@iHrithik last nite watched Guzaarish...masterpeice ur best performances till date, congtrates 2u, bhansali n team....no words to express via web Retweeted by HrithikRules and 4 others
An excellent movie, after a long time! Sanjay Leela bhansali has come back to form!, 16 November 2010
Author: vijaythewriter from Oman
GUZAARISH Once again, and after a long time according to my standards, we got an opportunity to be amongst the first few to have watched the first public screening of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's newest venture, GUZAARISH. And two hours later, when I came out of the theatre with a lump in the throat, I couldn't but marvel at this outstanding creation on celluloid. Co-produced by UTV along with Sanjay Leela Bhansali, this clearly is Bhansali's best directorial effort till date. The theme is novel, at least in the Indian film scene and beautifully portrays a wide range of emotions. Love and caring; frustration and angst; helplessness and joy; anger and exhilaration are all presented with such finesse and perfection that it is difficult, well, nigh impossible to visualize as to how these emotions could have been better depicted on the screen.
The other primary reason for the movie's powerful impact is that the ensembles of actors deliver their finest performances. Hritik Roshan, excels in his role of the magician performer turned quadriplegic and his eyes speak tomes of his inner feelings. Aishwarya Rai reveals that she can act, and wonderfully well, provided the script calls for it and if she has an able director to direct her efforts.
The rest of the cast including the versatile Shernaz Patel, the debutante Aditya Roy Kapoor, the theatre personality Vijay Crishna (who is an Executive Director in one of the Godrej companies) and the graceful Nafisa Ali put in stellar performances. I will be most surprised if the cast members do not pick up more than a handful of awards. The music is also by Bhansali and while the few songs may not be chart busters, the background score is operatic in its expanse and adds to the mood of the various scenes. The dialogues are pithy and meaningful and couched in them are a number of philosophical statements. Bhansali's skill lies in making these not sound like drab monologues. I was reminded of the Hrishikesh Mukherjee directed and Amitabh-Rajesh Khanna starrer Anand whenever there were pathos tainted expressions of philosophy being mouthed on the screen.
And just like it happened to me when I first saw Anand about three decades back, I was moved to tears in a few scenes; tears of a kind which do not cause uncontrollable sobbing, but which moisten one's eyes and leave you with a feeling of restrained, and quietly dignified expressions which speak louder than a thousand words. Bhansali's treatment of Euthanasia is without any melodrama whatsoever and this heightens the impact. Even the last scene is reminiscent of another Hrishikesh Mukerjee film: MILI; you know what is to follow, but still are left with the faint trickle of wishful optimism.
Bhansali has proved that he can recover and recover well from his earlier blue themed disaster Saawariya, although the abundance of blue hues in a few scenes leave us with no doubt about the director's favourite color. Aishwarya looks stunning as well, and although her low cut dress is not what I have seen any nurse wearing, perhaps Bhansali intended it so as to provide some relief to the bed-chained hero! Ram Gopal Verma, who apparently has commented about his not liking her washing Hritik's hair needs to be reminded that Aishwarya looks more sensuous than all his pouting and pelvic thrusting heroines! Although GUZAARISH in the movie refers to the hero's deep desire to be freed from his state, it could also convey the GUZAARISH of every sick person to be nursed by a person like Aishwarya!!
This is not a proper review, but just thoughts. I need to let the whole experience sink in before I can write an appropriate review.
The opening scene of Guzaarish begins with a song "Smile" (I've heard it somewhere, but I cannot recall the singer) and this I think pretty much sets the mood of the movie- there is no problem in this world that you cannot sort, no trouble so big that you cannot smile through it.
I expected the movie to start with focus on Ethan as a magician and gradually show the accident, his life as a quadriplegic and his petition for Euthanasia. Instead within the first 15-20 minutes you are introduced to Ethan's life- his daily routine, the people in his life (who are limited to Sofia his nurse, Devyani-his lawyer/best friend and Dr. Nayak- his doctor) and his petition for death.
What I loved about the movie
There is no melodrama yay yay yay! My biggest fear was that I was going to be faced with some heavy duty tv soap opera with people yelling and screeching at the top of their voice in the court, tears from every character, long speeches, annoying soppy dialogues. Instead I was surprised at how subtle the movie was! It has to be SLB's most subtle work. No annoying background music, the dialogues are to the point, witty dialogues from Ethan when you would least expect it and Sofia's tit for tat responses.
Aditya Roy Kapoor as Omar: He enters the house as this dorky kid whose only aim is to become the greatest magician in the world and he decides to go to the man who was known to be the best in the business. It's not easy for him because Sofia doubts him from the word go and does not make it easy for him. His interaction with Aishwarya is hilarious- she makes sure he goes through hell and he's determined that he wont let her come in the way of learning magic from Ethan. This is the first time I am watching adi in a movie and he is a delight to watch- very relaxed and confident.
Aishwarya: Amazing? That is an understatement. After Jodhaa this is my MOST favorite character played by Aishwarya. She does not speak too much but her eyes speak volumes- there is so much pain in her eyes because of her failed married, she loves Ethan but can't express it. She does not want him to die but has no right to speak because she is "just a caretaker". She cares for him like no one else, devoting 12 years of her life- leaving her husband, her house everything for him and she fights for him till the end.
Hrithik: I need to run through the dictionary to find words! I don't believe he has any sort of competition from any actor of his generation- the man keeps setting the bar higher and higher with each movie he does. I cannot imagine ANYONE but Hrithik playing Ethan. The kind of detailing he brings into his character, I am yet to see another actor do it. His expressions melt my heart, I wanted to cry when he was crying, just run and hug him when he was in pain but helpless because he couldn't move and no one could hear him. His fear and helplessness when Sofia is being physically abused in front of his eyes and he wants to go and help her but cant left me distraught.
Sigh! His portrayal of Ethan is going to win a million hearts.
What I loved the most about Ethan was his positivity- except 2-3 scenes where he is extremely frustrated you can always see him smile through his problems. He falls off the bed but instead of crying about how he can't move he makes a joke of it telling ash that even though his head was on the floor he couldn't see her sexy legs, when the water is falling off the roof in the night and he's frustrated but no one can hear him and come to help him he decides to just play a game with the water takes it easy. I can go on and on, and I will come back to this later.
Music:
Apart from Udi and Tera Zikr Hai the rest of the songs are only 1 minute long, so they do NOT affect the pace of the movie at all.
Udi: Initially when I had seen the promo, I loved it but the first thing that caught my eye was Hrithik's expression. I thought he was OTT, when you see the movie you understand why he has those expressions. Sofia has been such a strict nurse all through those 12 years of his life that he is beyond shocked when he sees her so relaxed and enjoying herself. Sofia herself is shocked at what she has done in the moment but that's the fun of the song.
Jaane Kiske Khwab: The ball dance- GRACEFUL! He moves like a dream, he moves like a dream! I could watch that song on repeat all day.
Tera Zikr: The chemistry between Hrithik and Moni in that song is crackling- uff LOVED IT.
Sau Gram: is a part of Ethan's show and dedicated to one of his listeners.
Bas itni: Okay I am really sorry, memory is messed but I believe this one was when sofia is leaving for the day and ethan is lost in thoughts.
Dhundli: is one of my favs- esp the interaction between ethan and sofia after the song was so cute.
Both my fav songs have been excluded from the movie- Keh Na Sakun and Chand ki Katori.
What a wonderful world: It is Ethan's mama's song and he sings it in her memory- it's heartbreaking
SLB:
Not a big fan of his movies, but this is his best after Khamoshi. He portrays the pain, joy, happiness of the characters beautifully. Moreover, he stunned me with the subtle treatment. Fab!
Hrithik and Aishwarya's chemistry: They are my most favorite pair in the world and for a reason! Not only are they 2 brilliant actors who tend to bring out the best in each other but their choice of scripts together is so amazing! From Dhoom 2 to Guzaarish, they have come a LONG LONG way, their comfort level is superb and they don't need words to communicate with each other. They are amazing.
Monikangana has exactly 3 scenes and 1 song and she only spoke 1 dialogue, which she was pretty pathetic at.
Nafisa ali: has a very short role, I wanted to see more scenes with her and Ethan but alas!
Devyani: She plays Ethan's lawyer and best friend- torn between her friendship and duty towards him. She does a fab job.
Suhel seth as Dr Nayak is efficient, good enough don't need more.
Favorite scenes:
includes spoilers...
When sofia learns of ethans petition
Sofia and Omars first meeting

Could have focused on
The first problem/issue if I may call it that I have with the movie is that they hardly showed Ethan as a Magician, its limited a few flashbacks which I felt was not enough. I wanted to see his glory, the life he lead, the fame he enjoyed, the applauses, the praise he received from the audience which would have helped leave a stronger impact on the mind of the audience once he was bed ridden.
The second was the lack of focus on Ethan-Estella's love, yes you can feel the attraction between the 2 in Tera Zikr Hai but had they given us more detail on her relationship with Ethan, the love they shared, the problems they went through then Estella's entry later in the movie would have made more sense. You could understand why she said what she did and what it meant to her.
But overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. I haven't seen many movies this year, so I don't know but Guzaarish is one of the best movie to come out this year for me.
