^ Maybe it's just me then but I liked Aamir way before he started doing films like Lagaan, DCH etc. As far as I can remember, Aamir was always considered a star (hence, the hype around the 3 Khans ruling Bollywood). A lot of his most famous films are from the 90s: Dil Hai ke Manta Nahin, Hum Hain Rahi Pyar ke, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander, Rangeela, Sarfarosh, Ishq (which I personally thought was crap but whatever), Raja Hindustani...I could go on and on and on. Aamir had at least 1 film release every year from 1988 to 2001. And the above films were definitely "commercial" films and most of them did pretty well. I don't ever recall thinking of his films as unconventional cinema.

Hrithik on the other hand, did Kaho Naa Pyar Hai. Then did a bunch of crapola films for 3 years. Most of them didn't work. But somehow that suddenly made him realize he was a star and would only work with his papa. And thus began the horrific, never-ending Koi Mil Gaya/Kkkkkkkrish series.

^I am his fangirl since QSQT 😆 Yes he was always around and was a star....but never the crowd puller superstar. As his fangirl I remember pulling my hair over it all my teen years! 😆 Those fims look commercial now but they weren't in those times....commercial films of the 90s were mountain top romances, revenge action films and david dhawan type comedies. All the films you mentioned were successful...but not superhits or blockbusters. Ishq ya was commercial but even that did not do that well it was just a hit...it was Dil toh Paagal Hai that year!

In that sense Hrithik is also a star he is also around....but I don't follow his career but to me it seems more like he got insecured and once he got big hit with dad he stuck to dad. Kites did get a huge opening that says something abt his star status....if it was not so expensive the movie could have been huge! Guzaarish tanked because of Kites flopping and SLB's theme....so dark that doesn't work with audience! (and ya 85 crore!!!) As bad as KMG or Krish might have been....Hrithik is our first superhero and how good was he as the father of Krish? :-)

I just think the man needs more than 10 years as I think he is a pretty good actor. He needs to diversify more....in terms of scripts....play some down to earth characters....most of his characrets are very larger than life!

Not entirely true. After his 2nd & 3rd film bombed, he got insecured and signed a bunch of films. So 1990 & 91 he had a lot of releases per year. Most of these films tanked and he went back to one or two films a year after that. He has not done that many commercial films either- most of his hits were just about that: HITs and were quite unconventional films for those times i.e. not typical romance in the mountain types and they were not superhits or blockbusters. Only Dil in 1990 & Raja Hindustani in 1996/97 were blockbusters if I remember correctly. SRK's films were going blocklbuster after blockbuster during the 90s. Aamir was ignored until Raja Hindustani....then people sat up.

I disagree your statement.

Aamir had the following huge hits during '90-'96:
1990 - Dil - nominated Filmfare Best Movie Award
1991 - Dil Hai Ke Maanta Nahin - nominated Filmfare Best Movie Award
1992 - Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander - winner Filmfare Best Movie Award
1993 - Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke - winner Filmfare Best Movie Award
1994 - Andaz Apna Apna - nominated Filmfare Best Movie Award
1995 - Akele Hum Akele Tum - nominated Filmfare Best Movie Award
1995 - Rangeela - nominated Filmfare Best Movie Award
1996 - Raja Hindustani - winner Filmfare Best Movie Award

What has being nominated in FF and other awards got to do with the BO status of the film? Aamir has already made a name for himself in the media by QSQT, so he got praised and nominated for his latter performances. He did have hits, but not hugely successful ones.

Regarding over exposure I have mixed opinions. It again depends on the kind of movies they make.
Example Ajay Devgun the kind of movies he chose this year I enjoyed each and every one of them
and they worked at the BO too ( 2 Blockbusters, 1 hit, 1 average and just 1 flop)
And on the contrary Akshay's movies they just get tedious. The same buffoonerey, the same running around each other, the same slapping people or if not people than a monkey 😆.
I am glad the general audience too is getting tired of him. ( 1 hit and the rest flops.)
I just wish he disappears for a year or two..
And Deepika who had many releases this year, I guess it defintely helped her grow and evolve as an actress and she tried different genres. so i am thinking it was not an overdose of just one type of genre.
And regarding taking a break and coming back like Aamir it just does not work for everyone. Only Aamir can do that. Most of his movies are worth the wait and the rest of the crappy ones he churns out too become blockbusters thanks to his amazing stratategies and marketing skills.
And regarding Hrithik, he started out with lot of promise, he was touted as the next super star, he was hailed as the one to topple the Khans, there was a time when even SRK was nervous looking at his rise. And right now he is going nowhere struggling to get one hit..
He was on the right path for a while then somewhere along things went hay wire... Bad script choices, Overconfidence, trying to follow Aamir policy and a bit of bad luck too..
I see a lot of potential and talent in Ranbir. Hope he utilises it the right way.
.
