Saif and Ajay are the most versatile.

And actress Kareena wins hands down. She is number one in terms of versatility and the best actress we have in bollywood currently. Omakara (drama), JWM (comedy) Chameli, Golmaal 3...

After Kareena, I would say it's PC.

Special mention to Rani too. But don't know if she is considered popular right now!

If attempt is the only thing that counts then even Katrina excels at that. She has done the no makeup tragedy queen - raajniti, the serious maternal figure: NY, the comic princess: ajab prem ki gajab kahani, the romantically deluded NRI: Namaste london, the bimbette: tees maar khan

etc...

If I am gonna be accused of playing the technicality card here then so will everybody. 😆

If attempt is perceived as versatility, then Katrina should be given the same respect and not be ridiculed for her lack of acting time and again. But she's not, now is she? Therefore, attempt alone shouldn't be the criteria for measuring versatility. You also have to succeed to a certain extent in both the critics and audience's minds.

I think Katrina is versatile in choosing different scripts --- minus most of Akki's movies.

NY - Rajneeti - NL were interesting movies. Now she's done a part in Zoya Akthar's movie. So yes she tries out different genres. She is successful for the masses and an epic fail for critics or amateurs of subtle acting.

Okay - I think Saif's versatile but I do think he failed his happy go lucky playa desi boy character in Hum Tum & Tara Rum Pum. He was awarded for HT. Now does it make it better in my eyes? Nopi nope. 😳🥱

I do agree the "attempt" isn't enough, but should be recognized at its own value.
