I guess I'm in the minority when it comes to Katrina's acting in Namaste London, people like her character Jess who've been born and brought up there do NOT talk like that. I don't even know what accent that was, that she was using, seemed like a hybrid of American and British.

I don't think it's fair to judge someone according to what degree they want to adapt to (though I've been guilty of the same) when they move to another country or have been living there for their entire life. Likewise people back home shouldn't judge someone from abroad for not adapting 'enough' or too much. Some people conform while others are naturally comfortable doing so.

Portrayal of the NRI's in the Desi Movies is very stereotypical, exactly the same way the western world portrays India or Indians in their movies or the TV Shows. Again very stereotypical.

Anyone's watching The Outsourced on NBC.

Outsourced is racist both ways - I guess they are equal opportunity racists.😆
I like that Indian Boss character - Rajeev - I swear I had one like him when I started working at a multinational. The show is pretty funny tho. I still laugh over last week's episode. "How nice an Indian and white man breaking bread on Thanksgiving." "You do know what happened to the Indians after that right ?" 🤣

Yeah usually its just Indians being typecast with that annoying accent. Some things are totally OTT but one has to remember it is a comedy and Americans arent very respectful of themselves either. I dont watch it regularly either. Another line that cracked me up was from one of the older episodes where the guy who is a stud on the phone says - I cant beleive I am chatting with all these white girls from exotic places like Idaho, Fresno ,Wyoming 😆 Getting back on topic - Subash Ghai is another one of those who villifies NRIs. And yeah somebody mentioned Purab aur Paschim - that was the height😕 There was a movie called Mitr I think - Shobhana was the lead actress. It depicted the lifestyle of an Indian housewife in California pretty well.

Bollywood plays to almost every stereotype out there.

Whether it is the "fun punjabi guy", the "sweet innocent gujrati", the "rough n tough jatt", "snooty NRIs", the "funny fat girl"

😆 It will take a generation to change!

I think The Namesake was a good movie that showed a realistic depiction of traditional Indians vs. their American-born kids. Sadly, there are not many movies like this.

actually... prejudices are everywhere, not only in bollywood, but in hollywood, and i guess other industries (don't quote me on that, though)... my knowledge is limited to bolly and holly...! 😆
and karan's depiction is actually not that completely off... there are several upper class desis who are like that... of course, there is some exaggeration... different people are living in different circumstances... even in india, there are a lot of people from middle class families who do tutions so they can manage to pay their college fees... so it's not like that only people here struggle to pay their fees... it happens a lot back home as well... though, i don't agree completely that Indians here are much more Indian at heart than Indians living in India... that's not completely true...
karan's movies about NRI's work overseas because people here can relate to it... otherwise, they would not work so well... he does exaggerate though, like many other filmmakers...!
but some of the best movies about the NRI's are the ones that are made by the NRI directors... i remember Mitr... haven't seen that in so long... it was a really good movie...!

well i think every stereotype has two sides. I go to was born and raised in the US. Although, my mom was born in pakistan her parents were born in india. When I was in highschool I learned that obviously not a lot of people fit the karan johar stereotype but there was a good group that did. I knew several people like Saif's character in kal ho na ho and I knew lots in priety zinta's position from the same movie. I knew people like abhishekh's character as well. Although, A LOT like kajol's famly from ddlj who run gas stations. Now that I go to university- i have met several international students from india and pakistan and yeah hey party hard! Like when I go out wih them- they get trashed and high and spend a whole lot of money. I dont drink or do drugs but I party so its interesting for me to see who they act. obviously there parents dont know what they do( at least all the kids I know) - so i think the wealthy there are like the wealthy here.

all stereotypes have some truth to them. there are groups that exist like the one karan describes. obviously there are others to but that may not be the demographic he wants to use- its his movie. if you dont like them, dont watch them.
