| THEIR STARDOM IS NOT IN DOUBT, BUT WHAT ABOUT THEIR ACTING ABILITIES? THEY DELIVER HITS BUT DO THEY DELIVER QUALITY? A t2 REPORT CARD ON THE STANDOUT PERFORMANCES BY OUR HEROES. |
Shah Rukh's performance as Rizvan Khan in My Name Is Khan set us thinking. We were sure that it was his best (and so we wrote that in our review). No SRK mannerisms, no Raj or Rahul twitch of the shoulder, no hiccup-happy laugh, this was a studied and refreshingly unaffected performance from King Khan right through the 160 minutes of the Karan Johar film. But if this was his best, what was it better than? Does Shah Rukh Khan really have performances to match his hits, celluloid magic to match his stardom? So, t2 dived into the filmography of King Khan (and that of claimants to his crown) to fish out his bronze, silver and gold roles — 'common man' Mohan Bhargava in Swades; the angsty and passionate Kabir Khan in Chak De! India; the riveting Rizvan Khan in My Name Is Khan.

| This was a tough one and there might be many Aamir fans who won't agree with this pick. But on the basis of that one scene alone, where Daljit crumbles, cries and collapses into the arms of Sue, Rang De Basanti wins our vote as Aamir's best performance. Also, the Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra film featured Aamir Khan the all-rounder like never before — the friend, the prankster, the son, the romantic, the avenger.... Play it again, DJ! | Maybe because he was turning producer with this one or just that he had become Bhuvan, but Aamir was so much 'in the moment' in every shot of Lagaan, it was quite uncanny. | Somehow we remember every line Aakash spoke in Dil Chahta Hai. And while that had a lot to do with Farhan's writing, it was also about how Aamir said them in this path-breaking film. |

| "You can never accuse me of acting!" Salman Khan had told t2. But we must admit there is something about Sallubhai on screen. Take the lovelorn Sameer of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. We all wanted Ash to choose Ajay but we also so wanted Salman to find happiness. That's the charm of the man called Salman Khan. Nowhere is that more evident than in Dus Ka Dum, but since this is a movie meter, we stick to Hum Dil De... | When he limps back into the asylum van in the last shot of Tere Naam, your heart bleeds for Salman and his tragic love story. Action, romance, tragedy... his Radhe rode through (and ruled) it all. | If you ever want to laugh yourself silly, just go to the cliffhanger scene at the climax of No Entry and watch Salman in action. Why waste a punch, if you can deliver hilarious punchlines like this action hero? |
| Hrithik Roshan, arguably our best star actor, has seldom disappointed. But he really made history with this one. In Jodhaa Akbar, Duggu made us want to time-travel and shout 'Azeem-O-Shaan Shahenshah'! Ash could not take his eyes off him. Neither could we. | The true litmus test of Hrithik's acting abilities. From Sanjeev Kumar to Kamal Haasan, the best had already creamed the child-in-a-man act. But Hrithik's Rohit in Koi... Mil Gaya was a boy wonder, from the language to the body language. | Well, Hrithik has to share this medal with his abs but his Aryan act in Dhoom:2 really took the cool quotient of Bolly heroes to another level. And the way he grooved... honestly, no kamina comes close. |
| If one film in recent times has changed the way Bollywood behaves, it is Hera Pheri. If Akshay hadn't rocked the Priyadarshan comedy like he did, he would have still been playing khiladi and we would have missed out on many a fun blockbuster. Paresh Rawal was the funniest and Suniel Shetty the goofiest but with this laughathon Akshay was crowned the king of chaotic comedy. | He had given us a glimpse of his romantic side in Dhadkan, but with Namastey London, the earthiness, the earnestness, the endearment came together perfectly. Ask Kats! | We have always sided with those cheated in love. But in Khakee, Akshay added the dimension of bad-cop-turned-good-cop to it and we ended up rooting for him like never before in this multi-starrer. |
| Flop squeaker Chhote Nawab as an Iago with snake-like menace? Forget it. That's what we thought. Till we watched Saif Ali Khan become Langda Tyagi in Omkara. Under Vishal Bhardwaj's master eye, Saif lived out the role of a lifetime. Remember that tongue-roll in bed with Konkona? Mesmerisingly evil. Saif soon became one of the most formidable star actors in Bollywood. | The film that changed everything for Saifu. As Dil Chahta Hai's Sameer, a fool in love but rock steady in friendship, he floored us all. And how symbolic is that signature step from Woh ladki hai kahaan — DCH gave Saif wings to fly! | What is it about the bad boys that bring the best out of Saif? His Karan in Sriram Raghavan's Ek Hasina Thi is such a smooth operator that Sharmila Tagore picks this as the real turnaround role for son Saif. |
