that i did not know... things you learn on IF... 😆😆😆
on topic...
frankly, the reason kareena has not won any award is because her performances obviously fell short somewhere... whoever else was nominated along with her, was obviously better, hence got the award... what else can it be... and national awards are pretty consistent, barring a few here and there...!
priyanka obviously has had better roles, there is no shadow of doubt there... kareena can hardly anticipate getting an award for G3 or 3 idiots... that is just not happening... that goes for her upcoming movies as well... it's not that she is not a good actress or anything, but her roles don't exactly demand much acting prowess from her... TongueTongueTongue
imo, that's her own fault, and nobody else's...!

still i will say its wrong to compare two actresses on different films...comparison is done when something is common not bizzarre...BTW i dont understand why this topic actually mean...kareena left out in cold...she is winning those filmfare awards...which are considered oscar in India...isn't tht enuff...anyways...abt KONKANA SEN SHARMA...she is far better actress than kareena or even priyanka so comparing her to both of them is totally laughable...konkana deserve many awards as she comes in the likes of nasirrrudin shah, om puri, etc

red totally agree👏👏👏

PC did it in anjaaa anjaani
Rani did it in dil bole hadippa
Priety did it in several movies of hers
Aishwarya did it in Robot and Action replay(sort of)
Konkona sort of played it in Laaga chunri mein daag
Genelia did it in Jaane tu ya jaane na
Kangana did it in Tanu weds manu

But did any of them from the above list match the amount of critical acclaim, awards and fan following kareena got from playing that one character "geet"?

I truly believe geet is an iconic character because there have always been such madcap crazy roles...but did anyone ever excel in that role and establish the same kinda connect kareena did with geet?

Juhi did numerous bubbly roles and so did preity...but are any of them particularly as memorable? Is there that one character which remains in ur mind years after u saw the film?

Its very easy to play "different" roles...u have a set graph and a set of nuances for that particular role which u cannot go beyond...but whats more difficult is playing a cliched, done to death character with spunk and spontaneity...which is what i think kareena did perfectly in JWM...and which is exactly why i rank this performance of hers above all others like Omkara, dev, chameli and refugee...

Acting is not always about playing "difficult" or "different" roles...its also about playing an ordinary role differently...

👏 That's all I was trying to say too. But people keep asking me why do I keep repeating JWM. Because there is something special with kareenas performance in JWM. She played it with such natural and original take. Like u said a lot of actress have failed at it..including PRiyanka in AA and Kangana in TWM. Both of these ladies are considered great actress, but failed at what kareena did in JWM. So yes JWM is a challenging role..if not for kareena..than for PC and Kangana and many other actresses. That's why Kareena's bubbly role in JWM is the most popular in bollywood cinema.

People say Kareena's JWM is not a NA worthy performance, well PC in fashion and Saif in Hum tum was not NA worthy performances either. But they have won it!

Oh and by the way...there was an article written about most memorable performance..Saif from Omkara was in there. And from all the actresses, only Kareena's performance in JWM and one other actress was on the list. The whole list was taken over by the actors and it had only two actresses and one of them being bebo from JWM. The writer explained the reason kareena's JWM made the list and not Basanti from Sholay was because he felt kareena was better. Will post the link of that article if I find it!

Bloody hell...TRUE! If there was no madness and mayhem then there would be no tussles and dishum dishums. That would mean that IF would be a very quiet and peaceful place to be. Now who the hell would want that??😆

@ smartie... hmmm, if you are going to compare kareena's JWM, then you need to draw valid comparisons... like kajol in kuch kuch hota hai, or kajol in DDLJ... which are equally popular... the movies you have quoted are (A) mostly flops, and (B) not even popular... 😛😛
preity's role in kal ho naa ho, gained a lot of popularity too... at least draw valid parallels when you are comparing... otherwise, the comparison sort of falls flat, don't you think...
and only kareena fans or the ones who are really in-tune with bollywood would recognize Geet from Jab We Met... most people would remember the name of the actress and the movie, not what they were called in a movie...
and second of all, the praise kareena got for jab we met, many others have gotten for their specific movies in the past... rani in hum tum as well (just remembered that movie now...)... and they are memorable...
also, you need to consider the era as well... half of the people probably do not know the popular movies of madhuri or sridevi, so does that mean none of their roles were memorable...? 😕 sorry, but that is not a good enough argument...!
kareena is a good actress, but let's face it... the number of nuanced performances, that could have won her a national award are not that many...

sorry nukta...but please read my post carefully...i said "maniac pixie dream girl"...u can google tht term up and tht gives u the following description

Manic Pixie Dream Girl (MPDG) is a stock character in films. Film critic Nathan Rabin, who coined the term after seeing Kirsten Dunst in Elizabethtown, describes the MPDG as "that bubbly, shallow cinematic creature that exists solely in the fevered imaginations of sensitive writer-directors to teach broodingly soulful young men to embrace life and its infinite mysteries and adventures."

Which perfectly fits with the characters I have mentioned before...kajol in DDLJ and KKHH is bubbly and tomboyish...but shes not a maniac pixie dream girl...and neither is priety from kal ho na ho...or rani in Hum tum...try fitting these characters in the above description and u'll see where im getting at...Kajol in K3G, priety in Dil se or srk and saif's characters (rather than prietys or ranis) from KHNH and HT respectively, fit the description better..

I was referring to girls playing "maniac pixie dream girl" only...and not a just "bubbly" character...Therz a difference...and hence, i think the roles i mentioned above are a fair comparison. In all the films i mentioned above, the heroines play these " loud sunshine girls" who teach the brooding, timid and depressed heroes how to live their lives...its a specific section of stock characters i was referring to (like the prostitute with a heart of gold, the hero's funny sidekick, the angry young man hero etc)...not just playing the typical chopra, johar heroine...

EDIT: and i did take era into consideration when i stated that which other "contemporary working actress today" has recieved as much acclaim for playing a maniac pixie dream girl...
Sridevi, Madhuri, kajol, karishma in Chaalbaaz, HAHK, Saajan, Lamhe, K3G, biwi no 1 etc all played memorable characters...I never denied that...

I argued against juhi because as such, she has played several maniac pixie dream girl characters...but it never was career defining..like it was with kareena, sridevi or madhuri...I appreciated kareena in JWM solely for the fact that she redefined a stereotypical stock character

like srk defined the typical lover boy in DDLJ, DTPH
or amitabh defined the angry young man in films like deewar, agneepath etc
or ajay defined the silent, brooding guy in Gangajal, bhagat singh
or salman defined the loud action hero in Wanted and Dabangg

I feel Geet, after Basanti, defines the loud mouthed Maniac pixie dream girl...which is wht kareena deserves credit for...

^^ i merely followed your discussion and made my points...
and i know what you said, but you also mentioned you were comparing popularity... in any case... i do think you are giving kareena far too much credit for a character she played... there are several other factors that go into play, that account for the popularity of a character... the story of the movie, and direction to begin with...!
and i was under the implications that you suggested that it "COULD" have been considered for the national award... perhaps, i was mistaken in making that interpretation...
in any case, just playing a 'manic pixie girl' does not automatically become the criteria for awards... the character could be any, as long as it is played well and displays the nuances of a fine actor... so really, playing a bubbly character (which is pretty much any other character) should technically also be considered in the same league, because as you say 'to make an ordinary, almost boring stereotypical character so popular' should also 'speak volumes for their talent'... 😉😛
and i don't think anyone is discrediting kareena in any sense... but merely pointing out that JWM wasn't the breakthrough performance as some are making it out to be...!
p.s. thank you for refreshing my memory and providing the definition by the way... though, i still don't see how exactly that relates to the topic at hand...! TongueTongue
