P
avithra Srinivasan reviews the Tamil version of Raavan.

The thought that keeps occurring to you as you watch Madras Talkies' Raavanan by ace director Mani Ratnam, is that it certainly looks very beautiful.

The forests are lush; the greenery is breath-taking; the mountains take you to a virgin world where nature is at her bold, wild and untamed best. You're lost in a brilliantly colourful landscape of mists, waterfalls and wet boulders.

But whether the movie satisfies the enormous hype it's generated story-wise, is something else, altogether.

The scene: The forested areas in the vicinity of Ambasamudram, or Megamalai, as it's so eloquently expressed in the local papers. Areas that are inaccessible to outsiders; only the local residents know the place; even then, its treacherous.

The players

Raavanan: Veera aka Veerayyan (Vikram), the man who rules practically every frame, as it were. In the beginning, he comes across as rather schizophrenic. His weird gestures, staccato dialogue delivery and sudden mood shifts are a bit difficult to understand, and it takes you a good deal of time to assimilate his character. But he's easily the backbone of the film; the reason the story even moves, falteringly from scene to scene.

Intensely loyal to his people, his background is supposed to be a gory one. For he's committed crimes too horrible to contemplate. What we're shown, though, is only a part of them, his retribution for his sister's death. What he did before that is anyone's guess, and it's not nearly so frightening as you're led to believe.

Rama: Dev Prakash (Prithviraj), the dashing, handsome archetypal hero who's destined to destroy evil. He's an encounter specialist with 28 successes to his credit. Again, no details are forthcoming. He's the divine incarnation and that's pretty much it.

He wears shades, swings a gun with elan and enlists as many of the forest aides as he can in his search for his captured wife. He's supposed to love her, and his motive in reaching Veera is avenging his wife's capture but what you see doesn't seem to correspond to love.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in Vikram RaavananSeetha: Ragini (Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan), a dazzlingly lovely porcelain doll who wears surprisingly low-cut salwar kameezes that show more of her than ideal, is a cop's wife.

There's a hurried song, Kalvare, that shows her love for her husband and she does exhibit her loyalty to him throughout the film but it's does secondhand, in the way she resists Veera's attempts to subdue her.

Her dialogues are corny, artificially arrogant; one of her first lines is to taunt Veera with a recital that's so jarring you can barely believe it.

In name, she defies him, jumping off waterfalls and fasting, but though she looks quite the angel in distress, she's a little too self-possessed to make an impact. You somehow get the feeling that nothing horrible is going to happen to her, and you're right.

Her change of heart is predictable. At no point does she arouse your sympathy and after a point, her stricken face becomes tedious to watch. She speaks Tamil, but she may as well have spoken Hindi despite Rohini's excellent dubbing. Her dialogue delivery is cringe-worthy.

Hanuman [ Images ]: Gnana Prakasam (Karthik) is one of the few genuinely likeable characters in the film. He drinks, jumps around, chatters incessantly, and though obviously belongs to Dev's "side," is absolutely fearless when it comes to meeting Veera on his own home-ground. He's in character, sympathetic as the situation demands it, and comes across as realistic, despite the caricature-like portrayal.

Kumbakarnan: Singarasu (Prabhu) is Veera's brother, who stands by him through thick and thin. Though he has little screen-space, he portrays the gruff toughie with a heart of gold so well that it warms your heart. His job is to stay by Veera's side, come what may -- and he does it well.

Surpanaka: Priya Mani [ Images ], the National Award winner lives up to her reputation as she plays Vennila, the betrayed sister and the reason for Veera's supposedly horrible rampage against the police. Epics paint her as evil, and with designs on Rama but this story shows her almost as a heroine, and completely lust-free.

Vibeeshanan: Munna plays Sakkarai, a brief role of a peace-maker. But his role is so brief that it's almost pointless though his part in the tale is surprising, and makes Rama appear even blacker than necessary.

Considering such a solid background, obviously talented actors and beautiful settings, not to mention Santhosh Sivan and V Manikandan's scintillating cinematography, Sreekar Prasad's slick editing, A R Rahman's [ Images ] neat score (both background and songs), Sameer Chanda's brilliant art-work, one expected an epic. Not so.

The screenplay, instead of cruising along, stutters and stammers. Suhasini's dialogues make you cringe, and wonder if you're in some Japanese play. The intention is to make Veera the hero but it's been done at the expense of Dev, the Rama of the epic, who behaves so cruelly and with such pointless arrogance that one gets irritated.

There are no twists and turns, nothing in the narration that shows intelligence leaving the viewer detached, with nothing to relate to.

One major redeeming factor, however, is Vikram, the man who carries the film on his shoulders, and touches you in the last ten minutes. The vulnerability in his eyes show you what he's capable of, given the chance.

The other is Priya Mani, who makes it work despite the tiny screen-space she's allowed. The secondary characters work better than the principals, who seem stilted.

Raavanan is a beautiful travel package that shows you the best of Mother Nature, and considerably less of human nature. Go with low expectations, for it has lots of style but little substance.

I was worried about this movie....
Just because of the locales and that the film was shot 99% on or around the water...
It looked too dark for the youngsters...
Surprise no one is appreciating Abhi......sad for him..

Not trying to make comparisons here, but even Raajneeti looked very dry and boring when the Promo's came out! In the sense, it was never targetted towards the young, urban, multiplex visiting population! And it had no huge stars to speak of, minus Ranbir (who is still coming up) and Katrina (who is popular but not enough to carry a film on her own shoulders) The music of the film was also not popular and Prakash Jha hasn't given a single big hit till date before this film.
Despite all the above factors, Raajneeti was not only appreciated by the critics but also by the masses.
A good film will always find its audience, however it is made or promoted.
Abhi is a bit unlucky that way. He is a good actor, but has never found a niche for himself in the last ten years spent in Bollywood! All his hits have been multi-starrer, proving that he still cannot carry a film on his own!

well I would never trust these reviews, I mean if these critics can laud or praise movies like " Badmaash company" "MNIK" "housefull" "love aaj kal etc then I dont know what to say.

I agree that his tamil versions are always better coz he thinks in tamil and then to visualise it in hindi wouldn't have the same impact.

One great thing about Mani is that the movie works is not the heroes or the stars in it but the characters and the performance. I dont want to offend anyone but if rajneeti was made with lesser known stars , I guarantee you it wouldn't have run nor would they have given such "good " reviews.

were as movies like alaipayuthe, mouna raagam, anjali, kaanathil muthamittal all worked coz of the performance and the movie itself.

lets see, I am sure the tamil version would be better coz vikram any day would be a far better performer than abhishek....

no offense to anyone

'Raavan' beheaded by the audience

Extensive film promotion before the release of any film helps the movie big time. But it can only ensure the weekends to go houseful. After that, it is the content of the film which pulls it forward and make it ride on its own merits.

The makers of Raavan left no stone unturned to create a lot of buzz around the film before the release. However, the audiences at the first day first show of Raavan didn't have complimentary words to describe the film.

Ravi Sharma, a college student looks disappointed. He says, "After Abhishek's performance in Yuva and Guru, I was under the impression that this would be the best of all. But Mani has missed the bus this time. Abhishek is good but not very convincing. He has hammed in many scenes."

Abhishek's role, inspired by Raavan is supposed to be the most evil character and create fear whenever he enters the frame. "But he comes across as a crack head. Not taking away the credit for his honest performance, but he becomes too predictable and a bore."

Speaking about Aishwarya's performance, there is a lot that she has to do, from jumping off the cliff to getting stuck in a tree to many other things.

"Aishwarya is looking so beautiful. I personally prefer her in a deglamorised role. She adds so much of freshness to the film. Her performance is very real and I would rate it as her best. This was definitely different from all her other characters. But I haven't really had a good time watching the film," says Ashwini Desai, a law student.

Quite a few people complained about the first half being very boring and also of its poor script.

Mitesh Manek says, "The first half is so bad. Actually I had almost forgotten the bad experience of watching Kites. But Raavan reminded me of it again. Throughout the film, there is rainfall and waterfall everywhere. It is so slow that I took a nap for sometime because I was sure I am not going to miss out on anything important."

Mani Ratnam has made fabulous films in the past but this one definitely does not look like his best work, at least if you go by the audience's first reaction.

Govinda, though had a small role, did add a bit of laughter in the theatre. "Govinda was good but his role was not much. He just comes and goes but definitely adds some lighter moments," says Rupesh, a 12-year-old boy, who came along with a bunch of friends.

Being a Mani Ratnam film, the film might have a good opening at the box office. But it definitely has a rough road to travel from Monday. It will be interesting to see how the Tamil version fares, where Vikram is playing Abhishek's character.

Janta Verdict: Hugely disappointing.

I think this movie lacked "CONTROVERSIES".
I have seen over the period of time....especially now a days...the movies are hit or become hits or get the huge openings when they have controversies associated with them.
Ravaan on the other hand no controversies related to it except the elephant episode or Mani's health...that too were only during th emaking...
I absolutely think that if the whole team would have gone to IIFA and the tv would have been abuzz with the protest or morchas then this movie would have got god opening....
Controversies are very important for a movie to attract masses.,....

Raavan Movie Review
Posted in : Bollywood, Reviews|June 18th, 2010

Mani Ratnam is a director who revolutionized Tamil cinema with films like Nayagan, Roja, Bombay and many more. In Hindi, some of his films like Dil Se and Guru are watched and loved even today. So quite obviously, Raavan starring Ratnam's favorite actor Abhishek Bachchan carries huge expectations. The film adapted from one of India's greatest epics, the Ramayana, also stars Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Tamil superstar Vikram, Govinda, Ravi Kissen, Nikhil Diwedi amongst others.

Raavan is an important film for Abhishek, who hasn't tasted commercial success in a long time (Dostana was a multistarrer). But the film is most important for Reliance Big Pictures, who have invested truck loads of money into this Mani Ratnam film and are yet to recover from the Kites debacle.

The story is one that we all know. Raavan abducts Ram's wife Sita in Ramayan, here it is Beera (Abhishek Bachchan) who has kidnapped top-cop Dev Pratap Sharma's (Vikram) wife Ragini (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan). On his way to rescue his wife, Dev Pratap is helped in the forest by Laksman (Nikhil Diwedi – Laksmana) and officer Sanjeevani Kumar (Govinda – Hanuman).

First the negatives, since there are so many!

What starts off as a promising film soon turns into a damp squid. Seriously, its hard to believe this is a Mani Ratnam film. The biggest problem with Raavan is the poorly written lead character of Beera. He neither looks menacing, nor does evoke fear. His makeup makes him look more like a buffoon
and Abhishek just doesn't get his dialogue delivery right. And since the focus is entirely on Beera, you never really connect with the film.

The second half is a torture. Its stretched way too long, the pace is unbelievably slow and the Agnipariksha scene – where Ragini is asked to undergo a Polygraph test (Sach Ka Samna style) would have unanimously won the 'worst scene of the year' award, if there was one.

Also the film makes no sense, the writing is incredibly flawed. There are no twists nor any turns and if you know the story of Ramayana, this film is way too predictable. The whole sequence which was supposedly meant to be a twist – when Ragini actually starts getting emotionally attached to Beera – is poorly written and executed.

Vikram as Dev Pratap Singh is wasted. He has limited screen time and absolutely no scope for histrionics.

Vijay Acharya's dialogues don't go well with the film.

Three and a half Positives

The well-choreographed action sequences, especially the fight on the bridge.

The cinematography – the locales, the jungles, the tough locations the film has been shot in - have been beautifully captured by Santosh Sivan camera.

AR Rahman's music is good. Behne De stands out.

The makeup artists get Aishwarya's look right and she does well in certain scenes, which ain't reason enough to watch Raavan.

The performances (in order)

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is good in most scenes and looks incredibly beautiful for a lady in her late 30s.

Vikram gets it right in a short role without much scope.

Govinda is decent as Sanjeevani Kumar, although looks a little too old for the role. Nikhil Diwedi is good. Priyamani and the rest are wasted.

But what comes as terribly disappointing is Abhishek Bachchan's performance. In every single Mani Ratnam film so far, Bachchan Jr has delivered, strangely this time around he doesn't get it right.

Overall, Raavan is one of the most disappointing films of the year. The opening has been shockingly dull. The occupancy for some of the morning shows were as low as 15 – 20%.

Zero content with a poor opening spells disaster.
