Massive support for Shah Rukh after Sena attack

Colleagues, politicians, fans are with him

From the film fraternity, his fans to artists and political parties - Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan is drawing mass support in the wake of the Shiv Sena's verbal assault on him for favouring Pakistani players' inclusion in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The Shiv Sena has sent feelers to Mumbai cinema halls to boycott the actor's forthcoming film "My Name Is Khan", which releases on Feb 12. Sena workers have removed the film posters from several theatres.

Shah Rukh's colleagues are expressing their support for him on micro-blogging website Twitter.

"Shah Rukh is the most secular and the most fair guy I know! It's unfair to judge his movie based on his opinions! I do love Karan Johar and Shah Rukh! Both are very dear to me and I will defend them if someone writes nonsense about them," film star Preity Zinta tweeted.

Added Anupam Kher: "Mr P. Chidambaram was displeased too for not including Pak (istani) players in IPL. No outcry about it. May be (because) he is the Home Minister. You need guts to go for him (sic)."

Others who have joined the online forum include directors Mahesh Bhatt and Anubhav Sinha. Veterans like Shabana Azmi and Shyam Benegal have also rallied in support for the actor on national television.

"The state must step into this immediately. The state has enough power. Why is the state not doing anything?" said Benegal.

Aamir Khan also said that if he were to select IPL players, he would do so only on the basis of their performance and not nationality.

Shah Rukh, who owns the Kolkata Knight Riders team of IPL, had spoken against the exclusion of Pakistani cricketers from the forthcoming tournament. The Shiv Sena said if Shah Rukh failed to apologise for his statement not only would his "My Name Is Khan" be banned, but all his films could face a ban in Mumbai.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has come out in open support of the star.

The artists' community on Feb 4 also extended strong support to the Bollywood superstar.

A statement by the Safdar Hashmi Memorial Trust (SAHMAT)- an umbrella organisation of artists - said: "We, the community of artists, actors, musicians and cultural artists are in full solidarity with the clear stand taken by Shah Rukh Khan in facing the recent threats against him by the Shiv Sena.

"We salute the courage of Shah Rukh Khan in standing up to these threats and want him to know that the entire creative arts community stands by him," said the statement, signed by well-known theatre personality M.K. Raina, artist and photojournalist Ram Rahman, artist Vivan Sundaram, designer and filmmaker Parthiv Shah and author Indira Chandrasekhar.

The Internet has also seen a flood of communities for the actor like "Support Shah Rukh Khan, Support India" and "We support Shah Rukh Khan and 'My Name Is Khan'" on social networking website Facebook.

"Shiv Sena and MNS are treating Maharashtrians as slaves... They are targeting Shah Rukh because he is a Khan. They never protested against L.K. Advani when he praised (Muhammad Ali) Jinnah," Shakeel Shaikh posted on Facebook.

"The Sena can be pacified if Karan Johar and Shah Rukh change the name of their film from 'My Name Is Khan' to "My Name Is Khan (vilkar)'," posts Mumbai-based xylo26 on Orkut.

Student and fans of Shah Rukh are not happy with the situation.

"India is a democratic country and everyone has the freedom to express his views. If Shah Rukh Khan feels that the Pakistani players should be included in IPL, it is singularly his opinion and one should respect it. Political parties like Shiv Sena are free to disagree with it but they are nobody to judge what's right or wrong," Poulomi Nath, a Delhi University (DU) student, told IANS.

Added Asif Ali Ansari, another DU student: "Cricket is a game irrespective of cast, colour, creed or religion and politics should not come in it. Shah Rukh Khan is right when he said Pakistan should play in the third session of IPL. How can they (Shiv Sena) make a ruckus out of it?"

^Yay for that poll! LOVE the media and fan support pouring in for SRK. And a few celebs who've spoken out to the media like Amir, Bipasha, etc.

Eff the other so-called friends. Atleast now SRK knows who his real friends are.

Aamir khan the first celebrity who stood up for Srk and i am so glad he did it. It shows even with their business rivalry they both are good friends. But Saif? I thought they were good friends, what about Preity and Rani? Or they're not his friends anymore? Aziz mirza or any other director aren't coming up in front of media. Why? Are they so scared of SS, tomorrow it could be their turn on movies or even personal lives. How will they protect themselves?

I am as outraged as the next person when it comes to the SS's Nazi like tactics and trying to stop SRK from excercising his fundamental rights. And yes Amitabh Bachan is an idiot who has lost my respect. However, no one in the industry comes out in support of each other. I did not see anyone come out in support of Aamir or Jaya Bachan, either in person or in blogs. Why such an outrage now? Just because it is SRK. Even KRK was troubled by the SS/MNS. No one spoke on his behalf. SO why the outrage now? Fact is the industry is a bunch of selfish cowards. Period!

Ok this is Shocking😕
Bollywood should join hands to support SRK: Amar S
New Delhi, Feb 4 (PTI) Expelled SP leader Amar Singh today said that in the wake of the Shah Rukh Khan-bashing by Shiv Sena, Bollywood should throw its weight behind the superstar.
Singh said Bollywood should join hands whenever one of its members faces such a situation.
"No one uttered a word when Aamir Khan was targetted for his stand on the Narmada dam. Amitabh Bachchan got no support when his name was dragged in the Bofors (scam). When Bal Thackerey targetted Jaya Bachchan, she was not extended support," he told reporters.
According to Singh, the Maharashtra government should intervene to ensure that "those living in Mannat (Shah Rukh's house) and people from north India feel secure."
He, however, said that though incidents like these made news, the plight of the common man facing similar situation often goes unreported.
Did Jaya and Aamir apologized when they were targetted?

Release of 'My Name is Khan' won't be affected: Maharashtra top cop

NDTV Correspondent, Thursday February 4, 2010, Mumbai

Finally the Director General of Police (DGP), Maharashtra, A N Roy has broken his silence on the Sena-SRK row. AN Roy on Thursday assured that the release of 'My Name Is Khan' won't be affected.

The Director General of Police has assured complete security to the screening of the movie at all theatres across the state.

Earlier on Thursday, BJP leader Shaina NC, along with representatives of Fox Star Studios, met Roy seeking protection for actor Shah Rukh Khan's upcoming film 'My Name Is Khan' in the backdrop of Shiv Sena's threat to disrupt its screening.

Fox Star Studios is the distributor of the actor's movie 'My Name Is Khan', scheduled to be released on February 12.

"He (Roy) said full protection would be given to theatres and there would not be any disruption during the movie's screening at any theatre in the state," Fox Star Studios India CEO, Vijay Singh said.

BJP spokesperson Shaina NC, who accompanied the team, said director Karan Johan and Shah Rukh were her good friends and she came here in their support.

"If there are any issues, they can be sorted out through a dialogue. Violence cannot be a solution," she said.

Shiv Sena has came down heavily on Shah Rukh Khan, the co-owner of Kolkata Knight Riders, an IPL franchise, after he favoured inclusion of Pakistani cricketers for the tournament's third season.

Angered over his comments, Sena has threatened theatre owners to stall the movie's screening and demanded an apology from him. (With PTI inputs)

@Zareena: Aamir did not. His movie Fanaa was banned in Gujrat. Despite that it was a HUGE hit. The coward Amitabh Bachan apologized on behalf of his wife. and no one not one other person from the industry supported these two. At least SRK has other people tweeting about it. Aamir and Jaya Bachan fought their battle alone
