Ahahaha Mannu, you're so cuteeeee.
Why am I not excited for this movie. I feel like this'll be one of those movies I watch when I have nothing better to do than study, or to kill time, or if I'm feeling down. Hmm.

Rajkumar Santoshi has changed lanes. Known for intense, hard-hitting movies [with the sole exception of ANDAZ APNA APNA], Santoshi now attempts a rom-com in AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI, his new endeavour. That's something we all know by now, right?

But not many of us know that Santoshi is equally at home handling a comedy. And AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI proves it.

If you're attempting a rom-com, you need to get a few things right...
One, the romance should be livewire. Ditto for the chemistry between the on-screen pair.
Two, the film should make you laugh. As simple as that!

In AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI, the romantic moments are endearing. Most importantly, the on-screen chemistry is electrifying. Ranbir and Katrina look great together!

I've often said that comedy is serious business and the audience has moved over from banana peel humour in movies. The comedy in AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI - though it borders on absurdity - is funny in most parts. Sure, there're times when you feel that the humour looks forced [climax fight especially], but you don't grudge it since Santoshi's intentions are crystal clear from Scene 1 onwards: Entertainment ke liye kuch bhi karega.

Another factor that goes in its favour is Pritam's music, who belts out a couple of lilting tracks.

On the flip side, the film could've done with a fresh plotline. When you talk of 'Ghazab Kahani', it has to be ghazab by all means. It shouldn't fall prey to predictability, but the second hour succumbs to mediocrity occasionally.

Yet, despite the blemishes, AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI is a full-on entertainer. One thing is for sure, you'd fall in prem with Prem and his antics. An ideal date movie that should connect with the youth.

Prem's [Ranbir Kapoor] fundas in life were very simple - be happy, make others happy. A case of mistaken identity leads Prem to almost kidnap Jenny [Katrina Kaif], who was brought up by indifferent and uncaring foster parents.

Prem falls in love with Jenny, but realizes gradually that Jenny is in love with someone else [Upen Patel], the son of a conniving politician [Govind Namdeo]. Prem decides to sacrifice his love and get the lovers married.

In the first sequence, Santoshi makes it loud and clear that AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI is very unlike his previous ventures; this one harbours on illogical situations. Right from the time Ranbir sets his eyes on Katrina [the yellow outfit episode], the film is a roller coaster ride.

A few sequences entertain you thoroughly. Sample these: Katrina slaps Ranbir when he stammers as well. She feels he's imitating her; Ranbir's sequence in the church; Salman Khan's cameo; the love-hate relationship that Ranbir and his father [Darshan Jariwala] share; the sequence at the party; the interval point when Ranbir falls on the ground literally... the first hour of the film simply rocks!

But the second hour makes you a little grumpy. The third angle of the triangle [Upen Patel] isn't convincing, while his father's [Govind Namdeo] track is beaten to death. Even the villain [Zakir Hussain] is a sore point.

Watching the second hour makes you feel that the film may've had a longer running time and in order to bring down the length, a number of scenes must've been chopped off, which, in turn, must've resulted in continuity lapses. For instance, Katrina's kidnap by the villains looks too sudden. When and how did it occur?

Yet, there're two sequences in this hour which are remarkable and which should bring the house down. One, when Ranbir wears Katrina's top to hide her presence in the house and the climax fight, when Katrina mistakenly bangs Ranbir a couple of times.

Directorially, Santoshi proves the naysayers wrong and bounces back with a film that the youth would relate to. You can't write off the maker and AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI proves it. Pritam's music has 'Hit' written all over it. S. Thiru's cinematography is first-rate.

Ranbir Kapoor is the next big thing and AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI proves it yet again. He's charismatic, emotes exceptionally well and tickles your funny bone without making faces. It's a fantastic performance all the way. Katrina Kaif continues to surprise. She surprised you in NEW YORK. She surprises you again in this film. She scores in both emotional and light scenes. Also, Ranbir and Katrina make a wonderful on-screen couple.

Darshan Jariwala is exceptional. Smita Jaykar is very good. Upen Patel is decent. Govind Namdeo is getting typecast. Zakir Hussain is fair. Navneet Nishan is alright.

On the whole, AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI entertains majorly. At the box-office, the fantastic pre-release campaign coupled with the terrific chemistry between Ranbir and Katrina, excellent music by Pritam and tremendous appeal for youth should ensure a big start for the film at the ticket window. The business prospects seem excellent, thus ensuring handsome returns for its investors.

Ok guys ..saw it last nite...( is there a cure for my average taste in weekend entertainment,,,watching Bolly movies...😛)
Well firstly some parts of it are genuinely funny....Raj Kumar Santoshi has managed to make some comic scenes really hilarious...
ranbir Kapoor....well u have to give it to this guy...he works with a lot of conviction and it shows on the screen...he proves yet again why he is touted to be the next superhero..Katrina is good in the comic scenes, looks beautiful but her serious scenes are a bit of a let down and is she ever gonna lose that accent..
The story is weak and predictable but some wonderfully written and performed comedy scenes lift the sagging momentum...Darshan jariwala and smita jayakar as Ranbir's parents are wonderfully cast ...the climax is hackneyed...a tribute to the 70's villain dens complete with dangling ropes and a steaming tank...
the music is awesome and the songs are wonderfully picturized...in one song Katrina looks ravishing in a black gown!
all in all was a paisa vasool for me...nothing memorable...nothing wow...but still good entertainment...
3/ 5 from me

My Parent's saw the paid preview for this.
They hated the film despite the fact that they both love Ranbir. They said that he was good in the film and hillarious at parts but the film was really silly and stupid.
My parent's never found Katrina a good or even an average actress. They always say that she can't act and it wasn't any different over here.

Cant believe katrina still cant act after doing so many flicks .....unbelieveable ...but ranbir is talented for sure ........and its so baffling that a movie like AAA never got any support but this not so gazab movie is getting such gazab reviews ...............ne ways ...i didnt find anything gazab in this ajab prem's kahani .............may be its just that my sense of humour is a little weird .....
I am actually quite saddened that good movies like WYR dont get the desired reviews and crap like APKGK n LAK get good reviews where in the story is not even put across coherently .....

Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani Movie Review

Posted by: Indicine Team | November 6th, 2009 | Email This Post Email This Post

Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif, two of the most good-looking actors in Bollywood come together in Rajkumar Santoshi's Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani. Santoshi in an interview promised a Laurel-Hardy kinda comedy, something that would appeal to the masses and classes, a movie that would be universally accepted, much like his cult classic Andaaz Apna Apna which released over a decade ago. Can Santoshi who has hard-hitting critically acclaimed films to his credit, recreate the AAA magic?

The movie is about Prem (Ranbir Kapoor) and Jennifer (Katrina Kaif). Prem is the president of 'Happy Club' which has a few simple rules - be happy, make others happy, unite couples - but its these very rules that test Prem when he eventually falls head over heels in love with Jennifer.

Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani Review

Here's what we liked about Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani

  • If there is one reason why Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani is worth a watch, it has to be the brilliance of Ranbir Kappor. Surrounded by mediocrity and unnecessary madness, Ranbir stands tall in yet another fabulous performance. Undoubtedly, the future 'superstar' of Bollywood!
  • Some well written scenes (mentioned below) make the movie, a good one time watch.
  • Katrina Kaif adds immense value to the movie, purely by her screen presence and stunning looks. Its hard to take your eyes off her, due to which you manage to sit through those 2 - 3 song and dance numbers in the second half.
  • Supporting characters do well.
  • The chemistry between Katrina and Ranbir was excellent.
  • Tere Hone Laga Hoon was by far the best soundtrack in the movie.

Sequences that deserve a mention

  • When Katrina invites Ranbir to be her dance partner and the sequences that follow with her chosen-by-parents groom are hilarious. Slightly over the top, with Ranbir dancing all the way through with weird expressions, but funny nonetheless.
  • When the jobless Ranbir takes up a job in a sweets shop to impress Katrina.
  • Those broken English dialogue scenes were nice, again credit to Ranbir's fantastic dialogue delivery.
  • When Ranbir's mother, in an effort to stop his father from entering the bathroom, flirts with her husband.
  • Govind Namdeo's introductory scene which includes that funny ringtone of his assistant.
  • Last but not the least, when Salman Khan (as himself) makes a dashing special appearance. The girlfriend - yours or mine talk - is sure to bring the house down.

Why we don't recommend a trip to theaters.

  • What starts off as a light-hearted romantic movie, turns ugly in the second half with slapstick - Priyadashan style comedy.
  • The romance between Ranbir and Katrina almost works, but the addition of 2 unnecessary characters into Katrina's life somewhat ruins it.
  • Like most madcap comedies in the recent past, Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani lacks a coherent storyline.
  • Upen Patel is a non-actor, even in those 10 odd minutes of screen time, he irritates.
  • Ideally Ajab Premki should have been a good 30 mins shorter. Blame those songs, all of which are badly placed.

Overall, Ajab Prem KI Ghazab Kahani belongs to Ranbir Kapoor and to a certain extent Katrina Kaif. The first half is good but its those post-interval portions that prove to be a major let down. Wait for the DVD.
