Yeah, he was in love with Suraiya, but her family opposed it, so he went on to marry someone else.

Here is the article where it talks about his biography.

When Dev Anand lost Zeenat to Raj Kapoor

Dev Anand's autobiography Romancing With Life released last week on his birthday, and gave us a chance to finally know him.

The book, which captures the star right from his struggling days to the present, gives us great details about his acting years, his family, and the women in his life.

One of them was Zeenat Aman, whom Devsaab launched in Hare Rama Hare Krishna. The actor, who admits to falling in love with the young actress at the time, talks about their relationship in this excerpt taken from his autobiography.

And keep reading on about Devsaab's interesting interaction with former Pakistani cricket captain Imran Khan, and Aamir in his film, Awwal Number.

Zeenat and I started being linked with each other in the magazines and newspapers that people hungry for gossip love to read. For, while she was the adorable painting that they loved to watch, admire and emulate, I was the painter who had etched that painting. The colours were mine as was the finished drawing on the canvas. While she as a person was God's creation, her image was of my making, and together we became inseparable in the public eye.

Whenever and wherever she was talked about glowingly, I loved it. And whenever and wherever I was discussed in the same vein, she was jubilant. In the subconscious, we had become emotionally attached to each other.

At the silver jubilee celebration of Hare Rama Hare Krishna at a theatre in Calcutta, as Usha Uthup, the famous pop singer, sang the Dum maro dum number on stage and reached the crescendo of her rendering, she pulled Zeenat, who was sitting in the audience, on stage; Zeenat in turn pulled me on stage too, so that together we could sing along with Usha. The audience in a moment of spontaneity also jumped up on stage and the song became a chorus of over a hundred voices. The maddened crowds picked Zeenat up on their shoulders, raising her heavenwards. I felt proud of her, and yet, at the same time, I felt a stab of jealously; of possessiveness as well. How could they own her in that way? She was my prized possession! I knew it was a stupid thought on my part, but I couldn't help it.

A couple of years later, after the premiere of Ishq Ishq Ishq at Metro cinema, Raj Kapoor kissed Zeenat in full view of the invited audience, congratulating her for her sparkling performance in the film. That must have made her evening all the more sparkling. Again I felt proud of her, as much as I admired Raj Kapoor for his honest and spontaneous reaction. Complimenting her was indirectly complimenting her mentor, and I inwardly saluted my contemporary filmmaker for his sound judgement.

Yet, I was jealous of him for making advances on what I considered my sole possession, my discovery, my leading lady, and desiring her with a kiss.

WOW Thats interesting.. From an outsiders perspective all these stars appear wholesome.. content and the lucky ones but I guess jeleousy and posessiveness is an emotion that gets bigger and bigger with all the money and fame.. So what about his wife then.. did he cheat on her.. or these are just khayali pulao..

Khayali pulao, well it seems there was no reciprocation from the side of Zeenat Aman. She had no idea about this until the biography came out and I guess she had to deal with it then. Or maybe she knew, who really knows? Just because there is no physical relationship persay, lusting after someone doesn't get you in the clear either. Dev Anand admitted his marriage was distant, but I can't think of an affair either.

I agree but you never know with these actors and back in the day adultry was on record high in Bollywood.. Dilip has many affiars too.. with his co-stars before his marriage.. I think.. He had a thing going on with Madhubala.. And the infamous thing that he was going out with Saira bano's mother who was his age.. but ended up marying her daughter.. Is this true.. If it is then how bizzare it is.. LOL.. but atleast he was happy with Saira..

Bapre, I never heard of the mother thing until now. It could just be a rumor. But I know Madhubala's father opposed the relationship with Dilip Kumar and then she married Kishore Kumar. I thought that Dilip and Saira Banu had a pretty stable married life.

i m biased in this regard..
i am dev anand fan!! he is extra ordinarily good luking man , esp in the black and white days.. i said i m biased becoz majority feel and believe dilip kumar is a better actor and i hv seen his work truly he ws gr88 bt i still somehw never connected to his personality.. loved devdas and many of his movies bt dev anand for me.. and the mannerisms dat every1 complains , him tending to go over board , i personally feel dats his charishma! during those days most ppl hd kind of mannerisms and style.. and somewat today i will surely wnt watch movies of stars if they hav such kind of mannerisms😆, bt wen it comes to movies of dat time, i hv no problems with overboard attitudes..
dev anands guide is my fav film ..
bt if i hv to pick one actor of dt time who i m huge fan , it is raj kapoor..

Dev Anand definitely had a certain ada. Couldn't agree more with that, Ammu. He was one of a kind.

Oh, Raj Kapoor. I enjoyed his direction more. But Awaara and Barsaat are classics for me. Those films just were so stirring, and the songs were classic too. Also, Mere Naam Joker, I watched as a kid and was just so stunned by it.

Sorry, ignore my post, Suku.:) Or the second part, I just felt like talking about older films a bit.

Nana Nimmy lage raho.. your tidbits are pretty intersting.. I havent seen that many Raj kapoor movies.. but they say he was ahead of his time.. so he must be good.. Dev babu was inspired by Gregory peck right.. And he even got a chance to meet him.. I remember seeing Gregory peck in to kill a mocking bird.. I read that play in skool.. And this is totally of topic.. But have you guyz ever read death of a salesman.. such a great tragic play.. an American classic.
