Shah Rukh For the Dummies!

Shah Rukh had an 'out of body' experience last week on unveiling his wax statue at Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum in London.

Says SRK, "It's difficult to describe what one goes through when such a thing happens. It was amusing, weird and a humbling experience.

I had an idea of what my statue would look like, as I had been shown the head the night before. They needed me to be there to touch up the skin tone, but it's a strange feeling when one is more used to seeing two-dimensional pictures. The statue is exactly the same, especially the eyes and the eyebrows, which look very real."

At the unveiling, the actor made time to attend to one of his kiddie fans – a mentally challenged boy who had driven down from the outskirts of London to catch a glimpse of the star.

"I believe that people who are physically and mentally challenged are very close to Allah. It's strange when people like them see my films and feel that I have made them better. It's very touching and very humbling. Recently, a 16-year old paralysed girl from USA felt that she started walking because of me. She flew down with her entire family to meet me.

Had met her while I was performing for my world tour the first time.

She had started walking out of her own will; she feels it was because of me. I find it strange, but it's a beautiful experience.

If they find happiness looking at me, I feel gifted in a nice way," he says, with conviction and without a trace of modesty.

Itne Paas Kitne Door!

Ever since Shah Rukh Khan took over Amitabh Bachchan's hot seat in Kaun Banega Crorepati. The superstar has been a target of media and is being compared with Amitabh Bachchan. The scenario has become so intense that both SRK and Big B have now become pucca rivals so much that the two are working together in Ravi Chopra's forthcoming film Bhootnath but the truth is that they never came face to face nor exchanges a single dialogue! When contacted Ravi Chopra for knowing the truth, he laughs, "Yeah! It's true but the fact is not what the media do understand. Infact the script is such that two actor never come together. The movie revolves around Mr. Bachchan who plays a ghost and Shah Rukh cannot see him, except a child as seen in upteen movies like Chota Chetan or Bhoot Unkle. Director Vivek Sharma reveals, "There is nothing wrong between Bachchan Sahab and Shah Rukh. They are goods friends as usual. It's only the movie has no scene bringing the two legends in one frame."

Pakistan's Javed Sheikh in OM SHANTI OM

By Abid, Bollywood Trade News Network

The cast of Farah Khan's next project after MAIN HOON NA, OM SHANTI OM, seems to be getting bigger and better. Apart from Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and Shreyas Talpade, there are a host of special appearances from the likes of Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Rishi Kapoor, Subhash Ghai, Karan Johar, etc., most of them playing themselves.

However it now seems that Pakistan's Javed Sheikh (SHIKHAR, JAAN-E-MANN), who was last seen in the recent hit NAMASTEY LONDON, also plays an important role in the film. No, he is not playing the big Pakistani star that he is, but a leading star from the psychedelic 70s.

The Red Chillies Entertainment banner OM SHANTI OM is expected to release at the fag end of the year .

RANG DE BASANTI in CHAK DE INDIA ?
Abid, Bollywood Trade News Network

View Star Gold Organized Comedy Honors - Picture GalleryYash Raj's CHAK DE INDIA , starring Shah Rukh Khan and Vidya Malavade, has been kept away from the media glare. Except for the fact that it is based on India's National game hockey, and that SRK plays the coach of a women's team, not much is known or heard. The only official communique from Yash Raj has been in the form of the film's posters, available on their official website.

However, a lot of clips from the movie are available on Shah Rukh Khan's fan sites, specially from the Melbourne shoot of CHAK DE INDIA, in a stadium. One of the clips has an interesting sequence, whereby Shah Rukh Khan is seen dancing with the Melbourne based 'desi' dance troop, 'jhanak', to an inspirational/patriotic number from last years 45 crore earner, RANG DE BASANTI. The dance troop was specially invited to entertain the packed crowd in the stadium.

It will be interesting to see if this sequence is incorporated in CHAK DE INDIA (after the editing), once the Shimit Amin directed movie releases on August 10

Who has a better recall proposition?

Enkayaar, Bollywood Trade News Network

A Cricketer or a Film Star! Inspite of the fact that Hero Honda as a company has been sponsoring various cricket tournaments its brand ambassador even during the hot shot matches has been a Hrithik Roshan underlining the fact that he has got a much larger recall value than a cricketer. Just a few years ago, there was this advertisement released where all the cricketers, including Sachin and Dravid were included in the part of the campaign, and had much of footage, but an Amitabh Bachchan was included in the advertisement and he had become a more visible face of the campaign than all the other cricketing stars packaged together. Who can forget the Coke series of Aamir Khan, though Sourav Ganguly was the brand ambassador for Coke as well? It is altogether a different matter that when he became a brand ambassador for Pepsi, the campaign was designed that sort of emotionally touched the chord with the viewer about Sourav's untimely ouster from the cricket team. It is altogether a different matter that now the Indian public has again forgot the dada, but an Aamir Khan still rules the roost and commands the highest premium.

The film stars are preferred choice over the sports stars, because they have longevity over their sports brethren and their fortunes do not have the tendency to oscillate and fluctuate from a match to match but the same can be experienced in rare cases from a Friday to Friday. Even then, this kind of aversion, which is being experienced against the present crop of cricketers endorsing the products, is seldom experienced against a film star. The film stars drop out only if they are not giving a consistent performance over a period of year. During the din before the current world cup, there was a din among the companies to lap up cricket stars, but the unceremonious debacle of the Indian team has meant that the stars have come back into the reckoning and Shah Rukh Khan has emerged as the biggest beneficiary. The choice between a cricketer and a film star would tilt towards a film star owing to his brand recognition on a larger scale, but the economics of hiring a star is what tilts the balance in favour of the cricketer. However, if one were to undertake a comparative study of the endorsements that are done of the international products, and the national products and co-relating it with the film stars and cricketers, it would be found that in 9 out of 10 cases the film star would be the preferred choice to endorse an international product, be it the cosmetics, or the toiletries, and leaving aside the soft drinks. Take the example of Reid & Tailor, endorsed by AB, Tag Heur watches, Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra, the car segment while the Indian car Maruti is endorsed by a common man, Santro piggy backs on Shah Rukh Khan's back. The list is endless. What tilt the balance in favour of the film stars are their salability and the consistency in performance. It is the salability factor as a result of which Neetu Chandra of TRAFFIC SIGNAL fame has been selected as the brand ambassador of UNICEF, while this opportunity eludes the cricket star. Even in the social endorsement the film stars rule, and wherever a cricket comes, he would be as a team with the film stars. The boom in the celebrity endorsement has been fueled by the advent of Internet, which is satiating the thirst of the Indian public about them, and it also promotes the familiarity with the star, which is difficult to attain with a cricketer as the viewer is able to communicate with the film star in the anonymity of a cinema hall and the same is not attainable with a cricket star.

Besides, the film star is able to spread his fragrance around, so one finds that the film stars also endorse personalized fragrances, which has not happened in the case of a cricket star so far, while Lata Mangeshkar, Amitabh Bachchan and a Shah Rukh Khan have already launched a personal fragrance. The launch of a personalized fragrance is the process whereby one can have a control over the image of the self and is also a potent medium to announce the power that the stars command.

SRK's girl says no to Salman

Model-turned-actress Deepika Padukone, has politely declined playing Salman Khan's love interest in Boney Kapoor's next film (a remake of the Telegu hit Pokhiri).

She presently plays the female lead opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Om Shanti Om, Apparently Deepika backed out at the eleventh hour in a very unprofessional manner.

Sources report Boney kept waiting for her at a suburban preview theatre for the screening of the original film, so that she could get a feel of her role. But then, her business manager called him 15 minutes before the show and said she was not interested in doing the film.

"A screening was supposed to happen but it didn't, as Deepika informed me in advance that she couldn't do it. I wanted this film to be her next after Om Shanti Om and I had categorically told her that. But she told me it won't be possible as she was committed to other projects," says Boney.

Boney continues, "I have shortlisted two new faces and I will soon announce the name of the girl who will play the lead opposite Salman. Shooting starts in June."

Deepika had a different story to tell though, "I only met Mr Kapoor once, and all I was told is that the film is a remake of a South film, Salman will be the hero and that he would produce it. Beyond that, no details were discussed. I was told that they would get back to me about the screening."

Deepika avers that she has been a model for quite some time and is known to be extremely professional.

"The screening was supposed to happen provided both parties agreed on a time and date. Later, they themselves told me that there was no point in arranging a screening if I wasn't doing the film. Mr Kapoor's secretary Shyam coordinated the entire thing. If there was a miscommunication from his end, I don't know."

Rumours of his wedding to Katrina Kaif drove 500-strong crowd deewana

Keeping 'em Guessing: Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif

Yesterday morning, a crowd of around 500 persons collected outside Galaxy Apartments, Salman Khan's Bandra residence. The crowds were excitedly discussing Salman's marriage to girlfriend Katrina Kaif.

According to the rumours, the duo had gotten married in a hush-hush ceremony on Tuesday. The crowds wanted a glimpse of the happy couple.

Says a source from the film industry, "The industry has been abuzz with speculation about the Salman-Katrina marriage ever since the Abhi-Ash wedding date had been announced.

Some people even thought that Salman and Katrina would announce their wedding date a day before or the same day as the Abhi-Ash wedding (April 20) and upstage their event." And that's where the wedding rumours apparently started.

Kat's in Dubai

When contacted, Katrina Kaif burst into laughter. "I think everyone has gone mad! I couldn't have got married yesterday! I have been shooting for Abbas-Mustan's Race with Akshaye Khanna in Dubai for the last three days.

Right now, I have just come back from shopping with my sister Isabel who is with me in Dubai, and we are having a gala time shopping and enjoying the food."

Wait a little longer

According to a source in Star Plus, "Everyone knows that Salman and Katrina have shot for KBC3 with Shah Rukh but what no one knows is that this episode was planned to coincide with the Bachchan-Rai wedding.

Shah Rukh Khan's KBC3 starring Katrina and Salman will be aired on April 19 (just a day before the wedding).

It will be one of the most viewed shows on air and will garner high TRPs as Salman and Katrina together have never come on TV for a show.

So while the media will be busy trying to catch what's happening on the wedding that day, the viewers will be sitting at home watching KBC3."

When asked about her return to Mumbai, Kat says, "I am coming back at the end of the month," says Katrina. That rules out marriage for Sal-Kat at least on April 20!

Sharing the stage with Shah Rukh

Reader Vikram had a chance of meeting Shah Rukh Khan during the 2004 leg of the superstar's Temptations tour.

During a concert in Dortmund, Germany, SRK spotted Vikram in the huge crowd and called him on stage. He asked him some personal questions, since he was from Delhi, where SRK hails from.

Backstage with Shah Rukh, Preity

Then SRK told him the theme, an on-stage enactment of a scene from Devdas.

He asked Vikram to repeat some dialogues after him and gave him Pepsi (pretending it was alcohol, for the audience's benefit), and had one for himself -- after which SRK broke the bottle on his own forehead!

Immediately after that, Vikram asked him discreetly whether he was hurt or blood was coming out from his head. Then they danced on the Challak challak song from Devdas.

That's not all, SRK gave Vikram a 4.5 litre bottle of Black Label Whiskey autographed by him, and told him to open that on his wedding day.

If you encounter/meet/see film or television personalities and photograph them, please scan the photographs and mail the pictures to us. We will feature the best images right here on Rediff Movies

Credit for SRK's success goes to the superstar himself: Barry John

Veteran theatre personality Barry John has uprooted himself and his school from Delhi and moved to Mumbai, the heart of the Hindi film industry, because the capital doesn't offer enough opportunities to do well.

Excerpts from an interview:

"Theatre activity has sunk to an all-time low; television offers few and uninspiring opportunities; and film is virtually non-existent. So, just as my students have little option but to migrate to Mumbai to improve their prospects, the same now applies to me," John told in an interview.

Superstar Shah Rukh Khan is also a product of his training school but John refuses to take the credit for the actor's delivering skills.

Q: Shah Rukh has credited you with teaching him all he knows about acting. Do you agree?

A: On the basis of my own education and experience, I do not believe that any one - teacher or mentor - can be credited with delivering every skill or quality that an actor possesses. Acting is a complex alchemy of inner and outer experiences, awareness and skills that are drawn from many sources, and then filtered through the unique persona of the actor. And the learning never stops.

I imagine that I had a profound impact on SRK's formative years as an actor, which are vital in laying positive foundations, fostering aptitude and self-confidence. His training was more of a traditional apprenticeship than a formal schooling, and he brought to it his trademark energy, hard work, intelligence and humour.

The credit for the phenomenally successful development and management of his career goes to the superstar himself.
