If you are, lemme tell u, its no laughing matter. Many a times, overseas degrees are not accepted in American countries and they HAVE TO work at such places. I know many of my friends' parents who do that and put together their money to pay off the mortgage. Doctors from India driving cab's during summers and going to uni from sept-april. Engineers working in factories, giving up their career dreams so that they can afford a better future for their kids. Nothing funny about it. You opened a topic stating your(rightful) unacceptance about the portrayal of NRI's in Indian Cinema and you, yourself are laughing it off? Quite ironical!

If not, my apologies for jumping to a conclusion.

Whoa whoa, damn girl kill me won't ya? LOL I'm not making fun of anyone, but simply stating that not everyone in the states have degrees and i laugh about everything so don't take my "haha's" seriously :P As a matter of fact, when I was in uni, i myself worked at a fast food restaurant to pay for my tuition =) Just caz I have a degree and a a good job now, doesn't mean I look down upon people who aren't as privileged as me. That was the whole point of my topic btw, that not all desis in the States are privledged rich brats, some of us do work to support ourselves =P

My previous post was to add on to my young friend's post about indian's outside of india that some of us work in fast food rest and factories too!! i don't know where I said that it's bad that they do O_o

Ya, okay, well..sorry for jumping the gun. I, myself, have worked at every place throughout high school and uni. so that I dont get buried in debt. Its okay, no job is big or small. It teaches us humility, unlike, our counterparts* who watch our exaggerated versions while being handed everything on the platter by their kaam waali bai's.

👏 👏

Exactly!!!

I get an image of "Baba Juice" with your post though haha!! Jokes aside, i do agree =) And a lot of times we go through a heck lot of stereotypes, especially after the whole 9/11 thing, but definitely it makes us stronger!! Yeah they showed it in My name is Khan, but it was just too extreme. Iono!! it's weird...

Ok I think there's a slight mis-comparison going on in this post. We're comparing middle-class NRI's with upper class Indians. Not quite the same thing. A middle-class NRI is definitely better off than a middle class Indian living in India. Yes, we work at fast-food places or department stores. Yes, we work part-time to fund our college education. Yes, we struggle. But our living conditions, the opportunities available to us and just the environment we're brought up in is arguably much much better than an average Indian who's parents don't have the money to send his kid to college. More than that, once we're OUT of college, our struggles are probably nothing compared to the kids in India who go to college but still have to fight the system and millions of people to get a job that will pay probably half the amount of money we get paid. Obviously, I'm stereotyping but I really don't think a middle-class Indian family travels abroad and buys his family Armani and Gucci and Dior. In general, the amenities and benefits a middle-class American has available to them are probably a lot better than those available to a middle-class Indian.

But yes, Indian movies really need to get a reality check. Just because someone has grown up in the West or is "modern" does not make them characterless or immoral. I probably consider myself more American than Indian and while many might frown upon this kind of thinking ("oooh she's lost her culture" ), I can damn well tell the difference between right and wrong and take care of myself and that's what matters. As long as someone is a good person, I don't see why it even matters what their "culture" is.

Haha.. I love you gurll... so with you on everything..😆😆..

kids in india dont do a fraction of the work that NRI kids do.. i started working when i was 16..it wasn't the greatest job but i was one proud 16 year old.. first place i went to with my paycheck was Sprint
..😆 I wanted a phone so badly.. to date.. i haven't had my dad pay for any of xyz expenses.. whereas my cousins.. they ask for money to go eat gol-gappas.. these are guys in their 20s..😆😆..

i have a $hit load of student loans.. i get reimbursed for a portion of it frm my work.. but there's still a whole lot i have to pay back..

don't even get me started with that weight..😆
.. i weigh 120-125 which is normal for my height.. BMI is just on point.. but every aunt and their mother pick on me for my weight.. "kyun kareena ka bhoot sar pe sawaar hai.. 10kg weight toh hor hona chahiye.."😲😆😆😆😆

True the topic went into a different direction, and there's no point in discussing that in the bollywood section.

But going back to the topic, I'd really like to see a movie based on struggles that NRI's face, and a realistic portrayal, not over the top.

Rant done.

so true..😆😆😆.. my white guy friends go crazy on indian food.. and love how there is like an underlying respect for parents/culture in everything we do.. whether its stressing the time we have to get home by or refusing a drink even though daddy isn't there staring down at you..

ok i'll stop.. it's cheesy.. but i love the desi culture.. and how parents have still managed to instill these values in their children..😳😆

ps. Dolly is back..😛😆
