Post masala films like Chaalbaaz and Tumko Na Bhool Payenge director Pankuj Parashar returns to what he always wanted to do with 'Banaras- A Mystic Love Story'. Previously called 'Banaras Ek Dhun Pyar Ki' it stars Urmila Matondkar and Ashmit in the romantic lead. Parashar has succeeded in completing his 45-day schedule in the city of Lord Shiva after confronting certain protests by the natives. Himesh Reshammiya has composed the songs of the film that are based on the 'Banaras gharana'. Banaras is a love story between a physics student and a low cast music teacher and how their love is met by the harsh tides of cast and class.
The character sketches:
Urmila Matondkar as Shwetambari a physics student at the University is wealthy man's only daughter. She faces adversity when she falls for Sohum a non-Brahmin.
Ashmit Patel as Sohum disciple of Babaji he teaches music in Banaras Hindu University where he falls in love with Shwetabari. His love is pure and knows no bounds, no caste differences.
Naseeruddin Shah as Babaji an enlightened soul he is Sohum's teacher who helps him seek oneness with God.
Dimple Kapadia as Gayatri Devi, Shwetamabri's devoted mother. She would go to any extent to bring smile on her daughter's face.
Raj Babbar as Mahendranath, a wealthy Brahmin who loves his daughter and wife.
Urmila Matondkar is walking tall after her getting asserted as an actress with films like Bhoot, Ek Haseena Thi and Pinjar. This non-commercial movie might show yet anoer facet of Urmila as an actor while Ashmit Patel still has to prove his point.
Banaras- A Mystic Love Story will release somewhere in November 2005
