Recession hits Bollywood

The ongoing global recession has hit almost every industry, Bollywood included. Films are being shelved and put on hold due to the credit crunch. We took a look at some big budgeted flicks that have been put on the back burner because they require huge amounts of funding.

Sushmita Sen's and Ketan Desai's Rani Laxmi Bai

Sushmita Sen decided to debut as a director with this historical drama set in 1857 and based on Rani Laxmi Bai. She was to also set to coproduce and play the title role in her dream project. Apart from this, the film 130 crore was going to be coproduced by Ketan Desai and shot in parts of Madhya Pradesh and Film City Mumbai . But the current economic unrest has made Sush shelve the project.

Sushmita Sen's spokesperson says, "The project is not completely shelved but it has been put on hold because of the credit crunch. Sushmita is still working on the research aspect of the movie."

Co-producer Ketan Desai says, "The film needs to be nurtured properly and we are still at a stage where we are working on it. The whole of Bollywood has been affected by the recession to some extent. This time will pass."

ABCL Corp's The Legend Of Kunal, directed by Dr.Chandraprakash Dwivedi

The film revolves around the strange and loving relationship shared by King Ashoka (Amitabh Bachchan) and his son Veera Kunal (Arjun Rampal). Set in 240 BC, the film begins with the emperor converting to Buddhism. Another subplot of the movie is Ashoka's fifth wife Pishyarakshita's (Tabu) sexual attraction towards her stepson Veera, who is married to Kanchanmala (Amrita Rao). Shooting is supposed to take place at Filmcity and in northern parts of India.

Dr.Chandraprakash Dwivedi says, "The recession is affecting everyone so it is natural that it is affecting the film industry. When such problems arise, we have to make sure that we are secure in money matters. The film requires a lot of work as its budget is approximately 30 to 40 crores."

Anurag Kashyap's Doga

Anurag Kashyap had decided to make a no-holds-barred action film with Kunal Kapoor playing his first action hero. The character Doga is inspired from Raj comics which are particularly popular in Northern India. Doga's budget, with its special effects, amounts to 50 to 60 crores.

The official spokesperson from Sony International, which is producing the film, says, "We are still working on the project as it requires a very high quality of special effects. Anurag Kashyap and the film's cinematographer are going to the US to do further research. The shooting locations have not been decided on yet. We have taken the recession into consideration."

Anurag Kashyap was not available for comment.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Ash-Hrithik starrer

Aishwarya Rai and Hrithik Roshan are set to sizzle onscreen for the third time, after Dhoom 2 and Jodha Akbar, in Bhansali's yet untitled film. The film's script is written by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Earlier, it was said that shooting would start by mid-2009 but those plans have now been cancelled.

A source close to Sanjay Leela Bhansali says, "The film can't progress right now because of the recession. Sanjay is busy with the script which he will finished within a few months. The film's budget is approximately 40 to 50 crores. Apart from this, he is also working on Heera Mandi."

Sujoy Ghosh's Aladin And The Mystery Of The Lamp

Sujoy Ghosh's modern day Aladin went on the floors in December, 2007. Eros International in association with Sujoy Ghosh's production company Boundscript is producing this hi-end special effects film. Eros made its entry into visual effects with their recently launched EyeQube Studios. Aladin stars Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt and Riteish Deshmukh. It will introduce Jackie Fernandez opposite Riteish. According to the makers, the shooting of the film is complete and it's ready to release.

Director and co-producer Sujoy Ghosh says, "The film will release post-June. Recession is affecting Bollywood but I'm hoping that Eros earns a profit from our film."

Co-producers Bunty Walia's and Sanjay Dutt's 21 Battle of Saragarhi- From Ashes to Glory

Bunty Walia planned to make a film on the battle of Saragarhi with Sanjay Dutt but the ongoing recession has put the Rs. 200 crore film on hold. Shooting will take place in Morocco as it is the perfect location for the battle scenes.

Producer Bunty Walia says, "I'm planning to make it but not right now as this is not the right time to make a film with a budget of 200 crore. The industry is suffering from recession and my film requires a lot of manpower and money power. There are no changes in the cast of the movie. Sanjay Dutt will be playing the role of the Sikh regiment leader."
