Bollywood stars get seriously fashionable

By Priyanka Khanna, Indo-Asian News Service

New Delhi, Feb 18 (IANS) Signature line of clothing that are inspired, crafted and fine-tuned by film stars themselves is the hottest new trend in the world of fashion.
< =text/> < src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js" =text/>

Jennifer Lopez has it and so do Sarah Jessica Parker, Eminem, Britney Spears and loads of other international celebrities, so why should Indian film stars be far behind.

Not content with merely endorsing clothes brands or gracing the opening of clothes stores, hot and happening Bollywood stars are increasingly getting involved with fashion wear at the sketching stage itself.

John Abraham and Hrithik Roshan lead the list when it comes to adding a very personal touch and bringing out signature fashion collections. While John has tied-up with Wrangler, Hrithik is working very closely with ITC in a bid to find a way into your wardrobes.

John's involvement with his own line needs to be seen to believed. Each piece of his collection comes with small notes sticking out from the inside pockets containing personal comments from the actor himself on the design, style and how he came up with the look.

Like John, Hrithik's association with ITC's John Player began as a brand endorsement but has taken a personal turn.

Atul Chand of ITC said in an interview: 'The association benefits both. It brings alive the personality of the brand and helps establish a style statement for the star or a specific character the actor is trying to popularise.'

Apart from the above two, actor Fardeen Khan, after severing ties as brand ambassador for clothes brand Provogue, is set to launch his own line. Model-actor Milind Soman is even working with designer Madhu Jain to revive handicraft in Kashmir.

The stunning Malaika Arora of 'Chaiyya chaiyya' fame has been turning down lucrative offers to sign up as brand ambassador by the dozen. She wants to bring out her own clothing line that will be an extension of her identity.

The linkage between film stars and fashion goes way back. In a nation where film stars are often equated with god, the kings and queens of celluloid have known to influence millions of people who try to think, dress, walk and even talk like them.

There were times when an entire generation of girls would style their hair in line with the hair-do of the leading female actors.

Young boys would ape clothes and even mannerisms of leading actors. Mothers of girls getting married would take posters of films to their tailors for getting wedding trousseaus made.

But at the same time some of the clothes that actors wore were so outlandish that even the most ardent fan would never follow suit. The thought that film stars could get into the clothing industry was once inconceivable.

'Today more than ever before fashion and showbiz go hand-in-hand,' says model-actor Samita Bangargi who launched her Fall Winter collection some four months ago.

Samita got involved in the clothes business after she was asked by a jeans brand to design for them. She was quick to recognise the potential in the trade and launched her own brand.

-*-

Given the increasing importance of revenue from brand placement in films and merchandising, the synergy between stars and fashion is set to increase many folds.

According to reports, in 2006 brand cameos earned around Rs.800 million and as a result, even small- and medium-budget movies as well as animated films can hope to cash in.

The figure is projected to climb to Rs.2 billion this year and reach Rs.8 billion in 2010.

Last year, Farhan Akhtar's 'Don' tied-up with international men's wear brand Louis Philippe, besides others like Tag Heuer watches, Motorola, Garnier, Citibank and Oakley sunglasses. The long list of brands piggyback riding on 'Krrish' included ITC's John Players.

Siddharth Roy Kapoor, senior vice-president, UTV, says that while branding does not contribute significantly to revenues yet, it has enormous potential.

'After 2006's success story, more FMCG brands and durables have woken up to the power of movies as a means to push their products. Companies are increasingly opting for joint promotions.'

For UTV's upcoming film 'Goal', Reebok worked closely with the film's costume designer to create outfits for the cast.

Besides helping to promote the movie with a media campaign, Reebok would also highlight its association with the movie.

-*-

As Bollywood is turning from gratuitous dance scenes and melodramatic romance to gritty storylines, actors are sporting more realistic looks. The men especially are experimenting with their on-screen look like never before.

Though our actors are yet to go in for drastic moves like Charlize Theron did in award-winning film 'Monster', but at least some are going the extra mile to look the part.

Aamir Khan leads the pack with his drive for perfection. Recently, he grew a moustache and gained weight for his title role in 'Mangal Pandey' and then he lost the kilos to play a college boy in 'Rang De Basanti'.

After stunning audiences with dramatically different looks in 'Krrish' and 'Dhoom 2', Hrithik is now growing a beard for the period look needed for Ashutosh Gowarikar's 'Akbar-Jodha'.

Even Abhishek Bachchan has been growing his hair for 'Jhoom Barabar Jhoom' and 'Drona'. No more fake wigs and beards for these guys.

After Saif, Hrithik falls ill!

After shooting round-the-clock for Ashutosh Gowariker's Jodha Akbar, flying back each evening to rehearse for the Filmfare Awards and shooting for an ad in Singapore, Hrithik Roshan is down with a severe attack of viral fever.

"I'm completely bed-ridden," Hrithik said from his home on Wednesday. "I've been working round-the-clock shuttling between Mumbai and Karjat. Then I also took off to Singapore for an ad.

All the time, I had high fever but was keeping it down with Paracetemol tablets. Today is the first day I'm resting. Post Saif's illness, I think we actors need to take care of ourselves."

Lately, Hrithik has also became self-indulgent with his food habits. "I'd been working out really hard to tone up for Dhoom:2, so I decided to give my body a break. I splurged for a while, but now I need to get back into shape.

Therefore after shooting and rehearsing for my Filmfare performance, I was also going to the gym. On top of all this, Ashutosh (Gowariker) hadn't warned me that we'd be doing sword-fighting sequences over the last 20 days when I was in and out of Mumbai and Karjat. All this has taken its toll. I'm completely exhausted and burning with a fever."

Need a break

He brightens up while speaking about his role as Akbar. "I've enjoyed playing everyone, from Rohit in Koi Mil Gaya to Aryan in Dhoom:2. But playing Akbar is a different challenge, as it required a lot of researched attention.

The Urdu professor who called on location to check our accents is happy. He hasn't been complaining yet, so I guess I'm doing it right," says Hrithik, who is in no mood to sign another film just yet.

"At the moment, I need a break after Jodha Akbar. One has to learn to listen to the warning signals from one's body."

Hrithik jokes on Aamir and Salman takes it easy

Recently Hrithik Roshan was invited as a guest on the second season of Koffee with Karan and he jokingly commented on the height of actors Aamir Khan and Salman Khan, but however his comment was not taken too well by some members in bollywood.

However Hrithik claims there was no malicious intent behind his remark, he claims "If people really took offense to my spontaneous remark, then I must say we really lack a sense of humour. My comment on Aamir-Salman should be taken in the right spirit and I didn't mean any disrespect to them."

Karan too remarked that the comment made by Hrithik on Aamir and Salman was just a joke and not meant to be taken seriously. Well, we wonder if the 'Andaz Apna Apna' duo have taken any offense to Hrithik's comments…They are too cool to worry about such stuffs…right?

Hrithik Performance at Filmfare

Hrithik Roshan rehearsing for the 52nd Fair One Filmfare awards

When we read about Hrithik's illness in the papers just a day before his performance for the 52nd Fair One Filmfare Awards, 2006, we were wondering how the star would be able to perform. However, the moment Hrithik entered dressed in black body-hugging suit we forgot all our worries. Here was Hrithik with just as much Dhoom in him as ever before.

The performances of the ace dancer went off brilliantly, with Hrithik getting the sequence correct in just one take most of the time. But the dancers of Shiamak's troupe were equally a dream to watch with vivid outfits that looked stunning on perfectly sculptured bodies. Hrithik reviewed each performance of his on the screen and only okayed the takes when he was satisfied. In one incident, he wasn't too happy with a shot and told the light guys to black out everyone on stage but himself. It was done the change in effect was dramatic!

During another seqeunce Hrithik couldn't get his breakdance perfect as there wasn't enough friction on the stage. An assistant scraped the soles of his shoes with a knife to give him a better grip, but Hrithik would not perform till he had Pepsi. The Pepsi was brought, but far from drinking it, Hrithik poured it on the studio floor and stepped into it. The sticky nature of the cola gave him enough grip for a great performance!

Hrithik's first performance was his trademark ' Ek pal ka jeena' from Kaho Na Pyaar Hai, followed by 'Main hoon don', from Don. He also performed to 'Dhoom machale'. But 'Rock n roll soniye', which he has performed with kids was by far the most endearing. About 50 youngsters dressed in bright orange saris and black suits put their best foot forward along with Hrithik in this number.

The associate sponsors are Bisleri and Ashrafi Finance. The television partner is Sony Television.

No disrespect for Salman-Aamir: Htirhik Roshan

By Subhash K Jha

An off the cuff, jokey remark by Hrithik about his colleagues has raised some eyebrows.

During the 'rapidfire' round of Koffee With Karan, the prankish host asked Hrithik which among the two Khans, Aamir and Salman, would he like to work with. To this Hrithik, tongue firmly in cheek observed there wasn't much of a choice since they were both of the same height.

The remark has caused some eyebrows to shoot up in the more conservative sections of Bollywood who feel Hrithik was taking a potshot at the two Khans' height.

"Come on!" Hrithik laughs out aloud. "If people really took offence to my off-the-cuff remark then I must say we lack a sense of humour. Karan's show is meant to be light-hearted and fun and I had myself a ball with Priyanka. I certainly didn't mean any disrespect to Salman or Aamir.

"In fact after the comment on their height, my next statement was, 'That's the only department where I can score over them.' Aamir and Salman are such awesome talents. They're legends. It'll take me years to get anywhere near them."

When contacted Karan Johar who's currently visiting the US laughed out aloud.

"Surely even a perfectionist like Hrithik is allowed to have fun on my show. And the remark on Aamir and Salman was certainly not meant to offend. I'm amazed at how seriously we take ourselves in the industry.

"I'm also amazed that Koffee With Karan has become my main claim to fame right now. At airports, restaurants and on the streets in any of the US cities I'm asked about Koffee only. I better direct another film quickly"

Khoti Kismat!

Hrithik Roshan

We were the first to tell you (on January 3) that Hrithik Roshan is having second thoughts about doing Zoya Akhtar's directorial debut Kismat Talkies. It's now official: Roshan Jr has opted out of Zoya's film.

As if that wasn't bad enough, co-star Kareena Kapoor too has given the project a miss.

Cold shoulder

Producer Ritesh Sidhwani (who runs Excel Entertainment along with partner and Zoya's brother Farhan Akhtar) had earlier told us that they would start filming in May 2007 as Kareena had given dates from then on, but after Hrithik started demanding changes in the script, Zoya went hunting for a new hero. It is learnt that she spoke to Akshay Kumar, but he too gave her the cold shoulder.

Now, we've learnt that Kareena has allotted the same dates to Socha Na Tha director Imtiaz Ali's next film. A source says, "Once Hrithik opted out, Kareena decided not to do the film either.

Also, she knew that the film wouldn't start on time, so she decided to utilise those dates for Imtiaz's film."

When contacted, Imtiaz excused himself from telling us when he is starting his film with Kareena. "I am sitting with some people. Let's talk later," he said.

Anxiety attack

Kareena Kapoor

The source adds, "Things haven't been easy for Zoya from the time she planned the film. She was supposed to make her debut with a film titled Luck — By Chance in 2004. Unfortunately, the film never took off.

Now, she is hopping mad. First, Hrithik took her for a ride. Now, Kareena's decision has sent her into a tizzy."

When contacted, Zoya did not categorically deny that Hrithik and Kareena were not doing Kismat Talkies.

But her tone clearly suggested that she was in no mood to defend the actors who have given her so much anxiety. She said, "Kareena's hasn't given me any dates yet, nor have we asked for them.

As of now, she is still doing the film. I haven't been informed otherwise. As for Hrithik, there is no status."

Zoya also did not endorse Sidhwani's statement that the film will go on floors in May. "We have not yet decided when we will start the film. I've been very busy with Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd," she added.

Not out yet

Kareena remained unavailable for comment, but a source close to her said, "Kareena's not walked out of the film.

Zoya hasn't told her anything about it yet. The film has been tentatively delayed, that's all."

Hrithik and Kareena acted together in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Yaadein, Mujhse Dosti Karoge and Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon.

During the making of Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon, rumour mills had gone into an overdrive claiming that there was an affair brewing between them.

The two stars then decided to avoid doing films together. Farhan Akhtar, who is on good terms with both actors, eventually cajoled them into doing his sister's film.

Meanwhile, Imtiaz's film with Kareena stars boyfriend Shahid Kapoor. That could be one of the reasons why Kareena decided to avoid Zoya's film.
