I agree with a lot of the reasons said before.
One of them being the timing. Firstly its very close to the 11/26 issue; I don't know how it will be in India, but rest assured that if someone had released a film on terrorism on the week of the 1st anniversary of 9/11, it would not have had good feedback in the US. Secondly would be the Eid angle. Maybe not affecting this past weekend, but certainly next weekend Kurbaan will not be helped by Eid. Which person on Eid will choose to go watch a movie about terrorism that will remind them of how they themselves are constantly and wrongly associated with extremists/terrorists? Even if someone doesn't take it that seriously, I think a general sentiment will be that on such a happy occasion nobody wants to watch a such a serious movie. Will people want to watch a happy, family-friendly comedy (DDD), even if it is loud and mindless? YES!
The family-friendliness was also a big part of it. By advertising "steamy" scenes they lost half of their audience, elders and children. I haven't seen Kurbaan yet, but I don't think that it can be nearly as vulgar/crude as KI was. Yet movies like KI don't advertise those things and thus don't turn the audiences away.
Lastly, I feel like Kurbaan has no novelty. Many people were probably asking themselves, well what's new in this? Innocent bechari falls in love with terrorist? Fanaa. Terrorists plotting to take revenge on the big bad USA? New York. Most would feel like they have a majority the story right there. The "Kurbaan" part? Well, it means that someone will be sacrificed, so we just have to guess who the bakra is.
Kurbaan would have probably been better received if it had released before Fanaa in some movie dry spell and omitted the "steamy" scenes from the promos.

yup people are tired of watching terriorism based movies, if MNIK is publicized like this, then nothing can stop it from being a flop
and also the star cast , movie with such strong issue need some star power. Kareena has some but saif or vivek are not any crowd puller. If Hrithik, Amir or SRK were the main lead then movie would have had some spark and chance at BO.

I think it is kind of glib to blame it all on the promos for the poor showing of Kurbaan. It could explain the slow first day but if people genuinely liked it, the movie would have picked up by the end of the weekend. Lots of movies with little or no publicity rake in the moolah simply by word of mouth. A low-budget, sketchily-marketed movie like like Raaz turmed out to be the biggest hit of 2007. So, if the movie failed to pick up even after such glowing reviews and no competing big-budget movies at the theaters, the problem must be somewhere else.
Many people are blaming the people's weariness of the terrorism plot in Bollywood. But, I think it could also be that people are not interested in watching Saif-Kareena together onscreen. Their's is the most publicized and reported romance in Bollywood. You can pick up any magazine or turn on entertainment news on TV to watch a blow-by-blow account of their burgeoning love. Why would someone pay hard-earned cash tp watch them romance on screen when they are faced with it everywhere they turn? I think the fact that the movie garnered no interest in public is mainly due to the casting of Saif-KAreena as a couple and hard-core promotion of their so-called love-making on screen. People are not that voyeuristic.

I hope MNK is promoted as a film that deals with autism and not terrorism.

LOL interesting article.....well I personally didn't watch the movie and have no intention of doing so either since the promos never made the movie appealing enough in my eyes....the over emphasis on the kissing and lovemaking scenes in the promos was enough to give me an idea of why the producers had to dwell on those things to sell this movie....only cuz they had no real substance to the actual plot and characters to sell it on otherwise.....and I also recall reading some reviews about how they tried to sell this movie as a 'serious' and 'intelligent' movie about terrorism issues.....LOLL....well that will surely backfire if you have no credible plot or proper characterizations to speak of.

Bollywood should give terrorism themed films a rest since they don't seem to be able to handle the subject with the intelligent maturity it requires.

i m sorry but kareena-saif pair itself is not captivating..no offence to the jodi fans but its clear people dont find the spark like kareena's pair with hrithik, shahrukh made waves and now even with aamir khan she is riding high but with saif on screen there seems to be missing, now with kurbaan there lies three flops of this couple, first was LOC kargil second tashan and third kurbaan even omkara in which they didnt start together wasn't a bo success but they were praised for their roles.
See Imtiaz was right, he knew to cast kareena with saif comes with something missing, thts why he went for deepika. anyways thts my POV

I have noticed that whenever Kareena pairs up with her official bfs or unofficial crush (Hritik) --- the movie bombs each time or so...Why is that?
Except for JWM but they parted during the filming of the movie.
Her jodi with SRK in Ashoka was really good but the movie wasn't a success at the B.O.....Her dance in Don was🤢 no chemistry no sparks only a bad souvenir from "Poo"....

Well obviously, ppl wont see a spart unless they SEE THE MOVIE. What do ppl remember kareena and saif in from last time? Tashan? Plz dont make me post all the praise the couple has gotten in the movie FROM PPL WHO WATCHED IT.
And I'd MUCH rather trust those ppl than ppl who are just sitting without even bothering to watch the movie and passing judgment.
Just as ppl had said Shahid and Kareena had no chemsitry, they all suddenly changed their minds after JWM. What was that? Where were the ppl who used ot call them the THANDA couple? I remember the EXACT same judgment passed on their couple as well. They're boring, thanda, have no spark.
And suddenly JWM, oh one of the best couples, oh so sad, they were so cute together, oh they are perfect onscreen, oh wanna see them togethr again.
LOL
Give me a break.
I can find critics reviews praising the chemistry as well as member reviews. But in order to do that, I'll have to go through so many reviews in bollywoodhungama's user review section as well as other forums. And I'm too lazy to do that. but i'll direct you to it.
Filimfiantcs member reviews, as well as bollyspice said the same. You can check those out, or the bollywoodhungama user reviews. Or the kurbaan fb group where countless ppl are raving about their chemistry. But then again, those are ppl that have actually seen the movie.

Here, just check em out for yourself.
There are so many factors, as highlighted by this article. Lets try adn avoid pointing fingers at the starcast. And even if their COUPLE is not saleable, why are ppl forgettting that saif and kareena are still HUGE STARS individually. Kareena is big, so is Saif. So I dont really understand why individually ppl would go watch theri movie, but togehter ppl suddenly lose interest in the individual stars as well?
For me here are the factors that backfried against he movie:
1) A certificate COUPLED with teh intimacy flaunted in the promo
Even in UK its given a 15 rating.
2) The stale theme already had ppl skeptical
And also, I have a feeling that a lot of muslims are skeptical about the whoel islami terrorist angle in the movie.

LOL if internet is the only reason to make judgements then i find it silly coz media consists of newspapers, tv channels too where i myself watched nd read the ppl thrashing the movie coming out of the theatres now i don't know why they did tht, they clearly said tht they didn't like the concept, may be they were not ready to see such hard hitting movie they even said the couple didn;t have much spark so u should go ask them why did they say tht, and one more thing i never said they were not praised for their roles, they were but individually, ppl could hardly see a pair in kurbaan, and btw i have seen the movie yesterday and i quite agree with ppl but kareena has done well, reminded me of her performance in DEV
and kareena with shahid...no its already a thanda pair, just becoz JMW did well ppl think the couple had chemistry buh.
