Just came back from Aarakshan, and posted a similar version of this review in the movies thread xD

I think all the governments that had banned this movie would feel hella stupid had they actually watched the movie-- that's because, "aarakshan" is barely even handled in the first half of the movie, only. The second half, to me, purely focussed on the importance of education, and also character maintenance.

Aarakshan is definitely a good movie- good message, honest, but I think its lack of focus is what throws a tiny wrench at the movie in total. There are times where you can really relate to a certain character's opinion, but then they change their opinion in like, 2 scenes, and you're left with "wha."

ahaha don't get me wrong, I think this movie has more good than bad. CAST is Faaantastic. REALLY good acting from everyone. I'm not a huge fan, but Amitabh Bachchan kinda blows minds in this movie, he's SO powerful! His body language, facial expressions, his general screen presence totally captures you, and its pretty hard to escape it ahaha.

Tanvi is quite adorable, and though she doesn't have that many dialogues, the ones she did have stay with you. Deepika was good for the small role she had, and I'm glad Prakash Jha took the decision of graduating from Katrina to Deepika. Though both of their role sizes were more or less the same, Deepika gave more to her role. She had more expressions on her face, and I guess that's how you milk a small role.

Saif and Prateik had small roles, no denying it. I mean, small only in terms of screen time. I like how they both represented the 2 different sides of the issue of "aarakshan", but I think they could've milked this MUCCCH more. Granted, they both have really great dialogs during the heated cantene scene.

There were complaints that they had "guest appearances", but I think their role sizes were fine. As it is, the focus was on Amitabh and Manoj Bajpai

It was VERY smart of Prakash Jha to rope in A-listers like Saif and Deepika. It does 2 things- obviously brings in more audience what with fan bases, and it lets the director avoid making the movie tax-free... which is kinda immorally questionable, but obviously good news for the producer ahaha.

The songs are helllaaa uncalled for 😆 Esp. "Accha Lagta Hain". It's TOO obvious that they did this for the sake of putting songs into movies 😆 CUTE song nonetheless. It's fun to watch the coy romance, and the song "Chanus" is even more fun to listen to.
btw, Prateik-- I just wanna kidnap him and feed him candy. He is TOO CUTE. which kinda got in the way of his role, IMO. He did fine, but he didn't seem too significant.. I dunno, there's something about his dialogs or something that made it hard to take him seriously.
But he's HELLA cute <3
I'm really glad A-listers were in this movie though. Esp. Saif, because I think he prob. had an idea that his role wasn't the main focus.. I'm glad he did a role in a meaningful movie.

Manoj Bajpai is slappable, which means he did a goood job ahaha, considering he's a bit of a villain. They exaggerated his role towards the end though. He looks SO sinister, it's so hard to believe he's acting ahaha. But, I feel like in some of the scenes, he looked a little cartoonish.. he gave very typical villainy expressions and it kinda got funny towards the end... essspecialllyy when he bangs his head against a bulldozer -__-

so at the end of my word-barf 😆 I think Aarakshan should be watched, DEFINITELY. It's a nice movie that makes you think about education, makes you value the education you've received, and revives in your the nice feeling of people power.

But I personally don't feel that "aarakshan" itself is the main issue this movie manages to bring out at the end of the movie.

Chhattisgarh ST Commission seeks tax waiver for ''Aarakshan''

PTI | 07:08 PM,Aug 19,2011

Raipur, Aug 19 (PTI) The controversial film 'Aarakshan' has received a compliment from

unlikely quarters in Chhattisgarh with the state Scheduled Tribes Commission seeking a

tax-free status for the Amitabh Bachchan starrer, official sources said today. State

Scheduled Castes Commission president Devlal Dugga has submitted a

memorandum in this regard to Chief Minister Raman Singh, they said. Singh has

directed the concerned department to look into the demand, they added. According to

Dugga, the film should be screened at schools and colleges so that they understand

the importance of education for all classes of society and the need for reservations.

The Prakash Jha directed film, which is based on the caste-based reservations in

education institutions, ran into rough weather with its screening being banned in Punjab,

Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh. However, the Supreme Court today quashed the ban

imposed on the film by the Uttar Pradesh government, while Punjab and Andhra Pradesh

told the court that they have already decided to permit its screening.

'Aarakshan' mints Rs.58 crore in first week, Jha elated

Filmmaker Prakash Jha is happy that even after the "unexpected tough battle" to release his film "Aarakshan", the movie has managed to amass Rs.58.5 crore within its first week.

"I'm very happy with the audience response to 'Aarakshan'. I've been flooded with congratulatory messages and calls. The film seems to be touching many, many people," Jha said in a statement Friday.

"Aarakshan", which deals with the sensitive issue of caste-based quota system in India's educational system, was banned in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh for the fear of anti-Dalit comments in it.

However, the ban was lifted from Punjab and Andhra Pradesh a day after its worldwide release, Aug 12. In Uttar Pradesh, the ban was lifted Aug 19.

"It has been an unexpectedly tough battle to release the film... I hope no other filmmaker ever has to go through what I'm going through. I'm very grateful for the support of the audiences worldwide who have been watching and enjoying the film. Many common people have been conveying their support, and that is very heartening," added Jha.

The movie features megastar Amitabh Bachchan with Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone, Manoj Bajpayee and Prateik.
