I watched it yesterday. I was up for something light-hearted and this was completely what I was looking for. Now, the movie isn't that great. There's really no story. It's quite similar to LAK and somewhat IHLS. However, if you're looking for a sweet, light film..then this is the one.

Both Deepika and Imran have improved a lot! And I thought both were good in their roles. I liked the side characters too- the ones who DP lived with in Australia. They were good too.

So yea, if you want to watch a "time-pass" sort-of movie, then this is perfect. It's nothing mindboggling. It's just simple.

MOVIE REVIEW

Break Ke Baad

Charting a Friendship Through a Lifetime of Films

By MIKE HALE
Published: November 24, 2010

If you squint a little, "Break Ke Baad" doesn't look much different from an average — in 2010, perhaps slightly above average — Hollywood romantic comedy. This being an Indian movie, the stars are more attractive but less naturally funny than the Hollywood norm.

More About This Movie

Reliance Big Pictures

Deepika Padukone and Imran Khan in a scene from the Bollywood romantic comedy "Break Ke Baad."

Deepika Padukone and the Wisconsin-born Imran Khan play Aaliya and Abhay, inseparable and movie-besotted childhood friends (we learn this during an infernally long opening-credits sequence) who become an inseparable but unmarried young couple. Their rocky road to commitment encompasses struggles between tradition and modernity, duty and dreams, and, most important, male (steadfast, dull, basically right) and female (headstrong, selfish, essentially wrong).

For the American viewer the minor pleasures of the knockabout comedy and the pretty locations (Mauritius stands in for the Australian Gold Coast, where Aaliya escapes from the pressures of home and love) may not completely block out the gender inequities of the screenplay, by Renuka Kunzru, and the direction, by Danish Aslam.

The impetuous and headstrong Aaliya, referred to several times as a no-nsense person, bears far more of the film's opprobrium than the stolid Abhay. Aaliya disobeys her mother, a famous actress (played by the famous actress Sharmila Tagore), by trying to follow in her footsteps. Acting is a dangerous career choice for a woman, apparently, because it encourages gossiping among the aunties and cheating by the husband.

"Break Ke Baad" ("After the Break"), in keeping with the changing face of Bollywood, is played in a mostly naturalistic style, without musical numbers, though there is the erotic application of henna paste. A strong element of movie nostalgia is present, however, with Aaliya and Abhay dating the stages of their friendship and courtship to films like the 1987"Mr. India" and the 1998 "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai."

The cultural references seem fairly easy for the non-Indian to grasp, but non-Hindi-speaking viewers may wonder how well the subtitles — which appear under both the Hindi and English dialogue — are communicating the essence of the script. Perhaps it's just a matter of economy, but it's jarring when the screen says, "You idiot," and the actress says, in English, "You sexy son of a bitch!"

Break Ke Baad

[ 0 ]

Director: Danish Aslam
Cast: Imran Khan, Deepika Padukone, Sharmila Tagore, Shahana Goswami and Yudhishthir Urs
Release Date: 2010-11-26 00:00:00
Quick Take: Sweet, smart love story

A sweet, smart story that seems straight out of someone's life. Break Ke Baad has an endearing everyday quality sans the maudlin filmi twists and turns that reek of reality. Aliya (Deepika Padukone) and Abhay (Imran Khan) have known each other all their lives and have been dating ever since they can remember. She is the chalk to his cheese, the shot of extra foam to his latte. He is sorted, quiet, indulgent and patient, very patient. She is wild, willful, self-centered and selfish in a self-absorbed, I-me-myself way. He knows they will end up together. She is commitment phobic. She wants to be a movie star, he just wants to be with her. And then they break up. And get back. But obviously. But what happens in between is the crux of the film.

The film works because you have no choice but to fall in love with these two people. You love Abhay for his tolerance, his understanding, his goodness and his instinctive wisdom about Aliya. You love Aliya because she is who she is. She knows not another way. And if she breaks up with Abhay just like that, that too is just characteristic. Debutant director Danish Aslam seems to have lived these characters or at least known people like them. His victory stems from the fact that he doesn't give in to clichs except in the finale. A little like in Jab We Met, we see Aliya's evolution very distinctly and Abhay plays the perfect foil. The situations are original and alternate between insightful, wry and just plain endearing.

Break Ke Baad is not just about love, it is also about what it does to us. You can throw it out of the window but it will return tongue firmly in cheek, because that is the nature of the beast. And if two people are meant to be together they will be. While you root for Abhay's quiet affection and endless understanding, you also want Aliya to find her way. Even if she's being mean, shallow and stupid along the way. As Abhay's bua (played wonderfully by Lilette Dubey) in the film says, "Tum log sab kuch chahte ho, lekin dard nahi?" or some such. What she means basically is there is no shortcut to love. It's a mean bitch that will take its due from you. "Be fearless," she tells Abhay who needs to muster up his courage about things that are not just about Aliya.

BKB is an intelligent film with very few flaws. The last 30 minutes seem a little stretched and the climax is a little forced. The supporting cast is fabulous. Sharmila Tagore brings dignity and charm to her sketchy role and Shahana Goswami shines as Nadia. Someone please rediscover this amazingly talented girl and give her more to do. Yudhishthir Urs is droll and funny and plays his part well.

As for the lead actors, they are perfectly cast. Deepika throws herself into Aliya with such aplomb it's fun to watch. Her spontaneity and confidence flood the screen. And Imran's role becomes him. He is lovable and you want this nice guy to get the girl. Possibly box her ears and tell her to behave but get her ultimately.

Break Ke Baad is possibly the best love story we have seen all this year and maybe last year too. Danish Aslam take a bow. Encore please.

So true, Aishu! I just hope I can judge the movie for what it is, leaving my biases aside (which is going to be so very difficult cuz I think these two look gorgeous together..but apparently, they have no chemistry in the movie :( ) 😆

Ok so going by w/e response available, some ppl loved it, some are indifferent & ofcourse, the guys r going to hate it 😆 ...

Ugh, Danish! kept on saying how lucky he felt to be the first to cast these two gorgeous looking ppl. Couldn't u exploit this opportunity to the fullest? 🤔

@Kawal: LOL! Silly us 😆

Let's face it. Most romantic comedies are predictable to the core. You already know what's going to happen in the end. It's the way they are presented and their treatment is what makes or 'breaks' a film.

We've seen a host of romcoms this year. I HATE LUV STORYS, AISHA and ANJAANA ANJAANI to name a few. Now, it's BREAK KE BAAD. After JAANE TU YA JAANE NA and I HATE LUV STORYS, Imran Khan is once again part of a film which he is best suited for. It also sees Imran and Deepika being paired for the first time.

Before we get to the intricacies, BREAK KE BAAD has one of the best opening credits that we have ever seen. Right from a cinema screen to a t-shirt to steps to a terrace floor, the opening names appear innovatively, leaving a grin on your face.

The producer of the film, Kunal Kohli has denied BREAK KE BAAD being similar to LOVE AAJ KAL, and he's right. It is a story of two childhood friends, Abhay Gulati (Imran Khan) and Aaliya Khan (Deepika Padukone). They both love each other. Aaliya is a feisty aspiring actress. Abhay is a confused guy who works with his father but doesn't love what he's doing. Aaliya decides to go to Australia for studies and the 'distance' between their relationship increases. Barely a few months after Aaliya has left, Abhay reaches Australia to be with her. But the growing differences between them, forces Aaliya to break-up with him.

Debutante director Danish Aslam doesn't show us anything which we haven't seen in past. Although that's still fine, the execution is feeble. It starts well, but soon become a test of your patience every passing second. The narrative becomes very dreary break (interval) ke baad. Abhay and Aaliyah move frequently between India and Australia, but there is no movement in the story. There are no twists throughout the film, and the one that is there in the climax, is too good to be true.

The funky, conversational dialogues are very relatable. There aren't many lighter moments, which is a must for a romcom. Lilette Dubey blaming the several remakes of Devdas for spoiling the youth is uproarious and so is Abhay changing his relationship status on facebook to 'It's complicated'. Wish there were more of such moments. Vishal-Shekhar's music is wonderful with many hummable songs. Andre Menezes choreography captures the beauty of Australia effectively.

Imran Khan is well suited for the role of a lover boy and gives a decent performance. Deepika Padukone enthralls you with an earnest act. Even though they are good individually, the chemistry between them is missing. Sharmila Tagore is very good. Lilette Dubey is great and gets to deliver some hilarious lines. Shahana Goswami is admirable and so is Yudhisthir Das. Navin Nischol is good in his small role.

BREAK KE BAAD is an average affair which doesn't 'break' new ground in romcoms.

BREAK KE BAAD' Movie Review

Published on 25-11-10 11:15 PM

Director:
Danish Aslam
Cast: Imran Khan, Deepika Padukone, Sharmila Tagore, Yudhishthir Urs,
Shahana Goswami
Rating: **

Advice: It's not even a date flick, it's just not going anywhere folks!

Here's a love story of the Now generation…but sadly it is nowhere near wow! To begin with the film has a vaporous plot and all along it pretends to be a sequence of cute moments. Like two school kids watching Mr India, all agape and reciting the dialogue along with Mogambo. They discover a common chord between them right there and hit
it off. They go to the same school and grow up watching movies from the projector room as the boy's dad happens to be the owner of the theatre. Predictably they kiss and fondle each other and 'get together'.

The now grown-up twosome - Aaliya Khan (Deepika Padukone) and Abhay Gulati (Imran Khan) are often found bickering and squabbling affably most evenings on the terrace, swigging some beer and smoking. Welcome to the world of 'Now' generation of urban India!

Aaliya and Abhay drive around cutting smart jokes and sharing a good rapport with urchins at traffic signals who chirp 'I love you sweetie!' every time the cute couple passes their kerb.

But Ms Aaliya isn't happy with her perfect world, she wants to 'take risks' and 'see the world' and be an actor against her mother's (La Tagore in mul kurtis and trousers) wishes. She sneaks herself into an Australian college to break free.

Ahem! The plot is see through here on. Aaliya gets to Australia and shacks up with Indian siblings – hard-as-nails sister Nadi (Shahana) and her horny yet friendly brother Cyrus (VJ Yudi). Aaliya also lands herself a meaty role in the campus play. While back home her pining boy friend frets and fumes in his father's office. The only thing he
still enjoys doing is making funny faced sandwiches and kilos of biryani.

Long distance telephone calls only whet Abhay's jealousy. He takes the next flight out and lands up down under in Australia. By now, Ms Dimples is getting film offers and she feels bogged down by his sudden appearance. She decides to "break up" with him. And if you think, Abhay is now going to find his bearing by setting up his own eatery
and Aaliya is going to start missing him. Bravo! You are as clever as the screenplay & dialogue writer Renuka Kunzru.

On the whole, this is a film that really goes nowhere – even though they actually go down under to foreign shores.

The only thing that works in favour of the film is bootilicious Deepika in snazziest shorts and lover boy Imran with those melting brown eyes. The lead couple is totally engaging and makes the whole film a tolerable watch.

Veterans Navin Nischol, Sharmila Tagore and Lilette Dubey pitch adequately. Shahana Goswami in beach gear tries to be hip and Yudi in silk dressing gown tries to be cool – and they try hard.

As far as debutant Danish Aslam is concerned, he manages to conjure up quick fire moments like Abhay chiding Aaliya about going off to Australia to pursue a course in Mass Communication saying," Do(he and Aaliya's mom) logon se toh communicate nahi kar payi tum…" but these are like soap bubbles – so fragile and so momentary.

Andre Menezes' cinematography is admirable but Vishal Shekhar's music and Prasoon Joshi lyrics do nothing to enhance the film's appeal.

Break Ke Baad …kya?...nothing much really!!!
