You've received a Lifetime Achievement Award.
I feel elated that people still remember me, even though I stopped acting almost 38 years ago. I am overwhelmed by the response at the Pune International Film festival.

This award has added to my joy, more so because it is for the third time that I am bagging this along with Yashji who is one of my favorite directors.

What's different between filmmaking then and now?
The main difference between then and now is that a bound script was always given to all the artistes before the shooting of a film began and there was no provision at all for on-the-spot writing like they do today. As an actress, I used to take a lot of effort in getting the right costumes and the looks.

Why did you top acting since '68?
I did receive a lot of tempting offers but I turned them down because I just do roles of the bhabhi or the mother in law or for that matter the ubiquitous mother. I feel that it's just not at all my cup of tea. Though I am not ready to face the arc lights now as an actress in films, my son Suchindran is raring to act and in fact he is working in a Tamil film as of now.

You are working on an autobiography?
Yes. I have decided to come up with my own autobiography, shortly. I want to share the lovely and sweet moments that I spent in the industry with all my fans and I thought if I pen my thoughts down, it would be a wonderful idea.

How do you rate the new Devdas?
You wouldn't believe it, but I still haven't watched Bhansali's Devdas in which Madhuri Dixit had essayed the role, which I had played in the Bimal Roy version of Devdas. I have only watched the promos.

Are you with the latest films?
In recent times, I managed to watch films like Lagaan, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge etc. I make it a point to see most of the films, which have been directed by Yashji.

Plans to start a dance school once again?
I do not want to start any dance school. As of now to impart training to budding dance talent is that my travels, performance on the stage in my dance dramas, research work on dancing, etc keep me very busy on my toes and I just cannot sit at one place and get tied down.

How was the experience of working with Dilip Kumar?
It was wonderful acting with Dilip Kumar. I had acted in almost six or seven films with him. We vibed well and almost all our films together clicked at the box office. We shared a very cordial relationship and used to vie to perform better. I think he was jealous of me whenever people appreciated my performance after comparing his performance with mine.
