Another chapter in Amitabh Bachchan-Shah Rukh Khan supposed rivalry

08th May 2007 14.01 IST
By Agencies

Another chapter has been reportedly added in the supposed rivalry that exists between Bollywood mega superstar Amitabh Bachchan and superstar Shah Rukh Khan .

Bachchan has reportedly refused to shoot for Ravi Chopra 's film Bhootnath unless the director reworks the script more to his liking because he feels SRK's cameo in the film is almost as long and important as his lead role.

"Amitabh Bachchan has not yet shot for the film. We are facing some problems with dates," says Vivek Sharma, the film's director, "The film is delayed for three months due to Amitji's other commitments and his son's wedding. But Mr. Bachchan's professionalism is legendary and I have seen how much SRK respects Mr. Bachchan. We will start shooting in July."

However, reports quote reliable sources as saying, "There is definitely some tension. The film was supposed to be shot in December 2006. Amitji has not given the green signal to the shooting. He has asked the producer-director team to rework the script because in spite of being projected as an Amitabh Bachchan film, Shah Rukh Khan has an equally strong role in terms of length and prominence. That's the real reason for the film's delay!"

The Bachchan-SRK standoff seems to hit headlines everyday in Indian media.

The Big B-SRK enmity started big time in 2004 at the Zee Cine Awards function in Dubai when Bachchan was given a seat in the 14th row a fact that so incensed his friend politician Amar Singh that he made a huge scene.

SRK, in perhaps a classic example of what is politically incorrect, described Amar Singh's behavior as 'goondagardi' causing the vibes between him and Amitabh to turn negative, despite Jaya Bachchan earlier having referred to SRK as her 'son'.

Following the incident, Bachchan has been terse when speaking about SRK in public. The bad vibes were later aggravated by intense professional rivalry because of SRK's decision to act in the remake of Don and anchor KBC.

More recently, SRK referred to Amar Singh as a 'darinda' while anchoring Zee Cine Awards in Malaysia, which seems to have severed any remaining strands of friendship.

Consequently, SRK did not figure on the guest list for the Abhishek Bachchan – Aishwarya Rai wedding.

Khans Boycott??

[9 May 2007>

Shah Rukh Khan, the Badshah of bollywood, has decided to boycott the International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA) this year which is being held next month in Yorkshire, England. The main reason behind this decision is stated to be Big B, who is the brand ambassador of the awards, though Shah Rukh has cited his children's holiday as the reason behind his move. Last year too, Shah Rukh had not attended the function held in Dubai and the reason cited was his vacationing with family in London.

As a source reveals, ' S R K was royally snubbed when he was not invited to the Abhi- Ash wedding. Also, Amitabh, Abhishek and Aishwarya will be present as the Bachchan family brand, thus stealing the limelight from other stars. It's no wonder that they are wary of attending. Even the real reason behind his not attending last year's function in Dubai was the cold war between him and Amitabh. Karan Johar had to organize two music release functions for Kabhie Alvida Na Kehna in London and at IIFA in Dubai to appease both SRK and Bachchan.'

Shah Rukh Khan's non-attendance has sent the Wizcraft, the entertainment company that manages the function, into a tizzy as the King Khan is hugely popular in the U K and his absence will certainly adversely affect the ticket sales. The USP of such functions are the presence of big stars and their live performance on stage but after SRK's refusal and Salman Khan yet not confirming his participation, the company is finding very hard to promote the event.

Earlier, SRK and Sallubhai were upset about not being invited to the wedding and had decided to boycott the award function but according to sources now Salman is reconsidering his decision and might perform with Chi Chi. But he has not yet confirmed anything. Meanwhile, the maker of Krrish, Rakesh Roshan, has confirmed that his son Hrithik Roshan will be participating in the award ceremony but will not perform at the stage.

To make up for the absence of Shah Rukh, the organizers are roping in some international celebrities to attend the function including Colin Firth and Sienna Miller. To make the function more interesting, Indian stars will also participate in a charity cricket match to be played between Yorkshire XI and IIFA XI.

Farah pulls off a coup!

By Manisha Vardhan, MovieTalkies.com, 7 May 2007

The last guy who managed to do this was Manmohan Desai. He roped in the biggest stars of that time for a song sequence in his film Naseeb. You name them, and they were there in the film. And now it's choreographer-turned director Farah Khan who has pulled of a coup of sorts. She has roped in some 30 stars, including the three Khans, Salman, Saif, Shahrukh and Sanjay Dutt. And this entire galaxy of stars, which h includes the likes of Rani Mukherjee, Vidya Balan, Preity Zinta, Kajol, Priyanka Chopra, Govinda, Shilpa Shetty etc, will be seen in a single item number in Farah's forthcoming film, Om Shanti Om.

Farah admits that Desai's John Johnny Janardhan is the inspiration behind this number. Incidentally, Farah's film will see Deepika Padukone, daughter of former badminton player Prakash Padukone, make her debut.

SRK in Casablanca remake?

By Manisha Vardhan, MovieTalkies.com, 9 May 2007

Casablanca. It is one of the most enduring romantic films to come out of Hollywood. And if news is to be believed, then we will soon see a Hindi remake of the black and white classic set against the World War II background. The man behind the remake is T Rajeevnatham.

Apparently, actor Shah Rukh Khan has been roped in to play the lead role made immortal by Humphery Bogart. The Indian Ilsa Lund played by Ingrid Bergman, however, is yet to be decided. Music director AR Rahman too has been signed on for the project. But before one gets too excited about the whole project, it would be worthwhile to remember that Rajeevnathan had earlier made news when he announced a film on Mother Theresa with Paris Hilton. The project was subsequently shelved. So, let's wait and watch.

Khans gang up

By Manisha Vardhan, MovieTalkies.com, 5 May 2007

Post the Ash-Abhishek wedding, one has seen the two Khans—Salman and Shah rukh bonding as never before. Old issues all buried, the two Khans are back on friendly terms and how. They seem to be making up for lost time, with frequent late night parties at Mannat, Shahrukh's house, or just over coffee.

And the latest entrant into this gang is Sanjay Dutt. Guess, it does help that all three of them live in Bandra, in close proximity to each other.

Kajol -SRK to sizzle again?

Arnab Banerjee

The news is finally out – two of the hottest actors from Bollywood who set the silver screen on fire with their on-screen chemistry - have given their nods to their favorite director and best friend Karan Johar's next film based on a story that revolves around post 9/11 trauma by an Indian couple. We are talking about Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan of course, whose screen pairing would warm the cockles of many a heart.

While it's a safely guarded secret that the Johar camp has been trying hard not to leak out, murmurs from the Devgun household have sent strong signals of the unconventional bahu doing not one but three projects, her husband's home production, You. Me and Hum Raj Kumar Santoshi's Ramayana and Karan Johar's untitled venture.

That's quite a handful for this full time mother and now part time actor.

What made her sign on the dotted line? Was it the urge to get back to the arc lights as her daughter Nysa is growing up and thus leaves her with more free time on her hands?

While it's a safely guarded secret that the Johar camp has been trying hard not to leak out, murmurs from the Devgun household have sent strong signals of the unconventional bahu Karan Johar's untitled venture. Insiders reveal that it was partly because 'Saying 'No' to Karan is not only impossible, it's also painful' and her decision to face the camera is also slightly selfish and personal. 'I'd get to spend more time with him (Ajay Devgun),' is what this fiery actor is supposed to have confided in a friend.

Will the Johar film also star any of the four Bachchans? The hot debate whether any one of them would actually agree to work in the film also starring their pet hate SRK has exhausted all possibilities with virtually every angle explored as to how, why and what would KJ do to keep his best buddy happy and yet make sure that the First Family in tinselville he is so close to doesn't get offended - A tough decision on his part undoubtedly.

That may be something that KJ must be working hard to work out – come to think of it – he must be actually spending more sleepless nights mulling over it than writing the script for the film? But is it too much of a query to ask whether Kajol's cousin Rani Mukherjee(and his current favorite) will also be a part of it?

"There are several roles which require many competent actors to portray some strong characters but besides the lead pair, no one else has been finalized," confirms one source from the Johar camp.

Whatever may be the outcome, the result should be worth the wait now that the only star pair presently which could ensure a grand initial at the box office and command a successful come back after a gap of six years, has decided to get back together again. Their last film together was the 2001 release dharma Productions' Kabhie Khushi Kanbhi Gham.

Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in Karan Johar's next film

Posted on 09 May 2007 (EST)

Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol will feature in Karan Johar's next film that follows the travails of an Indian couple post 9/11.

09 May 2007 (Sawf News) - Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol will feature in Karan Johar's next film that follows the travails of an Indian couple post 9/11.

Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan first starred together in the romantic family drama Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), a film that was so successful it continues to run uninterrupted till date in a theater in Bombay!

Their last film together Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gam (2001), produced and directed by Karan Johar, was a huge success too.

Kajol is currently working on U, Me Aur Hum in which she is paired opposite her husband Ajay Devgan, who is also the director.

In addition she has signed up for Raj Kumar Santoshi's Ramayan.

A few days earlier she had told Bombay Times she would not sign any more films.

"I can't handle any more assignments at the same time," she said.

According to an HT insider the dusky 31-year-old found it hard to turn down Karan Johar with whom she enjoys an excellent professional rapport. Besides, Kajol feels, while taking on more work may keep her away from her daughter Nysa it will allow her to spend more time with her husband Ajay Devgan.

Interestingly, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gam (2001) featured Amitabh Bachchan, another close friend of Karan Johar besides Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan.

However, in view of a simmering professional rivalry between Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan it is moot if he or any of the Bachchans will feature in the new film.

"There are several roles which require many competent actors to portray some strong characters but besides the lead pair, no one else has been finalized," confirms an HT source.

Shah Rukh to boycott IIFA in England

09th May 2007 22.35 IST
By Aparajita Ghosh

Just like last year, Shah Rukh Khan will not be attending this year's International Indian Film Academy Awards in Yorkshire. Is Amitabh Bachchan the reason behind it?

Shah Rukh boycotted IIFA in Dubai last year because he was holidaying with his kids in London at that time. This year, too, the IIFA in Yorkshire is coinciding with the school vacations of SRK's kids. And the superstar is again thinking of skipping the event for the sake of his kids.

However, it is being speculated among circles in tinsel town that SRK is boycotting the event because Amitabh Bachchan is IIFA's brand ambassador. The last time SRK attended IIFA was in Amsterdam in 2005 when things were pretty hunky dory between the King Khan and the Big B.

SRK's absence from the three-day event in June will take the glitz out of IIFA because he is very popular among the Asian crowds in England.

But what we wonder is that if SRK was holidaying in London last year when IIFA was in Dubai, why can't he holiday this time again in England and attend the event too.

SRK knows the answer better.

By the way, it is confirmed that this year's IIFA will see the presence of other big Bollywood stars like Abhishek Bachchan , Aishwarya Rai , Hrithik Roshan Saif Ali Khan and Emraan Hashmi . Salman Khan and Govinda are also likely to be there.

But SRK will certainly be missed.

Stage fight!

The Badshah and Shehenshah of Bollywood are pitted against each other once again!

Ashwini Deshmukh and Kunal M Shah

The Amitabh Bachchan- SRK divide gets more pronounced with each passing day. There is another example to prove it. Big B's much-talked about World Tour One Amazing Night will now have some stiff competition. And no prizes for guessing from who! SRK will embark on a World Tour titled Temptations.

Bachchan's show is slotted for mid-2008 whereas SRK's is scheduled for April 2008. It seems too much of a co-incidence to have two major Bollywood stage shows lined up so close to each other. Team Bachchan comprising beta and bahu Abhi-Ash will be pitted against Squad SRK's Rani Mukherji, Preity Zinta and Priyanka Chopra (Squad SRK is still being finalised).

Team Bachchan

Date: Mid-2008
Place: USA, Europe and Middle East.
Company: Wizcraft
Actors: Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai.

Hrithik Roshan and Priyanka Chopra have already walked out of the show after it was postponed from September this year to next year.

Organisers Speak

Sabah Joseph, MD, Wizcraft says, "Yes, we are in the process of co-ordinating the schedules and the dates have been fixed. But we would not like to share the details and will make an announcement later."
However, Amitabh Bachchan has earlier spoken to the media saying the show has been postponed due to the Abhishek-Aishwarya Rai wedding.

Squad SRK

Date: April 2008
Place: USA, UK and Canada
Company: Morani Brothers
Actors: SRK's wish list consists of Priyanka Chopra (she has walked out of Team Bachchan), Preity Zinta and Rani Mukherji.

Organisers Speak

Kareem Morani of the Morani Brothers, the company that will be responsible for Shah Rukh's concert says, "We are still working on the tour and not much is finalised yet. But Priyanka and Rani are likely to be part of the tour. As far as actors are concerned, apart from Shah Rukh none are confirmed as of now. It will be 40-day tour. We had scheduled the tour for October this year but Shah Rukh has postponed it to April 2008.
