BOLLYWOOD superstar Shahrukh Khan, who was in Doha to mark the opening of ICICI Bank's branch at the Qatar Financial Centre (QFC), wowed all those gathered at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel on Friday afternoon, with his disarming smile, ready wit and down-to-earth demeanour.
Playing his part as brand ambassador of ICICI Bank to perfection, Khan repeatedly plugged his client's products and services right throughout the two-hour interactive session which was peppered with songs, dances and give-away gifts.
The session was held as part of celebrations marking the inauguration of the bank in Qatar.
Inviting the 600-strong audience to "ask any question, you want, personal or professional", Khan answered all queries thrown at him in his inimitable style.
His tongue-in-cheek humour, no-holds barred manner and intrinsic ability to laugh at himself, endeared him even more to his fans, in what was his second appearance in Qatar; he had performed several years ago at the Doha Cinema.
Khan asked a member of the audience, who had come without his wife, to call her from his mobile and spoke to the lady who, needless to state was more than pleasantly surprised.
He then proposed, in jest, to a fan, encouraged a teenage girl to dance along with him, inquired of a student regarding his future career plans and proved his remarkable skills of interacting with people which undoubtedly helped him make the Kaun Bangea Crorepati television quiz programme a hugely popular show.
Khan was at his charming best as he invited fans to join him on stage, delivered dialogues from his films and explained how he managed to juggle his career and family life.
The Badshah of Bollywood emotionally choked a bit when a journalist of this newspaper thanked him for praying over his daughter, for a speedy recovery, several years ago.
Reminiscing that he had lost both his parents at an early age, Khan said the prayer was one that his father always recited to him when he was a little boy.
Then with all the consummate skills of an actor par excellence, Khan switched emotions, challenging everyone in the audience to bank a million dollars each with ICICI if they wanted him back in Doha for a repeat performance.
Before Khan took to the stage, popular Bollywood singer Shaan impressed the special invitees with hit Hindi film songs. The singer re-appeared towards the end of the show for a second equally entertaining performance. TV host of the Indian Idol show Mini Mathur compered the event.
Indian Ambassador Dr George Joseph was among the special guests invited to light the traditional lamp to mark the opening of ICICI's branch, accompanied by senior bank officials and Qatar Financial Centre executives.
