and i know what you said, but you also mentioned you were comparing popularity... in any case... i do think you are giving kareena far too much credit for a character she played... there are several other factors that go into play, that account for the popularity of a character... the story of the movie, and direction to begin with...!
and i was under the implications that you suggested that it "COULD" have been considered for the national award... perhaps, i was mistaken in making that interpretation...
in any case, just playing a 'manic pixie girl' does not automatically become the criteria for awards... the character could be any, as long as it is played well and displays the nuances of a fine actor... so really, playing a bubbly character (which is pretty much any other character) should technically also be considered in the same league, because as you say 'to make an ordinary, almost boring stereotypical character so popular' should also 'speak volumes for their talent'... 😉😛
and i don't think anyone is discrediting kareena in any sense... but merely pointing out that JWM wasn't the breakthrough performance as some are making it out to be...!
p.s. thank you for refreshing my memory and providing the definition by the way... though, i still don't see how exactly that relates to the topic at hand...! 😛😛

What i was referring to was the fact that MPDG is a stock character...I never said it deserves the national award...heck i myself said tht Priyamani won the NA for a tamil film called Paruthi veeran that year...which was way more deserving than kareena winning it...so im not arguing tht she has to win the award for tht...

I was just merely stating my argument against that of some ppl who like you, feel that kareena gets "way too much credit" for JWM...I feel its well deserved because not many actors can boast of performances which redefine a stock character...like i mentioned in my previous post..

the reason i say that kareena gets way too much credit for JWM, is mostly because the same people who go ga-ga over her performance in JWM, are usually the same ones who would not give credit to kajol, rani, or preity for similar everyday characters... i was merely pointing out the discrepancy... claiming that kareena in JWM at Geet was a memorable character, and implying (perahps, that was not the purpose, but it seemed so...) that others were not, and hence, rightly can be termed overrated, or mediocre, suggest to me a disparity in views, only because of the kind of character they are playing...
if you feel so, that's fine... however, credit must be given (to everyone), where it is due... 😉
kareena not winning a national award, certainly does not imply that she is a bad actress... however, she does need to put in the extra effort, which i don't think she plans to considering her upcoming roles, to be considered for NA... she'll always be remembered for her role in JWM, because in her career so far, that is pretty much the only role that has stood out for her... for an actress of her caliber, i do think that is selling oneself short... it's not that she is not capable, but being capable is one thing, and choosing the right role is another...!

I agree with Nuktacheen. There have been various similar roles in the past that have been played by other actresses equally well, if not better. Kajol's character in KKHH had become an iconic character during that time, it sort started a trend of being a 'tomboy'. Girls started sporting short hair and played basketball because of that character 😆

So as far as 'popularity' and 'influence' goes, I think Kajol's characters in both KKHH and K3G trump Geet any day.

Madhuri's character in HAHK gained equal popularity and is still remembered for some of the dialogues. In fact the sole reason that film is still hailed as one of the best films of all time is because of Madhur's immensely enjoyable character, her songs, her dresses etc.

Preity in KHNH was brilliant, IMO. Rani in Hum Tum was amazing as well. So yes, there have definitely been other performances of equal prowess. JWM just happened to come along in a time when heavy marketing and promotion made sure of the film's and it's characters' popularity long before the film's release.

Personally, I feel Kareena has a tendency to overact and that's what she did in JWM too, which can be proven by the fact the she simply sleepwalked through the second half.

So if Rani's role in Hum tum and Preity in Kal ho na just as popular as Kareena in Geet. How many memorable lines do these characters have compared to Geet. When was the last time you heard someone going ga ga over Preity in KHNH or Rani in HT. Last time I checked, someone was saying Rani doesn't even deserve her award for Hum Tum. And Both rani and preity roles weren't even anything like Geet esp Preity's role who was a depressed character from the beg of the film. Sorry but I disagree, the popularity and craze that Kareena brought in JWM, none can match that esp Rani and Preity. But I agree about Kajol in DDLJ and KKHH. She was def as popular as Geet. Well what can I say, it makes sense...Kareena and Kajol are the only actresses who can pull of bubbly over the top characters without making it look artificial. They make it their own and make it seem natural...that's why their characters are the most memorable.

Saying that only kareena fans recall the Geet role is streaching it a bit far. I have heard non kareena fans say, I don't like kareena, but I liked her in JWM. And they know all the lines she used in the film.

And also give me a link where u see when the most popular roles or performance list comes out, where kareena's role in Geet was left out and Rani from Hum tum or PZ from Kal ho na is on it. Rani is usually there for Black. And PZ is rarely there!

Kareena and Shahid fans are kumbh ke bichde hue saathiya (...took that from your other topic! 😆 Lol). After JWM, Kareena has had no critically acclaimed work...(critically kya, nothing even past mediocre..yea even Kurbaan was mediocre) and Shahid fans always keep bringing up Guddu/Charlie from Kaminey to prove his career isn't deteriorating at the speed of light. The future is bleak for Kareena Kapoor with films like Ra.1 (I can't get past that title), Hairdresser film (her only hope...which is pretty sad), Bodyguard, Agent Vinod (her second to last only hope). With all of those films she has, she won't even get those rigged Filmfare, Star Plus, and Zee awards. I don't even want to be her fan in disguise anymore.

Yeah and her non fans keep bringing up that she has no good roles coming up. That's not what the topic is about, the topic says why kareena hasn't won a NA yet when Saif and Priyanka who are no less actors than her have won! Instead of discussing JWM and Chameli, the two movies where she had a huge chance of winning...ppl bring up her fans and shahid fans and her movies in the future. People on this forum! 😆 Is it that hard to give credit where it's due! I guess so!

And funny how her interesting role in Amir's film is left out! 😆

Oh my God Zainab! 😆😆
I still don't think JWM is a NA worthy role.

I feel that Kareena will eventually win the National Award...

but I disagree that her role in Jab We Met should win it for her.
Maybe she'll excel more in a future role. I'm POSITIVE she'll win one, considering the fact that she is indeed a good actress...

but honestly, if it's being questioned why Kareena hasn't won because SAIF won it for Hum Tum, then any respectable actor who's done a good role can be replaced. Ranbir Kapoor, Madhuri.. god forbid but even Salman Khan...

I don't get this comparison. Everyone KNOWS that Saif's mom was in the jury, and his win was not necesarily a very noteworthy one.

SO why use Saif's performance's standard, and say that Kareena deserves an NA for Jab We Met, on THAT basis?
