Review From TOI 😛 Sorry if posted before😛

Trailer
See photo
Story: Hrithik Roshan treads the crooked path in the by-lanes of Las Vegas. He has married umpteen girls for the coveted green card and Barbara Mori happens to be one of his abandoned wives. But sparks fly between the two when they meet again, this time under different -- and dangerous -- circumstances. The mercenary couple are all set to marry a rich brother-sister duo (Kangana and Nick Brown) for their money but they soon discover they are in love and flee the rich and powerful siblings who are hell bent on avenging their dishonour. Will love surmount all odds?

Movie Review: Where's the chemistry? Where's the story? And where's the twist in the tale? Kites could have been that cross-over film that Bollywood has been dreaming about since long. Sadly, it flounders even before it can take off and soar....

So what's holding it down? First and foremost, the film completely lacks a story (oops! it has three people credited for story: Anurag Basu, Akash Khurana, Robin Bhatt) and unfolds as an unabashed chase film. Nothing wrong with that, for we have had a number of road movies that have thrilled and chilled us. But for that, there has always been a twist in the tale to provide an edgy feel to the film. Kites, on the other hand, does have Hrithik and Barbara spending the second half of the film as fugitives on the run, but their journey is so predictable, it fills you with a yawn. If the first half is a non-happening prolonged romance that unfolds in stares, glances, looks followed by some more stares, glances and looks between our protagonists (Hrithik and Barbara) as they try and seek out covert moments of togetherness in the palatial house of their respective bethrotheds (Kangana and Nick), the second half is a hit and run case which sees the fugitives hoping to make out 'neath the shadow of the gun. Both Barbara and Hrithik decide to give up their get-rich-quick plans and opt for penniless love instead, even though they know they will be pursued till the end of the world by the ditched brother-sister duo.

But hey, do they make out? Not really, unless you call Barbara yakking relentlessly in Spanish as sexy or Hrithik stitching up her arm beneath the rocks as romantic. Which brings us to the chemistry bit....Quite unlike the pre-release claims, the Mexican-Indian mix isn't exactly red hot chilli pepper stuff. Their romance hardly sizzles, with Mori spending most of her time flashing toothy grins and Hrithik failing to match up to his hot-hot bonding with Aishwarya Rai in Dhoom 11. Even the waterfall sequence in the jungle ends up as ekdum thanda!

So what works in Kites? It's the look of the film which carries it forward. Director Anurag Basu may have dipped in the emotional quotient of the film but he does create a visual feel and texture that has an international feel to it. The cinematography by Ayananka Bose has a grand texture and creates compelling montages, specially in the rain-drenched climax sequence. Performance-wise, the lead actors are just adequate and do not exactly set the screen ablaze, neither with their emotions nor with their passion. One almost feels sorry for Kangana, a fine actor who is reduced to a speechless accessory that is left to do what Hrithik and Barbara do -- stare, glance, look as the woman scorned -- for the short span that she's on. The audio track by Rajesh Roshan doesn't linger too, because the film mostly has a loud, repetitive background score by Salim-Suleiman interspersed with maybe just one forgettable number.

Watch Kites for its kool looks. But don't expect the popcorn to remain crunchy for long.

A word about:
Performances: Hrithik looks good, acts okay. Barbara looks okay, acts okay. Kangana: just looks. Ain't okay.

Story: Three people behind the story (Anurag Basu, Akash Khurana, Robin Bhatt), and yet nothing happens. Not acceptable.

Dialogue: Funniest dialogue: tum ullu ki patthi ho. Really?

Cinematography: Ayananka Bose captures videsh well. The highpoint of the film is its glossy canvas.

Music: Salim-Suleiman's background score is noisy and mournful in turn, while Rajesh Roshan's songs are easily forgotten.

Styling: Hrithik in traditional Mexican attire? Terrible. Otherwise, he looks uber cool while Barbara in a bikini disappears in a flash...Before the mercury can actually rise!

Kites - Winds on Hrithik's powerful performance
IndiaGlitz [Friday, May 21, 2010]

What is it all about?

The much hyped Hrithik Roshan starrer with a Mexican bala Barbara Mori as his co-star, a decent helmer like Anurag Basu and a reputed banner like Rakesh Roshan's Filmkraft which has given quality entertainers in past turns out as a major disappointment.

'Kites' is an all time low empty luxury vehicle from its producer 'Rakesh Roshan', director 'Anurag Basu', Writer… sorry writers Akash Khurana, Anurag Basu and Robin Bhatt, that pushes the envelope in terms of just how much flashy packaging an audience will buy when there's absolutely nada inside.

The Story……of course

Shot in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Santa Fe, 'Kites' is an unconvincing love story about an Indian man's affair with a Latin woman and their predicament as they don't understand each other's language, 'Kites' is about their misadventure.

The story starts in a harsh terrain of the Mexican desert where a mortally wounded man Jai (Hrtithik) is left to die in the heat of the scorching sun. Once a street smart, carefree young guy, he is now a wanted man.

As death looms, the only thing that keeps him alive is the quest to find the love of his life, Natasha (Barbara Mori) - a woman betrothed to another man. Jay and Natasha fell in love despite language and cultural barriers and embark on a crazy boring trip.

What to look out for?

Hrithik Roshan is sensational and gives his most matured performance till date.

Cinematography by Ayananka Bose is jaw dropping and Anurag's shot taking is commendable.

What Not?

'Kites' cuts its own strings by a weak story, zero chemistry, no melody, no romance, and tries to fly with the winds of hype, good but unconvincing stunts and a sensational Hrithik Roshan who has just missed a great opportunity to introduce himself pleasantly to Hollywood. What a waste.

Anurag's limitations as an helmer and a writer gets exposed with this flick and the movie ensures that Anurag sensibilities are limited to a certain sect where he can please his audience with some videsh influence in films like 'Gangster' and 'Life in a Metro' but when it comes to please the videshis and the desi together, he runs out of ideas and lacks proper understanding of the term called 'mass appeal' and the audience pulse.

Which once again cement the view that shot taking is not film making.

Coming to the film which starts superbly and has an interesting concept of two lovers flying together but heir fate lies in the hands of others and in the end they are denied is spoiled by the makers who in their dream to make this fly high on international skies. The makers commit following blinders:

A) The characterizations is poor and its hard to connect with the two lead pairs Hrithik and Barabara who start loving each other but on what grounds is hard to believe. And its never gets explained in the film what makes them attracted towards each other when they can't understand their language…… Is it lust that brings them together or what?

B) A love story can still survive even if the reason of attraction is not convincing provided the pair oozes on screen chemistry, warmth when they come together…. Alas, the chemistry between the Hrithik and Barbara who are torn between paisa and pyaar is thanda and in minus degree celsius. A blink of your eye and Barbara in bikini is gone.

C) Even if the attraction is not convincing and the pair is not delicious on screen and you are trying to woo the international audience, still some taste can be provided if the music is melodious, song dance, naach gaan is the only identity Bollywood has had to lakhs of cinegoers worldwide and mind you I'm not talking of experts. Even over here the movie scores a zero. Even worse, previously the music director Rajesh Roshan has given his best for this banner. The helmer Anurag Basu previous flicks have scored major plus in music.

D) Even after all this known departments fail and you run out of cards then still you can rely on some quality action to punch your films prospects, which are there but again it doesn't seem to be the way it should be…… I mean not required, its not a chase movie.

E) And finally, the last nail in the coffin is provided by the language…. Sorry languages in the movie, people speak English, Hindi, and Spanish in the film where Spanish spoken by Barbara is subtitled in English whereas the English interaction are not subtitled and audience scratch their heads to recollect where and when was Hindi spoken in this Bollywood film.

The movie has some childish errors which are hard to digest like the editor Akiv Ali turns blind eye to repetitive shots. Kangana is reduced to minimum. A wounded tormented Hrithik on quest for his lost love in Mexican desert doesn't shave but manages to change his clothes. From Mexican attire to jeans…..??, etc, etc. All this make this 130 minutes misadventure numbing and it's more than such a frail conceit can sustain.

Conclusion: 'Good looks can deceive', go at your own risk.

Rating **

ok here it goes:
final word on the film: HRITHIK BRILLIANT, i wish i cud say the same about the film, look the reality is that Hrithik has been in big films in the past 4 years! krrish, dhoom2, JA and then came KITES and that too after 2yrs! and u say r u kidding me?? this movie cud have been amazing but it wasn't it didn't give me the effect, seemed forced, now dun get me wrong the acting was brillant but the screenplay was nottt, the story had good intentions but it did not reach its potential!
the movie starts of well, the dancing by hrithik in fire is amazingggggg👏 the cutest part about the movie was that they were already married!! their chemistry was really good when they go out for a date and he says that wish we never divorce----very cuteee, the song tum bhi ho wahi---very good, the scene where he says u dun like the kissing was also very niceeeeee
minusss-did not feel impacted by the movieeee, that was i guess also because that the audience was soo fidigity and this budha couple cudn't stop talking!! highly annoying! but being a hrithik fan i was expecting more but unfortunately the movie fell short of my expectations!! however it has sum real cute and romantic moments, good thrills, i think i wud've enjoyed it wid a less annoying audience, but yeh it is not a huge film!! i did not carry this movie in my heart when it ended, very mixed, didn't feel ittt, i am pretty sure it is also because of the darn audience!! i really hope i enjoy kites the remixxxx--only 1hr 30mins might be more impactful, lets cccc, and the english audiences r so much more better! afterall the american reviews were amazinggg!!!!!!! i can see this movie being very good if it had a really good screenplay wid a tad better storyline, sumthing in the love story didn't touch me, lol the best moment was when he said 'chal basanti'😆😆
i give this movie 3.5/5
also in the theatre i went the volume was quite low
what to watch out for: hrithik's vulnerability, his acting, his handsomness
do not expect much: from the overall effect, when a person cums out they feel wow this movie had all the potential but it did not reach it! i cn't believe this movie is directed by anurag basu! who directed GANGSTERRR! too much chasing, and forced scenes, i was afraid of that when hrithik said we improvised a lot, i mean cum on???? they didn't have a bound screenplayy

Kites Review – OMG, Utter Garbage

For the first time ever in the U.S., we witnessed and heard the audience loudly jeering a Bollywood film.

This unprecedented incident happened on Thursday evening at the end of the 8PM show of Kites at Anil Ambani's Big Cinemas theater in North Bergen, New Jersey (just outside Lincoln Tunnel) in Screen 2.

To the folks in the last two rows in the middle section of the cinema hall, we feel felt your pain.

Really.

It's hard to believe this nonsense was two years in the making.

Principal Villain – Rakesh Roshan
To those who believe the villain of the film is Tony (Nick Brown), hell no.

The main villain and primary architect of this garbage is Hrithik Roshan's father Rakesh Roshan, who is responsible for the story and production.

If Kites proves anything at all, it's that Rakesh Roshan is completely inept in the story business.

Hey Hrithik, if we were you we wouldn't have jumped off the cliff but we'd have gleefully pushed the bald bozo Rakesh Roshan off the high peak into the sea.

Messy Story
As we had suspected, Rakesh Roshan steals the basic plot of a young man falling for his would-be brother-in-law's girl from Woody Allen's brilliant Match Point.

But that's where the similarities end.

Where Woody Allen skilfully develops the plot through the marriage and the murder and ultimately the hero getting away with murder, the Kites story is a complete mess as it weaves back and forth into the past and present.

The story starts going off the rails the moment we learn Natasha a.k.a. Linda (Barbara Mori) is actually our hero J's (Hrithik Roshan) wife. From that point on, the story plunges into amateurish territory and can never rise up through the dance competition, the love-scenes, the escape into the desert et al. All of it downright amateurish stuff.

Our young Las Vegas-based hustler J's favorite money-spinner is to marry immigrants desperate for a Green Card. And Linda happens to be his 11th bride.

They part after the wedding. They meet again at Bob's palace-like home (not unlike the country estate in Match Point) when Cupid strikes.

Never have we seen a love angle so clumsily executed and totally lacking depth.

Tony (Nick Brown) is the archetypal Bollywood bad guy – loud, crude and violent.

What Rubbish
No, no, no. In Las Vegas, casino owners don't cut off the ears of crooked employees with a plier nor do they shoot them dead or hang them upside down.

Are there no limits to rubbish?

The orgy of violence toward the end in which Hrithik Roshan's character mows down the entire bunch of bad buys was again sheer nonsense.

By the way, the chase on the highway by the police was underwhelming as well. We're tired of seeing cars rolling off trucks on to highways. It was nice the first time we saw it in Bad Boys. Now it's tiresome.

Think of something different, guys.

Mediocre Acting
Neither Hrithik nor the girl Barabara Mori covered themselves with glory.

Will somebody please tell Barbara that flashing your teeth every few seconds and speaking in Spanish is not acting.

Hrithik too was disappointing in some key moments. First, when his friend Robin takes Linda to the hospital and again in the final moments of the film before he takes the big dive. He was plain awful in both scenes and merely passable other times.

There's little chemistry between Hrithik and the Mexican actress Barbara Mori.

None of the songs did anything to lift us out of the disappointing stupor into which we'd succumbed.

Kangana Ranaut and Kabir Bedi hardly have any role to speak of.

Bottom line, Kites came across as no more than a breath of stale air.

Restless Audience
As we said at the outset, the audience clearly seemed unhappy with the movie.

There was continuous chit-chat, particularly during the second half. And no one objected.

Folks, Kites is most definitely not worth your time or money.

If you are desperate to watch a nice flick this weekend, borrow Match Point and see it. You'll thank us.

Show Kites your middle finger with mucho gusto. The stinker deserves no better.
