U cant really blame the actors if a film dosnt do well. Mani is brilliant film maker. He obviously had some kind of a vision for this film. I think this film solely didnt work due to the kind of audience we have nowadays.

So what if Mani is a brilliant film maker???Is it a rule that the audience have to go watch it just cos he was supposed to be a bril film maker??😕I am sure every film maker has a vision for his movie(Why even RGV must have had a vision for his 'Aag'...😛..)., but even the best of the directors sometimes fumble when rubber meets the road......No doubt Mani Ratnam is a brilliant film maker but he is still a human and hence bound to fail sometimes which unfortunately seems like the case this time around...

@ the underlined sentence:Woow...if nothing, just blame the audience???🤔These are the same audience who respected a 'non-starrer' Prakash Jha movie just 2 weeks ago and made it into a blockbuster....and rejected a 'kites' with Hrithik in it....A good movie is always cherished no matter who's in it.... Any movie maker that becomes self indulgent gets punished by the audience....be it a Mani Rathnam or a SJB or for that matter a Stephen Spielberg....

I for one will not trust any Bollywood movie........crap movies become good hits. good movies become flops. ultimately its ones personal choice......

I mean people flock theatres to see "good looking" stars. Infact many of the box office success are purely based on publicity and star power only. That way I respect the south industry more coz unknown and ordinary daily life people who do not look like a star from any angle act and make a movie a blockbuster.

ofcourse crap movies are made in both industries and they become hits but movies withour starts or even good looking heroes become hits mainly bcoz of the story and performance. I hope that day comes in bollywood where people don't judge to go or not go to see a movie based on its stars......

Vikram struggled for 10 years....he was resorted to doing voice overs for heroes and played 3-4 side roles in malayalam movies until "sethu" happened.

Sethu was made in an non existent budget. many distributors refused to buy the movie, the director bala himself took the pains and released it and the rest is history. People watched the movies purely on word of mouth praise for the movie and its stellar performance. Today both Vikram and director Bala has national award winners.

movies should run coz of its script and performances and not bcoz of stars and " good looking" heroes or heroines

But what about raavan. in the entire movie we will wait how Ash is going to kill Abhishek? I doubt Mani made this movie for the box office. As i doubt this might not be a good role for Abhishek. It's time Abhishek explore more and work with different actresses. Rani, Kareena, Priyanka where he actually shares great chemistry. He do so much more but you need to let the audience know the movie is good by good marketing.

After reading reviews I did sent him a tweet..but I also know he own't reply...
I told him to stop working with his wife.
I also told him not to mix professional and personal life.
I also wrote that he should not sound like his wife either when I read his latest interview with a heading "I am blessed to have a good wife"..I was oh my god she turned him into her..."I am blessed..."blah..
But that is totally different....I love MAni's movies...Thge only one I didn't was Dil Se...I couldnot associated with that movei....

Ok I don't get this but why are people bringing in MNIK into all this?? This is raavan's review thread right?? It should be about Raavan.. Just coz raavan has been rejected by the critics and masses alike why are people name-calling MNIK because they personally didn't like it! I didn't like MNIK that much either, but the fact remains that it was a critical and commercial success and there are many people who liked the flick. And then with the other thing about balming the audience that they don't support good flicks.. I say naaa--aaa-- audience spend their hard earned money on flicks, they have every right to reject or accept whatever they want. Sorry just because some directors get into their heads that they are making cinematically brilliant stuff and get lost in their own world with movie making does not mean audience has to bear with it! Or anyone else for the matter of fact. Its not like critics are loving the movie, they have rejected it too.. so its not like audiences have made the biggest blunder by not watching this movie.. I would say give Junta a break!

Watched it last nite....i dunt think it was as bad as some of the reviews are making it out to be. was DEFINITELY disappointed but i wouldn't call it a disaster...judging it as an independent film without the baggage of expectations, its average.

Things I liked about the movie:

Aishwarya Rai was nice. I dont mean brilliant, i dont mean gr8....just plain nice. She didnt make me cringe during her scenes. Just like in JA, she is understated and elegant....so as long as shes not causing any damage, im fine with her acting... As usual, she amazes me with her beauty. How can a woman in her mid 30's, with a not -that-gr8 body, with no make up on, dressed in the dowdiest of clothes, with bruised skin and reddened eyes look so beautiful???

Vikram: Tough and no-nonsense, he was wonderful as the cop. I wouldnt say i liked his role, or the amount of footage he was given....but absolutely no complaints with him and his acting.

Supporting cast: Nikhil, Govinda, priyanmani and Ravi kissen (suprisingly!!!) impressed me. Their moments were some of the best in the film. I literally cried when priyamani narrates wht was done to her in the police station, to abhishek. It was heartbreaking.

Non Linear Narrative: I think this is the first time i am seeing this in an indian movie...but the non-linear story telling worked for me. It kind of kept the suspense alive coz they would show a random scene first, and then much later on, show the scenes which lead up tht scene. I found it interesting...atleast they didnt spoon feed us with every single detail and take the audience as complete dumbos. A nice attempt.

Starting credits: AWSOMENESS....

Technical details: Photography, costumes and Background music were par excellence. I would go to the length of saying tht it is one of the best shot films in the past few years. The camera work and bgm together make for some really poetic frames in the film and i loved it!!! two thumbs up to the technical department. AMAZING.

Things I didnt like
Abhishek: I am sorry to say this but Abhishek is NOT a good actor according to me. The only performance of his which i liked was KANK...he was natural, crazy and uninhibited in the muvie which made me totally luv him and hate srk. But in all the other "acclaimed" muvies, he was just trying too hard. I appreciate the fact that he is sincere in his attempts but acc to me, acting shld be natural and in abhi's case, its jarringly labored. Didint like him one bit in this muvie. Beera was more like a dope head rather than a passionate, fierce guy. He was more comical than scary. Didn't work for me at all.

Vikram's role: It was such a caricature...as if all cops are deceptive and put work b4 emotions. He was projected the wrong way....I thought Mani would show us the good and grey sides of each character but it seemed to me that he was trying to show Vikram as the villain and abhi as the "good hearted" hero. Vikram was given a raw deal and i was very unhappy with his role and the amount of scope he got.

Screenplay: There were a lot of unnecessary scenes which could have been easily avoided..the long "fight" sequence between ash and abhishek was tiresome and boring. The way they showed ash developing feelings for abhi's character is sudden and not gradual. It was very wishy washy because the scenes were not well connected with each other.
There were a few embarrassing scenes like the polygraph test thingy, the climax and govinda's silly introduction.

Songs: Was disappointed with the picturisation of all of them except maybe khilli re.

All in all - it could have been a gr8 film, but its not. Its average at best. Remove all the amazing technical work done for this film and u would have a clumsily directed, shabby script. A let down by mani ratnam's standards, but watchable if you dunt expect too much from it.

A bad movie is a bad movie.
Audiences are not fools to accept any movie just bcoz a director is famous or a star is famous. People spend there hard earned money and they spend there precious time and all they want is good entertainment. If its not upto the mark the film will definitely tank.
IMO Its not all about looks and packaging and publicity and controversies for the movie to be a success. If that is what is needed then Kites would have been a Blockbuster.
Look at Rajneeti. Agree Katrina was the crowd puller and she was the one who got people thronging to the theatres. But if the film had no substance and no content even Rajneeti would have been a disaster like Kites. Even Kites got a massive opening weekend due to Hrithik's star power. But what happened after that everybody knows.
Anyways I have not watched Raavan. Watching the Hindi one on Saturday and the Tamil one on Sunday. Have a feeling Vikram will be a watchable as Raavan compared to AB. Frrom the promos and the trailers did not like AB making a bufoonery out of the role.
I think Vikram has done justice to the role which needed the intensity and effortless acting which AB lacks.
