All this is absolutely disgusting and ridiculous! Whats with the conflicting reports?? some are saying that it is getting a release in Maharashtra and some are sayings its not. The CM has asked people to watch it fearlessly but still SS seems to be making threats across Mumbai and some theater owners are even listenin to SS.. how silly is that..??? Seriously if this movie doesn't get a full release in Mumbai then many questions will be raised regarding the capability of the ruling party in Maharashtra. And all this is kinda sending a wrong signal about Mumbai.. I read a report about how businesses are moving from there because of such inflexible and arrogant behavior by some.. who knowz even bolly might move outta there.. cuaz what are they supposed to do when one of the most anticipated movies of the year gets opposition like this. If it doesnt get a clean release it would be the biggest let down for fans and the industry. :(

Desu if gov was capable of something then this situation wouldn't have gotten this bad. They decided to turn their faces to the conflict in the beginning and now when it is becoming a real threat.. they just are not able to do anything about it. Gov should take a cue from this situation and learn to react and act quickly to such problems before they become big big threats and bother everybody.

OMG ...just read on NDTV tht shiv sena is happy for the "success" because sum multiplexes in Mumbai decided not to screen MNIK!!!! How disgusting could some people get....India just celebrated its 60th republic day but what use is it when democracy dosent exist in the country!!! Secularism is chucked out of the window and people are not entitled to have their opinion, which is a basic human right "freedom of speech". Shiv sena is causing inconvinience to soo many people - srk and the entire team of MNIK, the audience who wants to watch the muvie, multiplexes, FOX, the common man (due to the disgusting violence) just to fuel their bloated egos....and why the hell should srk aplogise? his comments promote humanity and brotherhood amongst people while these bozos are trying to divide and discriminate...Simply gr8...people now need bullet proof jackets and protective gear to watch MNIK, height of Cultural terrorism!!

Will Mumbai cinemas screen SRK's film?

NDTV Correspondent, Thursday February 11, 2010, Mumbai

Hours before his film is released in India, there's uncertainty over whether Mumbai will screen Shah Rukh Khan's My Name Is Khan.

Most cinema-owners in the city say they will make a decision on Friday morning. But for Khan and the film's director, Karan Johar, it's a nail-biting climax in their stand-off with the Shiv Sena which has threatened to prevent the film from screening unless Khan apologises for his remarks on Pakistani cricketers. (Read: SRK tweets "for last time" on Sena controversy)

That's what Mumbai's cinema-owners are urging Khan to do. Last week, the actor stated he would not retract. On Thursday, he tweeted that the Sena's Uddhav and Bal Thackeray had "misconstrued" his remarks. (SRK tweets Thackerays "misconstrued my words")

But cinema-owners want Khan and the Sena to formally declare a truce. The film's distributors, Fox Searchlight, said on Thursday night that the film would release as scheduled on Friday.

"There is a huge demand for My Name Is Khan and we are confirming the news that MNIK will open nationally everywhere on Friday," said Vijay Singh, CEO, Fox Searchlight, distributors of the film.

But on Thursday evening, first it was multiplexes who said they didn't want to risk the wrath of the Sena. Cinemas located in malls were especially worried. Mall-owners made it clear they didn't want shops and other businesses to get caught in potential crossfire between the Sena and the police that has been assigned to guard theatres.

63 cinemas in Mumbai are meant to screen the film. Half of these are multiplexes. Soon, single-screen cinemas said they too were unsure about showing the film. They say the expense of private security, and video cameras to monitor the audiences, as requested by the Mumbai police, may just not be worth it. (Read: Mumbai's multiplexes fortified)

As the crisis expanded, Shah Rukh tweeted, "i have the courage of conviction by my side. i explain becos better to do that, than create aggression & division in my country. ironic & sad. a film made for world peace has led to so much angst in my own house.my city.my country. let not anyone be hurt is all i pray. i have no ego or false sense of pride. my words have been benign & without ill will to any person (s) or my nation."

Chief Minister Ashok Chavan urged all cinemas to "be bold, and we will protect you." Chavan added that he has no interest in promoting the film, but cannot accept threats to law and order. It's sad, he added, that policemen have to be used to deal with the Sena's threats rather than with Naxals or terrorists.

On Wednesday, cinemas closed advance bookings - they said they didn't feel safe from the Sena. Later in the evening, they identified a list of vulnerable cinemas, the police added more security at these theatres, and advance bookings began shortly after that.

The police has arrested close to 1800 Sainiks in preparation for the film's release. The leave of all Mumbai cops has been cancelled so that they can guard cinemas. One-fourth of Mumbai's police force will be devoted to patrolling cinemas. (Read: Mumbai police leave cancelled for SRK's film)

Theatre-owners have been asked to ensure that the first three rows in every theatre are left empty. All ticket-holders will be asked to provide identity cards. No bags will be allowed into any cinemas.

Raj Thackeray won't join sena against SRK

NDTV Correspondent, Thursday February 11, 2010, Mumbai.

While the Shiv Sena's protests and threatens to stop the release of Shah Rukh Khan's new film, Raj Thackeray says he'll steer clear of the Sena's war with Khan.

At a press conference in Mumbai, Raj Thackeray said that his party, the Maharashtra Navrnirman Sena or MNS, will not target the film, which releases in Mumbai on Friday.

His estranged uncle and cousin, Bal and Uddhav Thackeray, have warned that Shiv Sainiks are likely to "spontaneously" attack cinemas showing the film unless Khan apologizes for his statement on Pakistani cricketers.

There is tight security outside Mumbai theatres which are scheduled to show the film. More than a thousand Sainiks have been taken into preventive custody. On Wednesday, nervous cinemas stopped advance sales of tickets for the film. Once the police added more security to cinemas identified as vulnerable by theatre-owners, advance bookings re-opened. (Read & Watch: Mumbai ready to snub Shiv Sena?)

The movie, directed by Karan Johar, has become the target of the Sena-SRK face-off. Khan has repeatedly said he will not apologize for his comments.

After the film's premiere in Dubai on Wednesday night, Karan Johar tweeted, "Crisis can truly be an eye opener...you know who stand tall with you and realise those who don't...so much I have learnt today...miss my dad."

Last year, under similar pressure, Karan Johar was forced to apologize to Raj Thackeray whose party objected to Mumbai being called 'Bombay in Johar's film, Wake Up, Sid.

That was different, says Thackeray, because the incorrect reference was made within the film. Shah Rukh's comments were not a part of the movie and therefore the movie should not be targeted, added Thackeray.

Mumbai ready to snub Shiv Sena?

NDTV Correspondent, Thursday February 11, 2010, Mumbai

My Name is Khan had a glittering premiere in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday night but the big test is the film's release in Mumbai on Friday where the police are gearing up for any possible trouble the Shiv Sena might attempt. (Read & Watch: My Name Is Khan's premire in Abu Dhabi)

After Shah Rukh Khan's face off with the Thakerays, advance bookings restarted on Wedesday, after they were stopped for a while by theatre owners. (Read: Nervous cinemas start selling tickets for SRK's film)

Over 1500 Shiv Sainiks have been arrested so far and all cops have a list of security measures to be taken at all theatres screening the film.

The Shiv Sena, which has threatened to attack cinemas showing the film unless Shah Rukh apologizes for his comments on Pakistani cricketers, continues to be belligerent. Shah Rukh has angered Sainiks, standing by his statements on his return to Mumbai. (Read and watch: SRK's interview to NDTV)

The Sena is also clearly boosted by Sharad Pawar's meeting with Bal Thackeray, where he sought the Sena Chief's approval for Pakistanis and Australians playing the IPL - just two days after Rahul Gandhi's drubbing response to the Sena. (Read & Watch: Pawar meets Thackeray for cricket, snubs Congress)

The party sees the tussle as a prestige issue, and has challenged the Government to withdraw all security to its leaders. "I asked my security to be withdrawn last night itself," said Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday.

"We don't see this as a challenge. It is a law and order problem we will deal with it accordingly." Chief Minister Ashok Chavan retorted.

The Sena's diktat apart, Mumbai seems ready to welcome the film. "I'll surely go to watch MNIK because I don't think SRK has done anything that should make people stay away from the movie," said a fan. "We live in a democracy. Nobody should obstruct people from going for a movie," said another.
