'Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey' Review By Komal Nahta

Komal Nahta
0.5/5 stars (🤣)

Star cast: Abhishek Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, Sikander Kher, Vishakha Singh.

Plot: Set in 1930-34, when India was struggling for freedom from the British Raj, it is about a less-known chapter from history books. The film is about the Chittagong Uprising. Abhishek forms his own small army in Chittagong and launches a simultaneous attack on five different strongholds of the Britishers in Chittagong.

What's Good: Nothing really, except, perhaps, the cinematography.

What's Bad: The script; the performances; the dull drama; the music.

Verdict: Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey is an unmitigated disaster.

Loo break: Several.

The script is lacklustre and devoid of the patriotic flavour so necessary for a film of this genre.

PVR Pictures and Ashutosh Gowariker Productions' Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey (UA) is a historical. Based on Manini Chatterjee's novel, Do And Die: The Chittagong Uprising 1930-34, it deals with one small part of India's long battle for freedom from the British Raj. More particularly, it talks about the lesser-known Uprising which took place from 1930-34 in Chittagong.

Surjya Sen (Abhishek Bachchan) is a school teacher who, driven by the passion to set India free from the clutches of the Britishers in 1930, forms his own mini army com- prising friends, some of his own students and young local boys in their teens. His army also has two female members ' Kalpana Dutta (Deepika Padukone) and Pritilata (Vishakha Singh). While Kalpana soon develops a soft corner for Surj- ya, Pritilata is already in love with NirmalSen (Sikander Kher), one of the best friends of Surjya and also a pillar of the mini army.

Besides Nirmal Sen, the other friends of Surjya Sen are Anant Singh (Maninder Singh), Ambika Chakraborty (Shreyas Pandit), Ganesh Ghosh (Samrat Mukherjee) and Lokenath Bal (Feroz Wahid Khan).

Under the leadership of Surjya Sen, the freedom fighters in the Chittagong province of undivided Bengal are planning a revolution that would go on to inspire the entire nation. The group plans five simultaneous attacks on one night, taking the unsuspecting Britishers by surprise. Many of the members of the young group lose their lives in the freedom struggle but it leaves an indelible mark in the minds of the whole nation.

Deepika Padukone doesn't seem to fit into the role of Kalpana Dutta.

Script and Screenplay
First things first. The chapter on the Chittagong Uprising in the history of India's freedom struggle is not so well-known that the audience would want to watch a film based on it. If the primary aim of a film were to educate the audience, the film would be lapped up by them. But the main aim of a film, especially in today's times, is to entertain, and the drama is anything but entertaining. In other words, Manini Chatterjee's novel should never have been made the subject matter of a film.

Raoul V. Randolf and Ashutosh Gowariker's screenplay, unfortunately, has no highs whatsoever. The drama proceeds like in a documentary, devoid of excitement and entertainment. A film on the freedom struggle, which this is, ought to have a high dose of patriotism but it wouldn't be wrong to say that in this film, that's almost completely missing! Even the high energy level one associates with a film on patriotism, is absent. In fact, the drama proceeds so half-heartedly that it rarely evokes a feeling of love for the country, in the minds of the viewers. One more reason for this is probably because the writers have hardly cared to show the atrocities perpetrated by the Englishmen on Indians. They, probably, assumed that the audience would be aware of the same but the assumption proves detrimental to the commercial value of the film because, in the absence of the excesses of the Britishers on screen, the viewer doesn't get charged enough to experience a rush of patriotism within himself.

Yet another drawback of the screenplay is that the incidents unfold on the screen in a mechanical manner so that everything looks like a drama rather than real. Even the key characters of the film aren't established properly because of which the audience's sympathy rarely goes to them.

Dialogues (by Vijay Maurya), which should have been clapworthy and the film's mainstay, are too ordinary for a film of this genre.

All in all, the script is lacklustre and devoid of the patriotic flavour so necessary for a film of this genre.

Ashutosh Gowariker's direction doesn't add much to the weak script. The filmmaker doesn't seem to be in form.

Star Performances
If the script is weak, the acting is also nothing to shout about. Abhishek Bachchan does an ordinary job and seems far from charged enough to play revolutionary Surjya Sen. Deepika Padukone doesn't seem to fit into the role of Kalpana Dutta. Her acting is fair. Sikander Kher tries hard but the effort shows at places; in some scenes, though, he is good. All the three aforementioned actors seem to lack the fire to play revolutionaries and have enacted their roles like they would any other role of today's youngsters. Vishakha Singh has her moments; she has an expressive face and equally expressive eyes. Maninder Singh,Shreyas Pandit, Samrat Mukherjee and Feroz Wahid Khan lend reasonable support and each one has a couple of scenes in which he leaves his mark. Amin Gazi, Rohan Painter, Smit Seth, Palash Muchhal, Nitin Prabhat, Narendra Bindra, Paarth Mandal, Mohsin Khan, Aamir Khan, Abbas Khandwawala, Shubham Patekar, Gaurav Sethi, Aakash Joshi, Vikramjeet Virk, Jan Bostock, Monty Munford, Francis Mathew, Paul Gatward, John Tassi, John Pollard, Robert Drury and the others lend fair support.

Direction
Ashutosh Gowariker's direction doesn't add much to the weak script. The filmmaker doesn't seem to be in form. Sohail Sen's music is a terrible letdown. The songs are far from inspiring, which was the need of the drama. Lyrics (Javed Akhtar) are so-so. Cinematography (Kiran Deohans and Seetha Sandhiri) is very nice. RaviDewan's action is commonplace.Editing (DilipDeo) should've been far more tight. Sets (Nitin Chandrakant Desai) are good. Technical and production values are alright.

Verdict
On the whole, Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey will meet with a disastrous fate at the box-office. It has opened to dull houses and it has nothing to warrant a pick-up.

The Story:

Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker and produced by Ajay Bijli, Sanjeev Bijli and Sunita A. Gowariker, Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey stars Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Vishakha Singh, Sikander Kher, Mahinder Singh, Shreyas Pandit, Samrat Mukherjee and Amin Gazi. The Hindi movie is based on Manini Chatterjee's book Do and Die and has been described as a period thriller.

Abhishek plays freedom fighter Masterda Surya Sen, a man who alongside an army of only 65 men won a battle against the sophisticated British army in Chittagong and declared independence on April 18, 1930. Deepika plays a Bengali woman named Kalpana Datta who against all odds participate in the freedom movement and fight for her country alongside all the brave men of Masterda Surya Sen's army.

The Cast:

Abhishek Bachchan as Masterda Surya Sen
Deepika Padukone as Kalpana Datta
Vishakha Singh as Pritilata Waddedar
Sikander Kher as Nirmal Sen
Mahinder Singh as Anant Singh

The Crew:

Producer: Ajay Bijli, Sanjeev Bijli and Sunita A. Gowariker
Director: Ashutosh Gowariker
Music Director: Sohail Sen

What Worked:

The story definitely has depth and the second half of the movie really makes the idea of the movie come alive. The period film's latter half offers great acting both from Abhishek, Deepika and the rest of the cast. The action scenes are well done and time flies as the intriguing story becomes more and more intriguing.

What Didn't:

The first half of Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey has a hard time kicking off. Some scenes are awkward while others are right out bad, especially from the actors playing the British soldiers. The two music numbers seem superfluous and the love story between Abhi and Dips is not very well developed.

The Soundtrack:

Sohail Sen impresses us with his quality music for Khelien Hum Jee Jaan Sey. The composer respectfully adapts his music to fit the film's needs. This music is sure to help the film's flow and add to the intensity of many scenes.

Slated or Rated:

After its slow start, Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey picks up and offers viewers action filled scenes, emotional sequences and heartfelt acting. For anyone in the mood of a serious film, along with a history lesson, this movie is a must.

Rating:

4/5 Stars(👍🏼)

New Releases Very Dull: Phas Gaye Re Obama Best Bet

Friday 3rd December 2010 17.00 IST

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

The three new releases Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey, Raksth Charitra 2 and Phas Gaye Re Obama have all opened to very dull houses. All three films have taken 10-20% opening on their varying release sizes. Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey has a fairly big release, Rakht Charitra 2 is mainly a single screen release while Phas Gaye Re Obama is restricted to multiplexes only

Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey is very poor all over and it would need a miraculous pick up to even have decent collections over the weekend as opening is extremely low.

Rakht Charitra 2 is even worse than its predecessor Rakht Charitra 1 but it was expected as the first film flopped badly. The only hope for the film was at single screens but looking at the very low numbers at single screens in the North that is now a long shot.

Phas Gaye Re Obama has also opened very poorly but on a controlled release. The reports of the film are decent and if these reports can translate into collections it could be the one that comes out on top this weekend.

Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey Has Very Poor Start

Friday 3rd December 2010 12.30 IST

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey opened to extremely poor houses at multiplexes around the country. The single screen response is likely to be no better apart from possibly the Bengal area.

A prime multiplex like PVR Chandigarh took an opening of just 22% on the first show while other majority of multiplexes were even lower. The opening of the film is around 10-20% depending on location.

Komal Nahta's review stinks....awful. How could he say the story should not have been made into a movie because people don't care? People don't care because people don't know! Nothing wrong in telling a story that very few people have any interest....maybe the making stinks, the director stinks, the actors stink....it can be a horrible movie....but a story about kids giving up their life for your freedom can never stink! Nahta's review: -10/10 😆

Its really heart breaking when movies such as these are rejected by the audience In midst of G3 and Dabaang can't we make an effort to watch such movies just so that we dont forget ? Even if the direction/acting is crap - atleast an effort has been made to bringforth this story. It was a risky move for sure for all involved.

That's what a lot of reviews said....that they don't know much about Surjo Sen. So my guess is it may not be part of Histroy in school in other parts of India like Bhagat Singh etc. 😕 Or was it a lack of promotion? 😕

Rajeev Masand: 'Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey' fails to move

Cast: Abhishek Bachchan, Deepika Padukone

Director: Ashutosh Gowariker

'Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey', directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, has the earnestness of a school play, but lacks the cinematic sweep of the director's most accomplished film, 'Lagaan'.

Gowariker delves into the story of the 1930 Chittagong Uprising, a pre-Independence revolt in Bengal, where a local school teacher and his band of fellow revolutionaries galvanized a group of teenagers to rise against the British. This inspiring story, based on Manini Chatterjee's book 'Do And Die: The Story of the Chittagong Uprising', details an elaborate plan conceived by Surjya Sen and his team, in which they launched attacks on five power centers of the British in one single night.

Poll

What's your reaction to 'Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Se'?

Dislike

Sadly, the real-life patriotic struggle gets lost in translation to the big screen. Even while you admire the courage and fervour behind this little-known revolution, a part of you remains unmoved. Gowariker sets up the background of the Chittagong Uprising painstakingly, yet forgets that one most important detail – he fails to infuse life and passion into his film. Under his heavy-handed approach, most of 'Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey' turns into just what you dreaded – a dry history lesson.

In a rather tedious first half, Gowariker establishes how Surjya Sen, played by Abhishek Bachchan mobilizes the uprising. His patriotic army includes of a group of teenage boys who rebel against the idea of a British troop taking over their football field to set up camp. Hearing of Surjya's Indian Republican Army, they sign up to rise against the goras. Joining Surjya, his friend Nirmal, and the rest of their comrades is Kalpana Dutta (played by Deepika Padukone) and her friend Pritilata Waddedar, the only women in the uprising.

In its second half, 'Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey' picks up pace. The plot becomes more involving as the revolutionaries execute the raid into the British armory. Subsequently, the scenes in which they escape, are hunted down, and die as martyrs, are particularly poignant. Yet, clocking at almost three hours, the film drags its feet. You wish once again that Gowariker exercised more restraint.

To his credit, the director chooses a lesser-known chapter of Indian Independence history and this works in drawing you in to some extent. His characters lack depth, however, and the acting, especially by the younger cast and the English officers is stiff. While Deepika Padukone pours sincerity into her character of Kalpana, Abhishek Bachchan is miscast as the heroic Surjya Sen. He narrates his lines indifferently and makes it difficult for you to empathize with him. Sikander Kher, as Nirmal, stands out in comparison, offering his best despite limitations.

Also lending Gowariker's canvas a flat feel is the lifeless cinematography, and a particularly uninspired soundtrack by Sohail Sen. Watching 'Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey', it's hard not to be reminded of the emotional depth that AR Rahman's stirring soundtracks invested into the director's previous films.

Alas, despite its important subject, what's missing in this film is drama, conflict and outrage. It's precisely why 'Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey' ends up boring. The director who made audiences leap to their feet and cheer as Bhuvan's team of villagers won that nail-biting match in 'Lagaan', fails to turn the Chittagong Uprising into engaging cinema.

I'm going with two out of five for Ashutosh Gowariker's 'Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey'. It's a noble effort that gives you a glimpse of forgotten history. But this hero has feet of clay.
