ITo his credit, the director chooses a lesser-known chapter of Indian Independence history and this works in drawing you in to some extent. His characters lack depth, however, and the acting, especially by the younger cast and the English officers is stiff. While Deepika Padukone pours sincerity into her character of Kalpana, Abhishek Bachchan is miscast as the heroic Surjya Sen. He narrates his lines indifferently and makes it difficult for you to empathize with him. Sikander Kher, as Nirmal, stands out in comparison, offering his best despite limitations.

I'm going with two out of five for Ashutosh Gowariker's 'Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey'. It's a noble effort that gives you a glimpse of forgotten history. But this hero has feet of clay.

Rating: 2 / 5

The film has an interesting ensemble cast of young boys who enlist in their local school teacher's (Abhishek Bachchan) desi army. Abishek's Bachchan's Surjya Sen is simple, uncluttered and played straight from the heart as are Deepika Padukone's Kalpana Dutta, Vishakha Singh's Pritilata Waddedar and Sikandar Kher's Nirmal Sen. Like the revolution, the romance too is underplayed and both Deepika and Vishakha create a smouldering, yet silent ardour on screen for their respective heroes. For there isn't much time -- and opportunity -- for love under the shadow of the bullet and the bomb, is there? The film maker has tried to recreate the 1930s Chittagong in Goa, but the authenticity of the period piece doesn't suffer. Both the styling and the cinematography of the film exhibit an eye for detail. But it is the director's narrative style and his attempt to re-tell history through a racy-pacy tenor that gives the film its movement and manages to drive the message home.
[i] Deepika, who plays the feisty Kalpana Datta and Sikander Kher who plays Nirmal, do much better. [/b]
Deepika sheds her glam look and looks every bit the character she illustrates. Kudos to her first of all for accepting a challenging role [of a woman revolutionary of the 1930s] so early in her career and then almost living that character in the film, continuing to prove her mettle far ahead of her poise and exquisiteness.

Hey out of the 90 thousand reviews, getting four just about okay reviews is pretty good!! "ALMOST living up to her character", "doing much better than Abhi" (who by the way got shredded into ant size pieces, I would assume my goat would do better than that....oh wait, she did, just watch D6 :-D). Pretty good! Go Padu Go! I am proud!

I'm just happy that deepika is known worldwide. Dhoom tana was played in So you think you can dance and America's best dance crew. BAH's the making was being shown on an american channel. Deepika's posters are on american's mall. In our theatre, they hardley play hindi movies but whenever it's deepika movies, they play it here for sure. I was surprised that KHJJS is being played in our theatre.
A famous american designer on tv was naming all he's favorite celebs on the runway, he named all international supermodels and added deepika's name in there.
It doesn't matter whether her movies flop or become a hit, directors are running after her because they believe in her. Imtiaz and Raju chose her as The next superstar in KWK recent episode

Now flops don't matter?? Why do they matter when it comes to my flop queen? Let's be fair, na mate?

But as we are talking about WORLDWIDE fame which by the way is not America only if you didn't know. Saawariya posters were all over London buses, New York Times talked about Aisha, Delhi 6 was premiered at MOMA (which is a honor in itself). L'Oreal commericals containing my flop queen have been featured in France, Morocco, Germany and Spain. Hollywood Reporter named her as the brightest star of Gen X in all of Asia.

Than it comes to designers, Roberto Cavalli said on national tv he wants my flop queen to walk for him in MILAN but the timings didn't work out. Prabul Gurung who is a very famous "American" designer as well goes gaga over my flop queen everytime she's mentioned and calls her, his favorite. My flop queen isn't even a model. :(

Now about directors, in that same show Farah Khan named her as her favorite. Remember Farah Khan? The one who made OSO? ROM and SLB also think she's one of the brightest stars of the future. Know them? And than there are directors like Roland Jeoff who offered her a movie in Hollywood and than she got offered a role in Eat Pray Love with Julia Roberts, supporting role for EPL but still. Yes Flop Queen, poor Flop Queen.

I didn't mention my Flop Queen. Someone else did. I just answered her and the thing turned into a snow ball. :) And I am not praising my favorite. She's a flop queen. What to praise?

Saw the late night show of the film!

Will post a detailed review later! Overall, I liked it a lot and it was worth watching!👏
But it is most definitely not on par with Swades and Lagaan, either in concept or execution!
PS : I just happened to read somewhere that Komal Nahta mentioned that no one has heard about Sujya Sen! I want to whack that man's head! Who the hell is he to generalize like that? Surjya Sen is mentioned in CBSE History Textbook for Class VIII alongside the Chittagong Revolution, which was an important event in the history of Indian Independence! A detailed account of the Chittagong Uprising is also part of Class XI History Book!
This shows the typical bias that our countrymen have against our countrymen! No offence to anyone, but just because Bhagat Singh is more glorified in the pages of our history does not take away the importance of an independence fighter from a remote part of West Bengal! They both fought and gave their lives for our country! And by passing comments like these, Komal Nahta and his critic colleagues are demeaning and degrading these National Heros!
PPS : I am not a Bengali, I haven't even been near West Bengal, I am not a student of History and yet I am part of the General Population of India! And I have heard about Surjya Sen! Are you reading Mr. Nahta and others?
