Movie Review: Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab KahaniIf you think Rajkumar Santoshi is the director of so-serious-movies like Ghayal, Damini, China Gate, Pukar, Lajja, Legend of Bhagat Singh and Khakee, you are missing something. He's the man who gave us Andaz Apna Apna. And now he's there with Ajab Prem ki Ghajab Kahani.
OK. Frankly, Andaz Apna Apna is a classic and nobody, I repeat, nobody can make it again. So let's see APKGK from a new frame.
First things first. All good movies don't need things like mind and reasoning. APKGK is one of those movies.
The movie starts on a light note with Ranbir Kapoor, or Prem, the President of Happy Club, doing nothing but running his club whose aim is to make its members more happy. And yes, to make lovers meet. Ranbir meets Katrina during such a 'mission' and while he falls in love at first sight, she falls in hate. Then the misunderstandings end and they meet. And then misunderstandings come again. And then they meet again. In the process, you get to see some light-hearted comedy with some Rajnikantish moves by Ranbir and you also get to hear some wonderful music.
At the end of first half the movie gets a bit serious for some time, at least for the interval, but then Rajkumar Santoshi brings in a mini-climax and you can see everyone running while Ranbir flees with Katrina, to bring her to Upen Patel who is her lover. They both go in a happily ever after mode but then Katrina comes back to Ranbir, even though not realizing Ranbir's love for her. Then politics, family, and lot of comedy come in and finally the movie comes to a huge climax with everyone running in all directions. The good part is that the comedy here is better than we have seen in most of Priyadarshan's movies, or at least enhanced in some ways. With this climax, Katrina is freed from 'Don' and Upen Patel's marriage with Katrina is almost done. I'll leave the story here. All I can say is, at the very end, unnecessarily, but not badly, Rajkumar Santoshi does a little Chetan Bhagat too.
The movie, to a large extent, belongs to Ranbir again, even though it's continuously second time his father throws him out of home in a movie. In the first half it seems like Santoshi has used all his potential, but in the second half, in some parts it seems like he has a lot more potential.
Among others, Katrina is good and has done more than just smiling in the movie. Upen Patel is more than just a guest appearance. Seems like he's negotiated for the title in exchange for a bigger, better role in the movie. Darshan Jariwala is good as ever. In fact he's better than ever in comedy scenes, at least in Hindi films. Smita Jaykar is good again, but Govind Namdeo hasn't got a role good enough for his skills. Navneet Nishan is hardly there. Happy Club is fine. Sajid Don has got dialogs that make you laugh. If you want, you can also search for the Hindi teacher of Taare Zameen Par in the movie for yourself.
Also, music plays a big role in keeping the movie up and running. In fact if there is anybody other than Ranbir to whom this movie belongs, it's Atif's wonderful voice and Pritam's music. The guy who sings shining in the shade in sun (uncredited, probably Neeraj Shridhar) sounds superb too, even for those few words. And yes, the best song of the movie, Tu Jaane Na has been picturised beautifully. Superb cinematography there. Santoshi has mixed comedy and emotions really well. In many scenes there are sudden jumps from comedy to romance and vice versa which have been handled wonderfully.
Overall the movie is good and likable. Even if you go with your mind working, things sometimes get so interesting that you do not mind their silliness, something like Tom and Jerry. The only bad thing about the movie is that there isn't much scope for using one's mind. Even though Prem is Ajab, the story has no Ghazab there. It's just a normal story presented in a new packet. Still, I loved the overall package a lot. Go for it, I'd say.

Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani
One of of my favourite directors Raj Kumar Santoshi, known for his admirable story telling skills returns on the screen with his romantic comedy featuring Ranbir Kapoor & Katrina Kaif. There are huge expectations from the three and everyone is looking forward to witness another applaudable comedy on the lines of Santoshi's highly appreciated "Andaz Apna Apna". The promos are exciting and the songs are good. Hence, the stage is all set for just another blockbuster of the season from the maker of brilliant movies ranging from "Ghayal" & "Damini" to "Pukar" & "Halla Bol".But now after watching the latest project from one of my most admired directors, I remember a phrase which I don't believe in really, but is often used by the artistic people in the creative field. It is called "CREATIVE BLOCK" which refers to a phase in the life of creative people where they are not able to create as per their own set standards and come up with some shockingly underworked projects which were completely unexpected from a person of their status. "Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani" exactly falls in that category. Starting with a deliberately created comedy sequence, the movie clearly gives you an idea that it is not going to be what was being expected. And as the clock moves on you realise that this time Santoshi has delivered the weakest movie of his sparkling career.
Surprisingly, the film has got nothing before intermission except the sincere, skillful performance of Ranbir and glamorous looks of Katrina. There is neither any story development in progress nor any well defined characters on the screen as seen in the previous works of the director. Till intermission only the love angle is visible to the viewers and one keeps on wondering that where the hell is movie heading towards. Beside this, when the real plot unfolds, it has no surprise elements as you already have guessed it without any serious efforts.
Post interval, with the introduction of some new characters, the movie even slides down further due to its disastrously weak writing. In fact there are only few hilarious scenes having the exclusive Santoshi touch towards the climax of the movie. But they are very few in quantity, compared to the movie's enormous promotional campaign emphasizing on comedy. The final sequence in the Don's den is also similar to the one seen in "Andaz Apna Apna" but it greatly lacks in content.
The movie has only one performer throughout and he is Ranbir Kapoor at his best. Giving excellent notable performance, he simply shows that he knows his job very well. Katrina on the other hand has got nothing great written for her in the script. So she remains as a pretty face in the movie who he capable of giving much better. The rest of the entire cast fails to make any kind of impact on the viewer which is not a routine kind of feature in a Raj Kumar Santoshi film.
Moreover, Santoshi makes many strange and bizarre kind of moves in his current offering which raises enough doubts on his real involvement in the project. For instance, the confusion over the city in which the story is staged, the short cameo ofSalman Khan in the first half, the un-necessary stammering act of both Ranbir & Katrina, the broken English dialogue scene of Ranbir and the surprising entry of a character resembling JESUS towards the end. Actually speaking, all these scenes doesn't seem to be directed by the Santoshi we know from so many years. He may have not tasted success in many of his previous projects, but there has never been a BAD Santoshi film as APKGK.
Musically, the movie does have few good numbers from Pritam which may go un-noticed due to the under-performance of the film. Cinematography serves the purpose well but it's sad to see that we still have to move on to the hill stations and snow-mountains to film a romantic song featuring the lead. But actually, the main culprit here remains the writing department which takes everything back to the mediocre levels.
In the end, let's take this movie as a result of an unproductive phase in the career of an immensely talented director. And let's pray that he gives us a much better and polished product next time.

We all make mistakes in life, the makers of Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani too did.. but no that was in not in making the movie
You are Rajkumar Santoshi.. hit maker. When I go to watch your film, I know I will be entertained, like I was in RACE.. like the cult classic "Andaaz apna apna", the powerful "lajja" and the reasonable "pukar" . But I also know you make "China Gate" and oops, "Halla Bol" .. but hey, for a true fan of bollywood.. quality/logic etc is never reason to not like a movie right? All we crave for is "entertainment".. but entertainment too is a tough act.
APGK has everything going for it. Chartbusting music, a coup of a casting with the dependable and promising Ranbir Kapoor, and the luckiest of all bollywood beauties. Katrina Kaif herself. Both very pretty faces and does the jobs given to them more than well mostly.
But it failed for me at several levels from the first five minutes of forced establishment of characters..
I don't intend to analyze this film because there isn't anything to.. the failure as I said before, was in setting my expectation right.. The promotions just failed to tell me it was a David dhawan-ish, Priyadarshan-ish, mindless slapstick comedy train that was not meant to be romantic at all.. I, was in the mood to watch a bollywood love story with some humour thrown in.. not this. I think the marketing of this film is the culprit for the sadness I felt through the first half of APGK. I was disappointed with the highschool stage play like script and characters while trying to see some real romance happening. But all I get is out and out stupidity-forced comedy, and I am an idiot, that I still did not recognize what genre of film this was..
But once I did understand where this was going. I left my thinking beside and laughed like a lunatic at all the crazy over the top acting/slapping/ goof ups etc happening on screen. And trust me, the stupidity is pretty cute to watch.. the girls in the hall were testimony to the fact that the movie had sold itself to them.. orgasmic delight audible in their combined giggles everytime Ranbir cracked a joke on screen.. stupid maybe, but joke nonetheless..
So what is it that I came out feeling? "light" .. The movie is chaplin-isqe in its approach, and once you get it, you can bear it. Yes, only bear it.
But even through the meelee, you cant help but notice how capable Ranbir is as an actor, just holding even the worst written scenes tightly together with his sincere effort and pure talent.. and Katrina increasingly holds on her own on the screen, supported ably by her outrageously pretty presence and just adequate "acting" .. her accented hindi is almost her strength now, and those eyes do speak when they need to..
So should you watch it? Expect and Andaz Apna Apna, and go in.. it wont better it, but wont disappoint you either.. It wont touch you, except the music you wont remember a thing.. you will wonder how or why this movie was made.. but you will laugh through the second half, though forced, and come out feeling a little light, and with a grin. You might even ask "yeh kya dekhke aaya meine"
My craving for some bollywood style romance remains unsatisfied.. but I would fire the marketing guys if I was putting my money on this movie.. because the trailer is more romantic than the whole movie put together.. Set people's expectations right yaar.
2/5
1.5 for Ranbir and Katrina together, and .5 for the amazing song/dance locations
