fine for the role she plays but has very little to deliver.

The little gimmicks by Sanjay Dutt, Priyanka Chopra and Rajnikanth add to the lighter moments of the film but take the story nowhere.

This high energetic film is loaded with antics, animation and action. With many thrilling sequences mounted with grandeur, it gives you the feel of a live video game. It is probably one of the classiest movies ever seen in the Hindi film industry and a feather in Anubhav's hat, the director.

COMMENT

Watch it for the special effects and for 'Chammak Challo'. In all, a fun movie to catch and will definitely run full house during the Diwali weekend – making it a very happy Diwali for King Khan.

Keep------------Smiling !!! 😊
