Shiv Sena's rebuke: SRK should go to Karachi

Last updated on: January 29, 2010 14:25 IST

Shiv Sena [ Images ] on Friday attacked Bollywood super star Shah Rukh Khan [ Images ] for raising concern about the exclusion of Pakistani players from the Indian Premier League [ Images ] and dared him to take the players in his team Kolkata Knight Riders [ Images ].

"If Shah Rukh wants Pakistani players to play here, he should go to Karachi and Islamabad [ Images ] to play with them...If he includes Pakistani players in his team, he should be aware of the consequences," Sena spokesperson Sanjay Raut told mediapersons in Mumbai [ Images ].

Reacting to the non-selection of Pakistani players in the IPL auction, Bollywood star and co-owner of Kolkata Knight Riders Shah Rukh Khan had recently said that they (Pakistani players) should have been welcomed.

"I truly believe they (Pakistan players) should have been chosen," Khan had said.

"We would have loved to have Pakistani players if they were made available legally," he had said.

Meanwhile, protesting the actor's comment, Sena activists tore posters of SRK's [ Images ] upcoming movie 'My Name Is Khan' at the Eternity Mall premises in neighbouring Thane.

The activists handed over a letter to the owner of the mall asking to stop release of the movie.

IPL row: Aamir Khan backs SRK on Shiv Sena issue

Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan may be business rivals in Bollywood. But when it comes to social concerns and sensitive issues, they have often come together to lend support to each other. Aamir has once again backed Shah Rukh Khan in his stance for welcoming Pakistani players at IPL, which has won the ire of political party Shiv Sena.

Shahrukh Khan supporting the cause of the Pakistani players in the IPL hasn't gone down well with Shiv Sena. The party has slammed Shahrukh over his kind-heartedness towards the Pakistani cricketers. Shiv Sena spokesman Sanjay Raut said "This is not Shahrukh, but the Khan in him that's saying all this. Let Shahrukh go and stay in Lahore, Karachi or Islamabad. He is not needed in Mumbai. Balasaheb has made it clear that Pakistani players wouldn't be allowed to play in the IPL or set foot in Maharashtra."

Raut almost threatened Shahrukh by saying, "There will be dire consequences if Shahrukh defies the orders of the Sena chief. Shahrukh must think twice before speaking. This is Maharashtra and the Shiv Sena chief's writ runs here,"

Shah Rukh Khan, who owns the Kolkata Knight Riders team, had said that IPL could have handled the controversy over franchisees not selecting Pakistani cricketers at an auction in a "nicer manner".

"I believe my country stands for democracy, goodness and welcome-ness. We should open our arms to everyone and I think we should have a little more leeway in involving people from all over the world to come and showcase their talent," Shahrukh had said.

Reacting to the controversy kicked off after his remakes, Shahrukh posted on twitter, "Don't answer IPL questions because people look at the wrong end of the answers."
Shah Rukh ignored the Sena's attack and chose not to comment. "The more I talk about this, the more it is used for making bytes. To be respectful to myself and how I feel about the need for goodness between all nations, I would refrain from commenting," he said.

Thackeray slams Ambani over 'Mumbai-for-all' remark

January 29, 2010 12:11 IST

Shiv Sena [ Images ] chief Bal Thackeray [ Images ] has attacked industrialist Mukesh Ambani [ Images ] over his recent statement that Mumbai [ Images ] belongs to all Indians. "Marathi people have as much right over Mumbai as Mukesh Ambani has over the Reliance companies," Thackeray said in an article published in Sena mouthpiece Saamna.

"Mumbai is Maharashtra's [ Images ] capital and will remain its capital. Don't meddle in the path of Mumbai and Marathi manoos," he said. Thackeray said, "when 'Pandit Mukesh Ambani' says Mumbai, Chennai and Delhi [ Images ] belong to all Indians, why has he left out cities likes Ahmedabad [ Images ], Jamnagar and Rajkot".

Reliance Industries [ Get Quote ] Chairman Mukesh Ambani had recently said the controversy over making knowledge of Marathi mandatory for issuing taxi permits in Mumbai was 'unfortunate' and the metropolis belongs to all Indians. "We are all Indians first. Mumbai, Chennai and Delhi belong to all Indians. That is the reality," he had said during a panel discussion at the London [ Images ] School of Economics.

The Sena chief asserted that the Marathi manoos has the same right over Mumbai as enjoyed by Mukesh Ambani over the Reliance companies. "The only difference is that he has business rights and for Maharashtrians, it symbolises their pride," Thackeray said. "Uptil now I considered Mukesh Ambani a true Mumbaikar. His father and my friend, the late Dhirubhai was loyal to Mumbai. The Ambanis could spread their industrial empire because of Mumbai and Maharashtra. Dhirubhai had always acknowledged his indebtedness to Maharashtra. Then why Mukesh has chosen a different path?" he asked.

The Sena patriarch also warned the industrialist to do his business without provoking Maharashtrians. He said, "of late many prominent personalities are vying with each other to proclaim that Mumbai belongs to all for their own selfish considerations and such utterances have become tantamount to advocating national integration. In doing so, nobody is showing sensitivity to the feelings of Maharashtrians to whom Mumbai belongs."

In November, the Sena chief had asked cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar not to "dabble" in politics. "He should stick to the cricket wicket and not meddle with the pitch of politics. The right to decide who comes to Mumbai is our right, not his," the Sena chief had said. Thackeray had criticised Tendulkar for his 'Mumbai-for-all' remark, saying there was no need for the cricket icon to take a "cheeky single" and "hurt" the Marathi psyche by moving to the pitch of politics. "By making these remarks, you have got run-out on the pitch of Marathi psyche. You were not even born when the 'Marathi Manoos' got Mumbai and 105 Marathi people sacrificed their lives to get Mumbai," he said.Thackeray had expressed displeasure that Sachin "left the crease" and moved to the pitch of politics by making these remarks.

After SRK, Big B bats for Pakistani cricketers

Friday, January 29, 2010, 10:23 [IST]

By: Subhadeep Bhattacharjee

First it was Shahrukh Khan and now Amitabh Bachchan has become the latest Bollywood stars to come in support of Pakistani players for the Indian Premier League. Bachchan who was a Guest Editor at CNN-IBN to promote his latest movie Rann said "At some stages, it does look disappointing. For many people who admire cricket and since, there are so many good players in Pakistan, this should not have happened,"

Buzz up!

Bachchan also said "But then there is this whole business of this (IPL) being a business and being privately run, politics of the nation, which is on a large scale, is brought into this and I think that is not valid," He also added "I am myself involved in a campaign that talks about Aman ki asha (hope for peace) where we are trying to exchange people from both the countries, weather it's in the field of creativity or sports or journalism where we have debates and talk to people," remarked the senior actor.

Shahrukh who also owns the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL was the first Bollywood celebrity come out in support of Pakistani cricketers and had said "They are the champions, they are wonderful but somewhere down the line there is an issue and we can't deny it. We are known to invite everyone. We should have. If there were any issues, they should have been put on board earlier. Everything can happen respectfully,"

Nationality of a cricketer doesn't matter: Aamir Khan

New Delhi: Sympathies continued to pour in for Pakistani cricketers snubbed by the Indian Premier League franchises with Bollywood actor Aamir Khan saying that he would have included a good player in his team irrespective of his nationality.

"National boundaries are man-made. If someone is a good cricketer, then I would want him in my team. I don't care which country he belongs to," Aamir said.

"Sometime cricket brings us together and sometimes we fight each other even more. When we fight I feel it is silly. At the end of the day, it is a game and we should enjoy it as a game," he said.

None of the 11 Pakistani players found a buyer at the auction leading to an outrage across the border.

Players said they felt humiliated at being ignored and they found support from Indian sports minister M S Gill and home minister P Chidambaram.

The IPL franchises have, however, maintained that the availability of the players was the sole criteria for rejecting them at the auction.

Shiv Sena trains guns on SRK, Mukesh Ambani

The Shiv Sena on Friday added Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani and actor Shah Rukh Khan to its long list of targets.
Ambani's fault: During a panel discussion at the London School of Economics on Tuesday, he said making Marathi mandatory for Mumbai taxi drivers was "unfortunate", as "we are all Indians first. Mumbai, Chennai and Delhi belong to all Indians".
Khan's fault: On the controversy over Pakistani cricketers not being selected to play in the Indian Premier League, he said they should be allowed in India. Khan co-owns Kolkata Knight Riders, an IPL team.
The Sena's take: In a front-page article in mouthpiece Saamna, party chief Balasaheb Thackeray said: "You (Ambani) are welcome to carry on business, but don't meddle with Mumbai and the Marathi manoos."
He asked: "When 'Pandit Mukesh Ambani' says Mumbai, Chennai and Delhi belong to all Indians, why has he left out cities likes Ahmedabad, Jamnagar and Rajkot?"
This was an oblique reference to Mukesh's father, Reliance Group founder Dhirubhai Ambani's origin in Gujarat.
Khan, however, received a harsher treatment. On Friday, Sena activists tore the posters of Khan's new release, My Name is Khan, in Thane and ordered the theatre-owner not to screen the film.
The Sena earlier announced that it would disrupt IPL matches if Pakistani players were allowed to participate.
Sena spokesman and MP Sanjay Raut said: "He (Khan) should sell off his bungalow in Bandra and go to Karachi or Islamabad to play with them. If he includes Pakistani players in his team, he should watch out for the consequences."
But Minister of State for Home Ramesh Bagwe assured Khan of police protection. "Also, all players from Pakistan will be given full security."
In the last assembly elections in October 2009, the Sena lost a lot of ground to the Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena. And with the civic polls due in February 2012, the Sena's top priority is to retain power in the civic bodies of Mumbai and Thane.
