Aisha grosses Rs 260 mn over weekend

It seems that Sonam Kapoor as the matchmaker in Aisha has managed to impress the moviegoers. The romantic comedy has garnered Rs 260 million at the opening weekend worldwide. Inspired by Jane Austen's novel Emma, the film was released on 475 screens across India and 135 screens overseas on Friday.

"By such overwhelming weekend collections, the film has set a new benchmark for films with female protagonists. The box office collections are very encouraging," Kamal Gianchandani, President, PVR Pictures told IANS.

Produced by debutante Rhea Kapoor, under the banner of her father's Anil Kapoor Films Company, Aisha has been has directed by first timer Rajshree Ojha and distributed by PVR Pictures.

AishaThe movie is a modern-day adaptation of Austen's 19th century British novel. It stars Sonam as a Delhi-based free-spirited, stylish and spoilt high society girl, who feels she is naturally gifted in finding love matches. She is supported by actors like Abhay Deol, Arunoday Singh, Cyrus Sahukar, Ira Dubey and debutantes Lisa Haydon and Amrita Puri in the film.

"The film is doing well in the big cities and the business is quite encouraging in smaller cities as well," informed Gianchandani.

"Also as compared to Friday, Monday has only seen a drop of 20 per cent, which is quite minimal. Usually a film sees a drop of anywhere more than 40 per cent on a Monday," he added.

Instead of getting mad he come over the next day to make sure she is okay but in his own sort of way. that was so cute of him.....not to mention he was jealous when she went all gaga over dhruv Exactly....they were ALWAYS trying to make each other jealous....ALL the time😆....he'd do it by thumbing Aarti in her face and she'd try to do it by mentioning Dhruv....I just found that hilarious.....even later on in the scene after the diwali party when Arjun comes over to her room next morning and breaks the news about Randhir-Pinky's engagement to her....but the best bits are before he tells her that....how as usual she's taunting him about Aarti and saying something about him having found free time from selling Aarti's CDs? 😆 and later on he's like, "Dhruv toh Bombay chala gaya....ab kya karogi?" and she's like "huh?" and he's like "Squash kiske saath khelogi?"😆....Aisha's SUCH a brat and endless source of amusement for Arjun😆

ol @ the scene bec it's like her hackles went up as soon she saw him admiring what's her face and getting all flirty, then he turned to admire shifali and she was like seething...I think she realized that in Arti there was someone who be a real threat to her and Arjun's bond and she went straight on the defensive. Also it was cute that she picnhed him and he was like oww stop it......lol you can tell Arjun burman only lets Aisha do this kind of stuff and no one else. Another example is when Aisha goes over to say sorry to him, he accepts her aplogy and leaves everything to go out with her and eat snow cones.lol! Great point....so very true....they just shared a very unique and special kind of relationship with each other....like it shows in that apology scene when Aisha's first all bratty like, 'do you think I'm going to say sorry to you?" and he's all bemused and says, 'nahin I'd never expect that'😆 and then after she says sorry....he kinda sighs and smiles and tells her that he can't ignore her even if he wanted to cuz she's always dancing on his head😆....that was a pretty sweet bit I thought....and yeah then they happily go out to eat golas (snow cones)....wish that scene had been longer....they cut out some bits they'd shown in the promos :(( I'd been looking forward to it.
I thought personally that even if they didn't have a scene together they were both aware of each other the whole time. The relationship wasn't big on drama but all the subtleties enhanced the sweetness. WORDDD.....I completely agree....that is what made their relationship so interesting....like we've been saying....the magic was all in the glances, that awareness, the undercurrents running through each scene....there was always something going on underneath the surface....it wasn't an in your face dramatic relationships but the subtleties and the nuances built steadily throughout the movie. At the camp sight when Arjun takes off his jacket and puts it on Aisha, or when he sees her walking with Dhruv and he himself is talking to Arti, he still can't help but notice that Aisha is walking with Dhruv and his wyes wander off to her and Aisha's wander off to his and it's like they are both too scared to explore the attraction that is there.Yepp they are always aware of each other in a way even if they may happen to be with other ppl....but their eyes seem to search each other out somehow....

I admit the dance scene could have been shot better and longer especially the part btw Arjun and Aisha,. this is the scene in the book when emma thanks Knightley for dancing with Harriett (shaifali) at the party and then knightley asks emma who she would dance with next. Emma then says she would dance with him if he wants to because afterall it's not like they are brother and sister that they can't dance. Knightley is all like ofcourse we're not bro and sis and you could feel and shift in their relationship as they dance to a waltz (it's really well done in the 2009 BBC version of Emma) Anyway I think that dance could have been longer but abhay and sonam were pretty good at turning the heat up. Ohh I see...thanks for explaining it in connection with the book....gives it an interesting perspective....Abhay-Sonam did do well in the scene otherwise but yeah it could have been shot better....too hurried in a way.

lol I am glad we think alike...loved reading your thoughts on the scenes Loved reading yours as well :-)
I think part of the problem with dialogues was that in the english versions, the dialogue can be lifted straight from the book and used but in the bolly version alot of the elements from the book might not work.....like the fact that Knightley is the older brother of the borther in law not the younger.....so same with the dialogue they had to be moved to a modern setting and adapted in Hindi. Yeah maybe that could have been a part of the problem....the relationships were a bit different even if they were trying to go for a similar dynamic.....but still I do so wish the dialogues could have been worked on....would have really worked better for the movie overall.

I don't think she meant just light-hearted female oriented films. Aisha is the 1st chick-flick, lighthearted rom com I can think of in Bollywood...that has the high fashion, the friends, the love, fights etc. The ones you mentioned don't really fall into the same category as Aisha.

I like what Anna Vetticad said as well: ...of a heroine-centric film is usualy rona-dhona n social issues. Y? Do they think v Indian women dont hv fun?!!! Aisha is a refreshng ...

Wtched aisha ..Loved it..There are several reasons why i wanted this film to work apart from being a sonam fan
Its chick flick ,produced by a woman,,Directed by woman and yes the main protogonist is a woman...So many firsts where until now men directed a chickflick with their pre-concieved notion of what they felt v women want..Hope this movie paves way for many women to come forward and make chick flicks and dare calling them as one..
They marketed it as achick flick..never put the audeinces under false impression that it is love story of sorts..The way they promoted itt..All the girls who were casted got their fair share of publicity ..Tell me one recent flick where the other cast got this much importance/center stage ????So Ira,amrita and lisa are lucky to hav a chance to be a part of itt..Even the other two guys were given a chance to showcase themselves on public stage..
And the movie..Its a simple story of a higher class girl..So basically its the story of many of us..The way v try to match our sisters/friends with our ideas thinking v kno better than themselves and live in dat bubble for most of the time..V all hav little bit of shefali, pinky and aisha in us..
Coming to performances Sonam was smooth..cant think of any1 who can carry off that wickedness with innocence ...She fit like T..felt bad when pinky, shefali were questioning her motives..But she was trying to do what is best for them according to her or her vision..They could hav asked her to butt off but instead let her change them/hung out with her and when they did not like it bashed her as if they were victims..common everyone is equally responsible for their actions..If aisha changed you it is because u let her ..She did not do it at gunpoint..LOL..
Oh Arjun..*drool drool*..He asks her to butt off and makes snide comments but never gives her proper reasoning/explanation(arjun fans pl be gentle with me) ..He is jealous, insecure nd his emotions are very real...No filmy shilmy...Loved it..Would love to see him do these kinda movies more..he can give imrans/ranbirs/shahids a run for their money
The chemistry is so strong between them..Loved the subtle looks, dialogues EXCEPT the cheesy declaration.
I think women shud make films..it has no double menings,No vulgarity, its clean and crisp and is a fresh breath of air..
Kudos to Chick power ..

LOL ok Arjun was deffo not insecure.....and I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "proper reasoning/explanation"....their relationship was such that they were constantly taunting each other....what exact "explanation" does that need?? He made fun of her obsession with matchmaking and meddling in ppl's lives....that's an intrinsic character trait....why does it need 'proper reasoning and explanation?" :S.....He was a sarcastic person by nature.

But I agree about the strong chemistry b/w them....

He criticises her and taunts her ,But being the "matured one" he could have tried to reason with her..haha..anyway emma is my least fav of all JAs characters....But i felt compassion for Aisha which has stunned me too..

Having said that i can think of lot of would hav beens ,cud hav beens about script and dialogues..But in the end i enjoyed itt...nowhere i was looking at my phone if anyone called or went out to check the restrooms or get myself some snacks or chatted idhar, udhar ki batein with my freinds with whom i went..and they too did not do these things..So yeah it is an engaging film ..what more i want with my ticket money ..I came out of the theater with a smile nd with my mascara in tact..thats worth my ticket price..

thanx 4 explaining what i meant! cz even i meant abt it being a chick flick!😃

@pragya0 -
Aaja Nachle - was issue based wasn't it?i loved the movie n having Madhuri back..but the film didn't click so well with the audience..it was all abt 'let's stone the woman who dared to live her life n her own terms' fighting with the authority/patriarchal society n then it changing 4 the good kind of film..

n i honestly dnt know much about the older films cz i never bothered to watch anything older than 90s movies..n wtever i watched i can't remember..sorry..so can't comment n them..
but still isn't it a relly really long time 4 a female oriented movie like this to be made..

n i personally dnt consider Jab We Met to be all abt female oriented cz it was promoted 110% on Shahid-Kareena love story!!

that is where Aisha is different..no way was it completely promoted on Aisha n Arjun, plus they actually had quite less interaction with each other compared to Aisha n her girl pals!

n no rona dhona..n haha it was a cute girly story..something i'd put in the line of New York Minute, Herbie, Mean Girls(only sonam n the others can act way better!)

so how many more that kind of movies can u name from B'wood?
