Print A+ A-

Cast: Hrithik Roshan, Barbara Mori, Kangna Ranaut
Music: Rajesh Roshan
Director: Anurag Basu
Special:Kites

Without doubt, Hrithik Roshan and Barbara Mori are two of the prettiest people you're going to see on screen.

Hrithik is staggeringly handsome and director Anurag Basu frames him in the tightest of tight close-ups. There is of course the requisite dance sequence and bare torso scene but even in moments of anguish, Hrithik's blue-green eyes are ablaze.

Barbara is lovely with real texture and a feisty spirit. Together they are so luminous that the frame lights up when they are in it. Their crackling chemistry keeps Kites soaring.

Developed by Basu, from a story by Rakesh Roshan who has also produced the film, Kites is about Jai and Natasha, two street-smart hustlers who are marrying into a rich and brutal Las Vegas family purely for the money.

Of course their gold-digging scheme falls apart when they
fall in love with each other. Basu builds this hesitant relationship beautifully.

They can't speak each others language'he doesn't know Spanish and she can't speak English'but their smouldering looks are louder than words.

They know their path is fraught with danger but they can't put the brakes on their desire. Inevitably the bad guys find out and then the chase begins.

Which is pretty much where Kites starts to falter. The weakest link in the film is the villains, who seem like the NRI cousins of the Thakurs from Rakesh Roshan's Karan Arjun.

The entire family is woefully underwritten and badly enacted. At one point, the father, played by Kabir Bedi and the son, played by newcomer Nick Brown, are egging on Jai to kill a man.

They cheerfully say: 'Go get him' and 'You can do it.' As a welcome present into the family, the father hands Jai a new car and a gun. And did I mention that the daughter, whom Jai is pretending to love, is played by Kangna Ranaut, who is of course Bollywood's go-to girl for any mentally unstable character.

The second half of Kites has way too much of the son who chases his fiance and her new lover over stunningly stark new Mexico landscapes.

Meanwhile those two have morphed into Bonnie and Clyde ' they rob banks and steal cars. And the plot settles into a repetitive cycle of chase scene'love-scene'chase scene.

There is one particularly weak shoot-out between cops and bounty hunters, which feels like a left over from B-grade American television and an over- stylised climactic shoot-out in the rain, which echoes Sam Mendes' Road to Perdition.

This is a real shame. Kites is sumptuously produced, painstakingly crafted and in its own way, ambitious. The Roshans and Basu are trying to stretch the boundaries of the Bollywood love story.

Hrithik Roshan is spectacular. And yet the film doesn't become more than the sum of its parts because the second half is flat and in places, outright foolish.

Still I recommend that you see Kites. It's far from brilliant or even fully satisfying but it's easily one of the better Bollywood films I've seen this year.

😆😆😆LOL ---- I always go by her review - she is always balanced and she has a good cinema culture ---😆😆😆😆
I like her honesty and the fact she lets the audience decide to like or dislike the movie......😛😊
It's a pity - Kites could have been a classic - they mess up with the whole chase stuff...
And the interlanguage convo mode might sound a bit unrealistic......

B.O. update: 'Kites' takes fantastic start, but reports negative
- By Taran Adarsh, May 22, 2010 - 07:56 IST
The much-hyped KITES opened to a fantastic response across India on Friday. The film has had a really wide release and with 25 to 30 + shows every day across major plexes, the Day 1 figures will be humungous. However, the reports of the film are extremely mixed, tilting more towards the negative side. Therefore, it will be interesting to see if the film stands firmly from Monday onwards.

The advance bookings and block bookings at various screens will ensure a good Saturday and Sunday, but the real test will begin from Monday onwards for this heavily-priced film.

have seen the movie...

and i can say..my expectations weren't fulfilled...the story was a let down...actually i couldn't understand what anurag wanted to show with it..
he became sandwiched with the 'desi' and the 'classy' thoughts for the movie. he might have feared ht if it keep it truly international the desi janta will keep away and so vice versa.
Barbara Mori is a letdown....a girl should look younger than the hero...here she looks more mature than him...may becoz she is 32.
Her acting wasn;'t impressive either..
abt kangana..its not her fault...its anurag to give her such a mediocre role prior agaisnt her talent...wish she was in place of Barbara.
And HRITHIK .. woo he is amazing...as always...but i thing i need to tell him...tht from now on ... he shouldn't try this stuff...and his accent of english doesn't sound american which i agree with the crtitics...
he is our Bollywood Super Charm and should remain like that...
Music is so thanda man...look at the music of krrish and koi mil gaya, its not even a patch on it...
all an all an ok film can't give more than 3/5.
Can't believe they took so much time to make this.. this bring us to the same fact tht - story is the real hero of the film..
still for hrithik...i want this movie to hit the nail at the box office.....

i think hritik was amazing in the filmmmm and he shud defo do romantic moviess, and he will always stay our hero--he has been offered many hollywood films which he has refused! i think barbara acted excellent! but yeh i do agree that the musci was thanda and the story and screenplay cud've been better, and i dun find anytrhing wrong wid hrithik's accent! he is shown to be an indian at heart so i dun feel he was suppose to sound like a gora!

From the comments above it seems like the youth are liking the film. I suppose the film isn't for the masses, especially in India.
