I am not into watching your average song and dance Bollywood movies so I could care less. Mainstream hollywood does not interest me either, I usually gag if someone asks me to go watch something like No strings attached with them. Most people think hollywood is the epitome of moviemaking, well to those...have you tried watching foreign movies or even your regional Indian movies? How many people complaining about crappy Indian cinema have sat through the Apu trilogy, or a Mandi? Japanese, Spanish, German, Mexican, Turkish cinema? You pick and you choose, why limit your self to just regular bollywood. I watch movies that interest me. Somtimes they are nonsensical comedies like the hangover series or Bhool bhulaiya, sometimes serious like Head on or City of God.

i agree!!!! A lot of Spanish movies are amazing as well as French film...but we only ever just compare BW with HW...it's sad, but there are regional films that are good too!!! I know a lot of BW writers/directors remake films from the South all the time!!!

I completley agree with Dexterphile. Also, on a ratio of good to bad films, hollywood has far more stupid mindless movies compared to good ones that do live up to the hype as well. It's very rare in any film industry to have all movies live up to the hype, each industry also goes through a golden age and then a rough patch. This is our industry's rough patch.

I too do a fair share of exploring in films of different languages, and the results are usually that there are far more bad attempts at a film than a good one. This is a time when anyone can pick up a camera and make a film if they have enough financial backing, also that films cater to the masses now, so these days you have a lot of writers and directors with a mediocre storyline, and a lot of money and a lot of big name actors coming togther to make a sub-par film. This happens in both hollywood and bollywood.
its harder to get financial support in our industry with a film that aims to be on the alternative side, but there are many directors still trying their hand at it and suceeding. I have faith in bollywood, there was a time when it was a fantastic industry that churned out films that were both hits and also unique with phenomenal acting and music. I'm sure we can do it again.

I agree. While reading many of the responses I was getting annoyed as everyone was comparing BW to HW. It was like, HW is the best film industry when it comes to movies. I chose not to say anything but glad you did. I know tons of Indian movies that are better than HW anyday.

But then you can make the same case for HW too...there are loads HW films too that are better than some of the BW/Indian films...it all really just depends on the film itself and not really the film industry where it's coming from!

That's true. But why only compare it to HW films? HW is not that great anyways, there are sequels happening in HW more than ever this year (just like BW) and the movies they make now are usually similar to another one of their past movies (No Strings Attached and Friends with Benefits released just a few months within each other, Planet of the Apes, etc).

The way the comparisons were going, it seemed to me like HW was the best film industry to make good movies.

No I see what you're saying...and you're right...but I still thought Hangover 2 comedy was way better than the comedy in Thank You or Housefull...doesn't necessary mean HW is better...but I prefer watching HW movies more!

I think we tend to forget all the marathi, punjabi, gujrati, bengali, and southern films that India makes too...so it's the constant comparison between HW and BW!!!

I for one do tend to see HW superior to BW...and I don't know if I'm influenced by the critics or the media...but that's how I tend to see it...when in reality I haven't seen all the good regional films...so i shouldn't be bias...but somehow I always end up seeing it from a limited perspective like that!
