To be really honest, I am surprised it didn't do well because to me it looked like a sure shot success with a dream cast, nice subject (director who wrote dialogues of one of my favorite movies--RDB), Dharma stamp which usually means entertaining.

Things I think went wrong:

1. Definately promotions--not only did they publicize the sex scenes too much and completely turn away family audiences, but also in the beginning with the first few promos, let's face it, it seemed like a total rip off of Fanaa, and New York--nobody want to watch copies when theres an original(well thats ironical, but thats not the point)

2. Release date: way too close to the firstanniversary of 26/11. Also, please correct me if I am wrong, but I believe Eid was over the weekend, or really close to the weekend as well (Sorry if I am wrong, I am not Muslim, so am not completely sure). So during this festive time, nobody wants to watch serious terrorism movies. Audiences will wait till next week for DDD.

3. Audiences are sick of terrorism movies--it is not novel anymore. Lately the story has been the same: Big Bad US did something to me and my family so I will now take revenge and wipe out their busiest city. BORING--seen it too many times. Also, these kinds of movies(don't know for sure about Kurbaan) in a way, indirectly, try to get us to sympathize with terrorists. How does why/how the people became terrorists make any difference--the outcome is still the same-they are terrorists! They just stooped down to the level or even lower than the very same people who are "responsible" for them becoming terrorists. Now a movie about that is something we're willing to see.

You said,. It's way to close to 26/11 and people just are tired, and I don;'t know if Kurbaan tried to display it or what, most of the terrorist flicks say one thing.. It's okay what the terrorists did.. It;s more a sympathy movie on the terrorists rather anything else.

New York was different. New York talked about the mental trauma that those that went through. It didn't exactly say, Terrorism is great, let's sympthazie with it.

I am waiting for DDD. It's gonna have a big opening since it comes after 26/11 annivesary so people wanna see a comedy movie to get their mind off stuff.

I didn't watch kurbaan, but I agree with some of the points above. Why promote the love making scenes so much? if they think sex sells, well they have been proven wrong on this. as chocolover mentioned all most muslims are celebrating eid on friday, so why would we wanna watch such a depressing film that has to with terrorism? I will probably buy the DVD, though I cannot watch it with my mom because it would be soo awkward and uncomfortable during the sex scenes. I wish you could watch these kinds of movies with the whole family but I guess thats not possible with kurbaan.

"K" was not the reason Kjo's films worked so far.The film was earlier called Jehaad, which Saif felt was the right title.
Nudity and promiseof lot of sex will not sell a film.Thank God for that!

I agree with the points made by chocolover89. I haven't seen the film though. Kurbaan's publicity campaign was all wrong. Judging by the reviews, Saif and Kareena's love story is not majorly important which was highlighted in the promos. It seemed like the audience would see a lot of them which they didn't. So expectations didn't meet. I think, in my opinion Saif and Kareena's scenes were showed more so people could see they had chemistry. They have been criticized that they don't have chemistry. Kurbaan proved they did and it was obvious by the promos but the actual story was neglected. When a film is hyped up, people have their expectations high and expect what they have been told or even better. But they are in a for a shock that what they thought, didn't even happen in the film.

Word of mouth also spreads very quickly. 26/11 is approaching. Like it was said earlier, this is the wrong timing. Nobody wants those memories to be revived. In fact this is a time when people want to feel better and see something entertaining. De Dana Dan is perfect for families. No matter how bad the comedy is, whether it's slapstick or not, it will be entertaining and it is guaranteed to have a big opening. After all, it's been directed by Priyadarshan.
I talk about myself here. When the initial trailer aired, my parents and I were interested in the film. Eventually the intimate scenes began to take over most of the promos. This is when my family's interest started to die down. I still feel embarassed when I see the intimate promos, especially with my family around. My dad said that he would have taken us to see the film but he doesn't want a film with a whole load of intimate scenes. He knew that I would be uncomfortable along with my family. So we cancelled the plan. It looks like that it's not just my family but many others out there.

I think the terrorism theme is kurbaan's biggest setback. But its a well made movie, and I hope that its rewarded, slowly but surely.
Someone on another forum said kurbaan is above box office.
I hope that it still gest all the praise! ANd its doing well with feedback. Like rensil said, you cant please everyone

Eid is on the coming weekend. And yeah, as much as I dislike Akki's movies, I'm guessing DDD will open great because of Eid celebrations.

And yes, promotions were a huge drawback. My dad kind of wanted to watch the movie (he has no clue about the sex scenes) but I had to say no to him because I can't sit with my dad and watch bare backs.
