Off for 6, over the top

Delhi-6
Rating : * 1/2

There's good reason to make an entire film of videos for AR Rahman's finest music to Prasoon Joshi's inspired words. This film is one-half that: montage sequences after another; a track after the other, and yet another. You tap your feet. It doesn't speak very highly of the film itself.

Those who went to colleges more home-bred to the culture of Delhi speak fondly of a class of students called the 'Delhi 6 types' (6 being pin-code for the area around Old Delhi's Chandni Chowk). Usually Muslim by birth, considered arrogant by nature, you'd always find 'Delhi 6 types' on a motorbike, sporting hair-do encouraged by a film-star of their choice. Their general sense of style is determined less by weather, more by the hit film of the season: sleeveless vests one day, leather jackets another. They speak with a fine command over Urdu. This makes them easier to identify within a box.

Abhishek Bachchan doesn't play a 'Delhi 6' type. Unfortunately no one in this film does. Bachchan's character, Roshan, is an American, whose parents moved to the States before his birth. He's neither been to India before, nor to a foreign-exchange counter. He tips in US dollars; wears aviator sunglasses, all decked up at his own terrace. The annoyingly constant expression on his face is either of sullen, deep thought (second-half). Or, a dry sarcastic smirk that holds back a laugh (before-interval). He rarely talks.

When he does, he goes, "India works," or nudges his grandmother watching Ram Leela, "Hey daadi, look, it's the golden deer." The tongue rolls along the 'r' in a fake twang mostly acquired from airports like the JFK. In fact it should be called the 'airport accent'.

Sonam plays a sprightly young thing in Old Delhi, though she hasn't much of screen-time or story of her own. She calls the American Born Confused Desi in her neighbourhood a "burger chhaap". It's a phrase from the 1980s. The young in Karachi call their American-types "burgs" (McDonald's, the root, is the same).

The Chandni Chowk girl sees Indian Idol, a talent-hunt show, as escape-route from an arranged marriage that may seal her freedom forever. The ABCD boy and the girl-next-door fall in love, though you'll forever wonder how or why or when.

Abhishek's Roshan isn't quite on a homecoming trip. He's merely there to drop his ailing grandmother off to their ancestral home. He sticks around doing nothing in particular. I'm not sure of his future. He certainly has no past or present. The silly, supposedly suave hero appears at best a jobless bummer prying into people's private lives. No surprise, everyone mistakes him for a mysterious serial-attacker called 'monkey man' who's been hounding the neighborhood and national news for a while.

The actual distance between this Walled City and a swanky world city called New Delhi is about five minutes on the Metro. It doesn't show. This Roshan-boy is likely to spend more time in cafes, bookshops and bars in and around Connaught Place. He does the Ram Leela every night, and hangs instead among, a horrid cop after him (Vijay Raaz), cunning, 1950s 'Lalaji' (Prem Chopra), bored uncle in his 60s (Rishi Kapoor), a 1980s 'Hindu social drama' family of divided brothers (Om Puri, Pawan Malhotra), a 1930s untouchable (Divya Duttta) who the locality won't have near, neither would the angelic, Muslim grandmom (Waheeda Rehman), back from five years in America. There are then the low-caste slaves and maulvis and repressed wives and rabid Hindu fundamentalists, even Amitabh Bachchan in a mythical Middle-Earth.

Mehra sets a disjointed Delhi-6 in a strange space-vacuum, more like RK Narayan's Malgudi or Saeed Mirza's Nukkad. Nuance may be a purpose. Yet not one character is even loosely established; none, vaguely captivating; no one you may care for. Everything is a caricature, everyone over-the-top. Communal riots break out. The hero bumbles on.

The film juxtaposes TV images of India's mission to the moon with illiterate public-frenzy over an alien 'kala bandar' (black monkey) with a mother-board on his chest, and springs on his feet. The black monkey is eventually a metaphor for the demon inside us all, which expresses itself in conflicts the world over.

You get the premise. What on earth is this hotchpotch picture?

B.O. update: 'Delhi 6' decent at some plexes, dull at majority of screens

- By Taran Adarsh, February 21, 2009 - 07:48 IST

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's new release DELHI 6 opened to a 60% - 70% response at some multiplexes. The film was best at a handful of plexes in Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bangalore. Even an 'A' class centre like Kolkata opened to a lukewarm response. At a majority of centres, the business was 25% - 30%. The single screens were even lower. This writer spoke to several distributors/exhibitors of various territories and the feedback is negative. The indications are, the business is expected to fall on Saturday.

The below-the-mark start of DELHI 6 will hit Abhishek Bachchan hard. After the financial setback of DRONA, which was a solo hero project, Abhishek had to prove his mettle with DELHI 6. But Abhishek hasn't been accepted in the film, plus the business is on the lower side.

Bandar chhap

**1/2
Dir: Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra
Cast: Abhishek Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor, Waheeda Rehman, Rishi Kapoor
Sarita Tanwar

WHAT'S IT about: When you have a film like Rang De Basanti to your credit, comparisons are bound to be made. But that would be rather unfair, so this one shall be judged purely on its own merit. Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's Delhi-6 is bland fare despite all the right ingredients. He attempts multiple plots and situations — each with a deeper message — and in the bargain, cannot even get one of them right. The film begins with US-based Roshan (Abhishek Bachchan) returning to Delhi because his dying grandmother (Waheeda Rehman) wants to spend her last days in her hometown. Roshan is overwhelmed by the capital city and its people. As friends and family accept him into their fold, Roshan gets drawn towards Bittu (Sonam Kapoor) who dreams of becoming a pop star. But Roshan soon realises how delicate these newly-formed relationships are as he gets embroiled into the life-threatening game of communal divide and politics.

WHAT'S HOT: To Mehra's credit, he has shot Delhi like a dream. We've seen the plush side of the city very often but Mehra captures the old and rustic Delhi, which has its own unique charm. He brings forth the old-world charm of kothis, crowded bylanes and the sea of people rather effortlessly. Scenes like Eid at the Jama Masjid and the spectacular Ram Leela are awe-inspiring. The manner is which Rakeysh depicts how the monkey man story develops on TV, is a reflection of the times we live in. The mood of the film is subtle and smooth — at times, it almost looks like a Sooraj Barjatya movie with a different sensibility. A R Rahman's musical score is delightful — watch out for the Genda Phool track where Mehra even gets Waheeda Rehman to do a classic jig. Among the performances, Abhishek Bachchan is supremely restrained and gives his best to the character. Sonam Kapoor is a talent to watch for — despite an ill-defined role, she stands out. Waheeda Rehman is perfectly cast; Pawan Malhotra scores once again and Deepak Dobriyal as the Muslim restaurant owner is excellent. Rishi Kapoor and Divya Dutta deserve special mention.

WHAT'S NOT: Mehra complicates things with convoluted tracks and confusing screenplay. The problems unfold right from the beginning — the scene of Roshan's first time in Delhi is like a Hyderabad Blues episode. The establishing of his varied characters is flawed — for example, brothers Om Puri and Pawan Malhotra are at war — why? We see Bittu's bua many times but the script leaves it at that. The Atul Kulkarni-Divya Dutta track is added just for the sake of delving into the 'untouchability' issue — again, Mehra only scratches it from the surface. This is the film's undoing — Mehra trying to focus on far too many issues. There's the Hindu-Muslim clash; forced arranged marriages; religion in politics and most importantly, the Monkey Man. Mehra uses the Monkey Man to illustrate a more pertinent point but that falls flat. There are no highs and lows in this film — it just wavers around until you finally lose your patience. The bursts of Ram Leela scenes throughout the movie serve no purpose. The climax is easily the worst we've seen in recent times. From being tense and dramatic in one scene, it suddenly becomes preachy in the next and shockingly farcical, thereon.

WHAT TO DO: Watch it only if you're as obsessed with the Monkey Man as Rakeysh Mehra is — else, save your money for some Bandar Chhap Danth Manjan.

yup it's a family movie. It doesn't have that scene in there no more.
The movie was very boring. I'll be surprised if this movie does well. It's a waste of time movie. Sonam has a small role in the movie, more like a special appearance. Sonam is beautiful but I didn't like her acting at all. The only scene she was okay is the last scene where she was crying. Abhi was good in the movie.
