CNN-IBN Entertainment Editor, Rajeev Masand, spoke to director Mani Ratnam about the Cannes Film Festival and Bollywood going the international way.

Rajeev Masand: With us here at Cannes for the screening of his film Guru is veteran filmmaker Mani Ratnam.

Mani Ratnam: Thank you.

Rajeev Masand: Guru has been your first commercial success in Hindi after Yuva and Dil Se. Was that for you a big accomplishment in any way?

Mani Ratnam: No. I mean you make every film to reach a certain goal and in a way it's a relief. It's good to have your film screened. Seven films a year are being screened at Cannes, but I think we should do more than this. I think we should be in the main competition.

Rajeev Masand:People who have seen the film Guru say that there were some similarities to Dhirubhai Ambanis' life?

Mani Ratnam: Yes, now that people have seen the film, they know whether there were any similarities or not. I don't have to explain anything. When you talk of a biography, it has to be a proper biography. This film is fictional. It has got elements of real life and the spirit of real people. We are just trying to get a fictionalised story.

Rajeev Masand: What are we going to see next? Is Lajjo - the film announced with Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor - still on the cards?

Mani Ratnam: Yes, it's still at the scripting table. Once it falls into place, it will come onto the cards.

She may have dumped him for Aki Narula, but Kareena Kapoor is still Manish Malhotra's muse.

The designer has launched his new bridal couture collection with the actor and says, "Just because Kareena does one film with another designer doesn't mean that our relationship of so many years will be forgotten," informing that he plans to take his new creations to Dubai after a launch in Mumbai and Delhi.

Arbaaz Khan's secret dinner with Kareena & Shahid

By Subhash K. Jha, May 22, 2007 - 05:13 IST

It was at a dinner with his friends Kareena, Shahid and director Ahmed Khan that Arbaaz Khan was offered the role of the comic gangster in Fool 'n' Final.

"It's not a consciously funny role. In both Fool 'n' Final and Shoot-out At Lokhandwala I'll make people laugh," promises Arbaaz.

After five years of poker-faced spoil-sport roles, in Apoorva Lakhia's Shoot-out At LokhandwalaArbaaz is finally loosening up. He's cast as a cop who provides many light moments. "My character Javed Sheikh is a bit of a linguistic with a master-command over many languages. He keeps correcting everyone's language. Though he doesn't mean to be, he's quite comical likewise my character in Feroz Naidiadwala's Fool 'n' Final. I play this gang lord called Moscow Chikna who's always in a rage over goof-ups in his organization. He isn't consciously being funny but comes across as such to those around him."

He shared a great rapport with the whole Shootout team. "Sanjay Dutt and Suniel Shetty are friends, and actors I've looked up to. I'm on the right side of the law with them whereas most of the actors who played gangsters were naturally thrown together. I had to chase the gangster played by Rohit Roy. So I can't say we got a chance to like each other," says Arbaaz using the funny bones that he has lately discovered.

Arbaaz laughs recalling how he got the role in Fool & Final. "I was having dinner with Shahid, Bebo (Kareena) and Ahmed Khan when Ahmed said there was a character in his film only I could do… and his name was Moscow Chikna. It's hard to keep a straight face when your character has such a name. But in our films, anything is possible."

Arbaaz who has the disadvantage of being from a family of celebrities feels he has carved a distinct place for himself. "I've deliberately chosen to be different from the typical romantic-action heroes that Shah Rukh, Aamir and my brother Salman play. I knew I didn't stand a chance in that slot. So I started as an anti-hero a slot that other big heroes subsequently adopted. I feel I've made a lot of mistakes in my career and done roles that have finally done me more harm than good. But I've learnt from all my mistakes. Today I feel more confident. There're so many kinds of films being made. And I fit in comfortably into various slots."

The crown awaits the next Queen
25 May, 2007 l 0013 hrs ISTlAakanksha Naval-Shetye/TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Madhubala, Vyjanthimala, Meena Kumari, Hema Malini, Sridevi and Madhuri... these screen divas reigned as the undisputed queen bees of their times.

The millennium, however, witnessed a tug-of-war of sorts with the crown being juggled between Kajol, Rani Mukerji and Aishwarya Rai.

With Ash's marriage, Kajol's motherhood and Rani's hitting 30, the way is being paved to welcome the new numero uno.

And among the top contenders in this race are – Priyanka Chopra, who's scorching the screens, Kareena Kapoor, who's still waiting for the one big hit, and Vidya Balan, who's the new flavour post Parineeta.

Then, there're Esha Deol, Amrita Rao, Ayesha Takia, Kangana Ranaut, Mallika Sherawat and Katrina Kaif.

According to trade pundits, only a few actresses have what it takes to make it to the top. "Though many of them fit into the A league, they still have a long way to go. There's a dearth of the right combination – talent, commercial success and star pull," says trade analyst Komal Nahata, but adds that the industry's betting on Priyanka Chopra and Kareena Kapoor to be top contenders.

"However, at the moment, they are in the race more by default than anything else."

"Priyanka has a lot of money riding on her and she's hot property in the market. She was definitely the 'it' girl of 2006 – Don and Krrish. And while Kareena was once tipped to be the number one, she's pretty thanda right now. She desperately needs a hit," informs an industrywallah.

The other actresses in the running are Vidya Balan and Amrita Rao, feels trade analyst Taran Adarsh. "They display an amazing potential to make it to the top. Give them the right films and big banners and they can give many actresses a run for their money," he says. But, till then, it's reign on, Rani!

Kareena Kapoor
Trust Kareena Kapoor to take on various experiments including a stint in yoga. Kapoor, who is set to shoot for Yash Chopra's next - 'Tashan' with Saif Ali Khan in Ladakh next month, is seriously concentrating on the pranayama asana of yoga.

This came after she learned that it would keep her lungs in great shape at high altitudes. Seems that Kareena will go to any limits in order to keep herself physically fit.

B oney Kapoor, producer of the Shahid-Kareena starrer Milenge Milenge has been kept waiting by the couple for dates for over a year. Salman, who makes a special appearance in the film, had earlier shot for Milenge Milenge. But last summer, while on a tour to the US for a show, he took offence to Shahid's overenthusiasm of trying to correct his dance steps during the show rehearsals. He also called Boney and expressed his inability to continue working in his Shahid-starrer. If Salman's mood swing wasn't enough, more hindrances came up in the form of the need for a new co-star for K a r e e n a . Legendary actor Raaj Kumar's son, Panini was playing Kareena's beau in the film. When Shahid and Kareena saw the rushes of Milenge Milenge, they felt that Panini and Kareena made a very odd pair because he looked much older than Kareena. They requested Boney to bring in another actor in place of Panini but he refused to do that. This had lead to the off-screen couple completely ignoring Boney for months.

When Boney finally made a visit to the Manali sets of the untitled film they were doing, the off-screen cou ple refused to meet him.

Boney says, "I came to know that Shahid and Kareena were shooting in Manali So I decided to go and meet them. But, they refused to meet over payment issues."

Karan Johar
Kareena Kapoor

Kareena Kapoor may have a lot of oomph and grit, however what the lass has not had yet is a hit solo film to her credit. In fact the Kapoor gal hardly has a few films on hand this year. Kareena's most memorable film and role was that of 'pooh' in Karan Johar's Kabhie Khushi Kabhie Gham, unfortunately after that Karan and Kareena had a fall out and did not work with each other. Now the director and the actress have patched up and once more become good friends. Kareena has made it very clear to Karan as well as others that she really wants to do another Karan Johar film. After many failed attempts it seems Kareena may finally do a Karan Johar film to be directed by Siddharth Malhotra.

Earlier on too Kareena was slated to do a Karan Johar produced film to be directed by Tarun Mansukhani, but the deal fell through when Abhishek Bachchan refused to work with Kareena as she was his ex-fianc Karisma Kapoor's sister. Kareena's loss was Ash's gain and the role was snatched away by Ash. Kareena though refused to give up the thought of working under the Karan Johar banner. And it seems her persistence has finally paid off, but both Karan and Kareena don't want to talk about it so early as they feel that Kareena's chances may once again get jinxed. However Karan does admit that Siddharth who had assisted him in 'Kal Ho Na Ho' is writing the script of a film for him. Karan says "I can't confirm the leading lady as yet, as for the film it's an unusually written film. It's a one guy-one gal romantic film."

However for now Kareena will have to be content with working under the Karan Johar banner and not in a film directed by Karan himself. But who knows what the future holds…? Kareena has also appeared on Karan's candid chat show Koffee with Karan. A source says "Kareena is yet to sign on the dotted line, but she has been more or less finalized for the role." Well Kareena let's hope that this film will give your career that boost that it needs right now.

Lolo (called by her friends and family), is the first woman from the Kapoor clan to enter the film industry. Her parents Babita and Randir Kapoor were also famous Bollywood actors. Acting is in her blood stream but her film career took off with a rocky start in "Prem Qaidi" (1991). She was criticized for working with Govinda and for her masculine looks. After five long years, she became a genuine sex symbol in "Raja Hindustani" (1996), with the help of Bollywood fashion guru Manish Malhotra, who gave her an extreme make over. He gave her brown lenses, straightened and colored her hair and gave her softer makeup. Her new look gave her the confidence and the creditability as a Bollywood starlet, going on to win countless Filmfare Awards.
Why She's Sexy: Karisma is sexy because of her signature song "Sexy, Sexy, Sexy, Mujhe Log Bolain" from Khuddar (1994), if you've seen that you'll get the point.
Her Impact on Bollywood: She inspired younger sister Kareena to enter the film industry. After all, it is the family business.
Interesting Fact: Karisma dated Ajay Devgan, which is why she and Kajol had differences.
.

19. Kareena Kapoor: Mumbai born Kareena Kapoor (September 21, 1980), (aka Bebo) is Karisma Kapoor's younger sister. Her debut film "Refugee" (2000), with Abhishek Bachchan gave her a promising start as an actress. Her debut gave her creditability because she didn't portray a diva, instead she played a 17 year old Pakistani girl who wore traditional clothes. Her major films are "Asoka" (2001) with Shah Rukh Khan, "Ajnabee" (2001) with Bipasha Basu, Bobby Deol and Akshay Kumar and "Chameli" with Rahul Bose (2003). Recently, Kareena starred in 2004's sleeper hit "Hulchul", with Akshaye Khanna. In "Bewafa", (2005) she gives an amazing performance as the role of a younger sister, who agrees to marry her dead sister's husband, when her ex-boyfriend reenters her life and wants her back.
Why She's Sexy: She is sexy because she is 5'5", with Hazel eyes and has access to the Manish Malhotra makeover. She also shared an on-screen kiss with her current boyfriend Shaheed Kapoor, rivaling her sister's on-screen kiss with Aamir Khan in "Raja Hindustani" (1996).
Her Impact on Bollywood: She's growing as an actress by choosing the right films and critics are noticing her. She's a huge fan of Sridevi and hopes to mirror her acting style. She also uses her acting talent to inspire young girls to be like her.
Interesting Fact: India's censor board delayed the release of "Khushi" (2003), because of its numerous scenes showing Kareena's navel and stomach.

18. Preity Zinta: Simla born, Preity Zinta (January 31, 1974) grew up surrounded by the breathtaking Himalayan mountain range. She debuted in "Dil Se" (1998), and stole the limelight from Manisha Koirala with the song "Jiya Jale." She has a degree in psychology and writes a column for the BBC. She constantly shines on the silver screen, choosing meaningful roles.
Why She's Sexy: She is sexy because of her famous dimples and her twinkling eyes. With a name like Preity, you'd have to be pretty and she is.
Her Impact on Bollywood: She is known for speaking her mind and being true to herself. This is a welcome change from a lot of actresses who are phony.
Interesting Fact: She started out as an ad model for Lyril and Perks soap. No wonder she's known for being bubbly.

17. Sushmita Sen: Hyderabad born Sushmita Sen (November 19, 1974) grew up in Delhi and won the title of Miss Universe in 1994. Not only is she one of the most beautiful women in the Universe, she's the first Indian title holder. Soon after winning, Sushmita entered Bollywood with her debut film "Dastak" (1996), opening to mediocre reviews. Like many actresses before her, Sushmita's career came off to a rocky start. Bollywood critics nearly wrote her off as being just another pretty face and constantly compared her to Aishwarya Rai, who won the Miss World title the year before. She eventually proved herself as one of Bollywood's leading ladies in David Dhawan's "Biwi No. 1" (1999) with Salman Khan, "Sirf Tum" (1999) with Sanjay Kapoor, "Filhaal" with Tabbu (2002), "Main Hon Na" with Shah Rukh Khan (2004) and "Samay" with Sushant Singh (2004), "Bewafa" with Anil Kapoor (2005) and "Main Aisa Hi Hoon" with Ajay Devgan (2005).
Why She's Sexy: She is sexy because Sushmita, the Bengali bombshell, challenges traditional wisdom about beauty being only for those who are fair skinned. Standing at 5'10", she towers over most of her male co-stars.
Her Impact on Bollywood: She brought back the trend of having Bengali leading ladies on the silver screen.
Interesting Fact: Sushmita Sen has an adopted daughter named Renee, and has a degree in English Literature.

16. Kajol: Mumbai born Kajol Mukherjee Devgan (August 5, 1975), comes from a long line of Bollywood's leading ladies. She's a fourth generation actress; her mom is 60's sweetheart Tanuja (Rules: Pyaar Ka Super hit Formula, 2003), her maternal aunt is actress Nutan (Milan, 1967), and her grandmother Shobna Samarth was also a popular actress in her time. Apart from her impressive maternal lineage, her father Somu Mukherjee is a famous producer. Her debut "Bekhudi" (1992), gave a promising start to her career. She reigned at the box office for nearly a decade until her marriage to Ajay Devgan in 1999, and hasn't appeared in a film since "Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham" (2002).
Why She's Sexy: Kajol is sexy because she has a raw unpolished beauty different from the 90s glamour girls, Raveena Tandon and Manisha, who also entered the industry at the same time. She exemplifies a devastating combination of innocence and sensuality, which makes her a total babe.
Her Impact on Bollywood: She's had a string of hits, which catapulted her to dizzying heights with King Khan, Shah Rukh in "Baazigar" (1993), "Karan Arjun" (1995), "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge" (1995), "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai" (1998), and "Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham" (2002). Each mega hit encouraged audiences in India and abroad to flock to movie theaters.
Interesting Fact: She is best known for her role as Simran, who's personality is different from hers. Unlike Simran, Kajol could never agree to marry someone she's never met, which is why she found it natural to marry co-star Ajay Devgan. She has a daughter named Nysa and is currently gearing up to re-enter the industry.

15. Rani Mukherjee: Kolkata born Rani Mukherjee (March 21, 1978) comes from famous family like the Kapoor's. She's the daughter of director Ram Mukherjee and she is Kajol's cousin and also related to Kishore Kumar. Her first Bollywood break was in "Ghulam" (1998) with Aamir Khan. In "Ghulam", she received critical acclaim and created competition for cousin Kajol. They acted in Karan Johar's "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai" (1998) with Shah Rukh Khan, and she won the Filmfare Award for Best Newcomer. Her role in the film was small but her performance made an impact, which is consistent throughout her career.
Why She's Sexy: Rani is sexy because of her trademark husky voice. She's also known for her green eyes and her captivating smile, stealing the hearts of Bollywood moviegoers.
Her Impact on Bollywood: She's a gifted actress and has held her own with Bollywood heavy-duties, Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan and is constantly stealing the limelight from Box office queens Preity Zinta, Kajol and Kareena Kapoor. Her most challenging role was in "Black" (2005), where she played a blind and deaf girl, modeled after Helen Keller. She is constantly receiving Filmfare Awards with her natural performances and is the current generation's answer to Jaya Bhaduri.
Interesting Fact: Rani Mukherjee replaced Twinkle in 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' (1998), Mahima in 'Hadh Kar Di Apne' (2000) and Pooja Bhatt in 'Ghulam' (1998). She also surprised ace choreographer/director Farah Khan with her dancing ability in "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai" in the song "Koi Mil Gaya," after everyone had doubts about her dancing ability. Rani Mukherjee is a trained Odissi dancer, a dance style originating from Orissa performed by Temple dancers
