I think its more a case of "Familiarity breeds contempt" syndrome. I have heard our desi folks often talk about him like this - How can a person like him get to such heights - he copies stuff, there are several better musicians than him they havent gotten recognition.

As for our awards its not like every other category has been deserving so its not like they ignored him on purpose its just that he didnt have any chart busters this year.

Rahman copies?, since when?... he's one of the best musicians of our time, no-one can fuse carnatic, hindustani and western classical, hip-hop, r&b, pop like he does, his arrangement style is in a league of its own.. and unlike other music directors, he is involved in all aspects of music creation.. from the composition, to the arrangement, to sound mixing, to mastering.. whereas what usually happens, is that the music director comes up with the melody, then you have a arranger who fills the song with music etc

Apart from his Indian work, he's composed a score for a Chinese film, where he fuses traditional Chinese and Japanese sounds, co-scored the theatre version of Lord of the Rings, collaborated with internationally reknowned violinist Vanessa Mae, and not to mention his collaboration with Danny Boyle which him earned mainstream international success.

No-one in today's generation has shown the versatility that Rahman has, he deserves all the accolades that he receives.
