Of the three Khan brothers Sohail is definitely the most accomplished. He has handled production, direction and acting with ease. He's back on screen with Vikram Chopra's Fight Club (co-produced by him) and Abhishek Kapoor's Aryan. |
Sohail Khan, the producer, Sohail Khan, the director and Sohail Khan the actor - which of these roles is most difficult? It has to be direction since it requires a lot of creative involvement. It is a job with plenty of responsibility. If it is just production, the job gets easier since we have a production house so the job gets delegated. Let's talk about Fight Club. How would you categorise the film? I would say it is an action comedy. The action that you have is very one-on-one. There is no blood spill involved. The promos may indicate that the film is for the youth, but once you see the film, you will realise it is for the whole family with comedy, romance and music. What is your role in the film? I play a bouncer who has a history with Zayed Khan. And when the latter decides to set up Fight Club, he seeks his help. Lately, action films have not found a footing in the industry. Why is that? Action has to be realistic. It has to connect with the audience. You have to justify the sequences in a film. Action has to mix with emotion. The action scenes have to there for a reason. You cannot be a rebel without a cause. Tell us about Aryan, where you play a boxer. The film is more about the emotions of a man who had to give up boxing at an early age to take responsibility for his family. But he is frustrated because he can't live without boxing. To promote the film, the producers will be holding some exhibition boxing matches in association with the Indian Boxing Association. (Some Australian boxing trainers were flown to train Sohail and Inder Kumar for the film). Your comedy skills in Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya have come in for praise. Your take on it... Comedy is all about situation. It is about action and reaction. The other person has to react, otherwise it doesn't work. It's the combination that works. What is next coming up? There's Raakh, Team and Salaam-e-Ishq. I hope to start my directorial venture, inshallah, by October. And tell us something about the Amar Akbar Anthony remake with brothers Salman and Arbaaz? We are waiting for the script to reach our hands. It's a landmark film and we have to ensure that we don't make a mess of the storyline. In fact, I am a bit scared about it. |
