Hey ma!

Dharmendra and Hema Malini will not dance together, certainly not with Bobby Deol in tow

Mumbai Mirror Bureau

Hema Malini with Dharmendra

It's a gathering second only to a marriage out there at Film City today. An entire line-up of stars are there, all of them dancing for Farah Khan's Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Om Shanti Om. Today Farah will be teaching the turns to Rekha, Sanjay Dutt, Saif Ali Khan, Dharmendra, Bobby Deol — all at one go.

Of course, Farah would have liked Hema Malini to be there too in the vintage line-up, especially since was an important part of the original 'John Johnny Janardan' in Naseeb, the song from which hers is inspired. But that was not to be. With Dharmendra and Hema Malini having decided not to work with each other, Farah was, most probably, forced to choose between the two. And with Bobby Deol shaking a leg for the same song too, it would have got rather awkward to have Dharmendra, Bobby and Hema doing the twists and turns together like one big happy family.

Bobby Deol

In fact, unit insiders have been heard saying that there was a request to Farah to not attempt the bringing together of the three. As for Farah, no doubt she wants to shoot in a pleasant rather than a charged atmosphere. So, Dharmendra and Bobby, it will be. Period.

Incidentally, the other star of Naseeb, Amitabh Bachchan is also not participating in the Shah Rukh Khan-led mega-song. He has begged off, citing date problems… Farah did try to contact Aamir Khan too, to add to the line-up. But Aamir was 'not reachable'.

'I am already planning a new film with Pakistani and Indian actors together. It is a sentimental film about relationship between India and Pakistan" - Jawed Sheikh

By IndiaFM News Bureau, April 14, 2007 - 02:50 IST

He is the Amitabh Bachchan of Pakistani cinema. Four films old in Hindi cinema and Jawed Sheikh is already getting noticed for his character roles in Bollywood as well. The recent one being in Namastey London where he played Upen Patel's father. "At my age I am playing character roles. So of course I relate to it and I am thoroughly enjoying it", replies the soft-spoken superstar of the neighbouring country.

His next film happens to be Apne which gets the entire Deol clan together. "For a change I am not playing anybody's father in this film. I play a media mogul based in Canada who is a friend of Dharamji. I have a very good character in this film. I thoroughly enjoyed working with the Deol family. They are very professional and humble humans", says Jawed.

But Jawed sounds really excited about getting to work with two films under Shah Rukh Khan's Red Chillies banner. "Farah had choreographed a song in Jaaneman, that's where she saw me and liked my work. She also told me that we might work together. And because of Farah Khan I got Red Chillies first film My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves. Director E Niwas was discussing about this character with the writers and Farahji told the whole team that they should take Jawed Shiekh for the role. I play a police inspector called Khan.

It's a different role for me and I am enjoying it. The film stars a new boy Nikhil Dwivedi with Amrita Rao and Anupam Kher."

With the second Red Chillies film Om Shanti Om he gets to share screen space with Shah Rukh. "In the first half of the film I am playing a superstar of 1978; someone like Rajesh Khanna from that era. Shah Rukh plays a struggling actor in the film. Post-interval after his rebirth he becomes my son. That is the present day which opens in 2007. I am thankful to Farah Khan and Shah Rukh Khan who gave me the opportunity to work in their film. I am so proud that I am doing a film like Om Shanti Om. The whole team is marvelous."

However Jawed's Bollywood connection goes two decades back. "It started from 1986 when I had got an offer to do Khoon Bhari Maang with Rekhaji and Sonu Walia. I was signed for that film. Before the mahurat something happened in my family and I could not do that film. Kabir Bedi was roped in for the role later. Exactly after 20 years later I came here to record music for my film Yeh Dil Aap Ka Hua. At that time Mr John Mathew Mathan saw me on NDTV and he approached me and offered me a role in his film Shikhar. That was a turning point for me to come back to Bollywood. After Shikhar, I did Jaaneman and Namestey London. Now there are a couple of more in the line."

I have made my own film in India as a producer, director and actor called Khule Aasman Ke Niche. I shot that film in Bombay for forty days last December.

So now that he is doing a lot of films in India, is he cutting down on Pakistani cinema? Jawed explains, "Apart from acting in a lot of Hindi cinema I have made my own film in India as a producer, director and actor called Khule Aasman Ke Niche. I shot that film in Bombay for forty days last December.

Also I recorded all my music here. Ganesh Acharya is my choreographer for the film. I am doing all my post-production work here. I have got all Indian singers in the film. And this would be the first Pakistani film releasing in India simultaneously with a worldwide release. That's the reason why I have to be here for sometime and cut down on projects there."

Indian cinema is far superior to Pakistani cinema. And I don't hitch to say that.

Ask him if working for Indian cinema is any different as compared to Pakistani cinema and Jawed doesn't get diplomatic with his reply "Oh yes. There is a lot of difference. Indian cinema is too good compared to Pakistani cinema.

And I don't hitch to say that. Indian cinema is far superior to Pakistani cinema. I am learning different techniques here and that is why even I am doing my film here. That was the reason I brought my unit from Pakistan to India and the Indian and Pakistani crew worked together for forty days without any accidents. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience. My crew learnt a lot from the Indian crew. I am already planning a new film with Pakistani and Indian actors together. It is a sentimental film about relationship between India and Pakistan. I have already registered a title for it called Dil Toh Ek Hai. And I am also trying to release a few of my Pakistani films in India".

Has he gained more recognition after working in Hindi films? "Yes, of course. Definitely I have gained a lot of recognition. Hindi cinema has made me a globally known face", Jawed replies honestly.

Which Pakistani films has he worked in recently? "There is this film called Ek Din Laut Ke Aaonga that is releasing on 27th April. It stars Indian television actress Nausheen Ali Sardar with Pakistani actor Humayun Saeed. The film was shot in Hyderabad in Ramoji Film City and also in Bombay. The entire film was made in India. People in Pakistan have seen the trailer and they like it. There is another film called Lahore produced by a new producer Sunil Sharma and directed by Sanjay, they are planning to shoot in Pakistan also. There are one or two more projects but aren't finalized as yet. There are plenty more producers, directors who are ready to come to Bombay. Couple of them are already here and planning their film."

There is one company from Pakistan who has signed a MOU with Yash Raj. Yashraj will be releasing their film in Pakistan and Pakistani films will be released here through them.

Finally what does he feel about the ban on screening of Indian films in Pakistan? Jawed expresses his disappointment saying, "I don't really understand the ban there. But three Indian films were released in Pakistan recently - Bride and Prejudice, Taj Mahal, Mughal-e-azam. Before this there were two films Noor Jahan and Kashish. And I have heard that there are plenty more to be released like Kaafila to be directed by Amtojie Mann starring Sunny Deol and Sana from Pakistan. Sana is the heroine in my film Khule Aasman Ke Niche too. There is one company from Pakistan who has signed a MOU with Yash Raj. Yashraj will be releasing their film in Pakistan and Pakistani films will be released here through them."

What's Myanmar's capital? Naypyidaw

TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ SATURDAY, APRIL 14, 2007 03:26:20 AM>

If you're one of the fortunate few to add a few lakhs to your income while presumably being watched on prime time TV by millions of strangers, do not relax if Shahrukh asks you on KBC-3 to name the capital of Burma as Myanmar used to be known.

Do not fall for an audience poll or ring up a friend who pretends to be surprised that he's talking to the Badshah of Bollywood and then tells you in three of the stipulated 30 seconds that the capital of Myanmar is Rangoon as Yangon used to be known.

The correct answer is Naypyidaw which does not mean "I do not know" but is Burmese for "Royal Palace/City" or "Abode of Kings". The military regime which rules Burma announced the new capital's official name on Armed Forces Day in March 2006.

While opposition groups maintain that the rationale for shifting to the centrally-located Naypyidaw is the apprehension of a seaborne-invasion by a US-led coalition force, the official explanation is that Yangon has become too congested for any further expansion, adds Wikipedia.

To date, however, most of the KBC-3 queries — even the ones which add lakhs to the income — are not of the Naypyidaw kind. Especially simple are the questions which enable one of the ten participants on each programme to qualify for the hot seat.

The night of Wednesday, March 11, saw a young guy being faster than seven other gentlemen and two ladies when it came to arranging the four stages in a woman's life in their chronological order — daughter, wife, mother, mother-in-law! The qualifier also quipped that if he won Rs 2 crore, he would like to go to Swaziland and become the king.

While Shahrukh wondered why, while making it abundantly clear that the contestant's declared ambition was not meant to be taken seriously by any of the viewers in Swaziland, Wikipedia tells us that the reigning monarch King Mswati III has 12 wives and two fiancees, some of them chosen at the annual Umhlanga or Reed Dance where topless maidens perform.

Bidding adieu to KBC

Monika Rawal

The biggest game show in the history of Indian television – ' Kaun Banega Crorepati '- is once again going off air. It's neither an April fool prank nor a rumour doing the rounds - the news is confirmed and official.

The last episode of the show would be aired on April 19, and this will bring the third season of Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) to an end. This might come as a shock for SRK fans and for the rest of the game show buffs, who will have to now re-schedule their prime time slot of 9 pm that was so far occupied by KBC.

But why is the show being taken off air again? Is it because King Khan failed to hold the audience the way Big B did? Or is it the rumors of TRP ratings taking a nose dive? Neither, actually. Contrary to belief, most of the audience has indeed liked SRK as a host and the rest were gradually coming under his spell.

And as far as TRP ratings are concerned, Harsh Rohtagi, GM, marketing and content, Star India says, "We are getting happy TRP ratings from 6 to 8. Comparing the present with the previous season, a two-fold difference has been noticed."

So will this sudden news of the show being put off the air come as a disappointment for millions of viewers who dream of being in the hot seat some day? Read on!

Star TV's contract with production house Celador allows it to have a season of only 52 episodes, despite the fact that the channel has telecast rights for KBC for next five years. According to Rohtagi, , "The show was already planned to run for the subsequent season and thus this 13-week activity has come to an end - with 52 episodes for each season."

"We would tentatively resume in January or February next year but this might go up or down by some weeks. When the show comes back after a gap, it would have some new and exciting changes and that's the key to hold on to the viewers," shares Rohtagi.

The channel may have reason to be concerned about viewer-ship – if the beginnings of this season are anything to go by. The initial days of KBC's third season were dominated by endless comparisons between SRK and Big B; however, King Khan successfully put his best foot forward, added some pizzazz to the show and made it look different.

The following period also witnessed several controversies ranging from the channel's falling TRPs to SRK's failure to meet viewers' expectation. Despite his growing popularity on the show, the audience did take a long time to get accustomed to and accept the new host.

Was the King Khan's comeback on small screen after a 20-year gap destined to be short-termed? Not really! Bollywood's King Khan will continue to host the show in its next season as well. But this would be a long wait for KBC viewers and SRK fans because the show plans to hit the small screen again sometime next year.

However, this puts a question mark on the channel's policy on a year-long hiatus before starting the next season. With such a long gap between two seasons, won't the channel need to put in more efforts to jog the viewers' fading memories?

"Most of the shows follow 13 weeks or 26 weeks format and a six to eight month break is needed between two respective seasons," explains Rohtagi.

He further says: "A set season ensures a set viewer-ship for any show and most of the format shows operate in seasons only. This concept might sound new but it is being followed across the globe for shows like 'American Idol' and 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire."

Or is it that such a break will give the channel some time to negotiate with advertisers and convince them to shell out more money for the show again? Or maybe because format shows tend to become boring after some time and the audience needs a reasonable break to come back to it again.

Whatever the reason, it's time for all KBC buffs and SRK fans to bid farewell to their favourite show ... for a while anyway.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge creates record

In an unprecedented record of sorts, Yash Raj Films' Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) starring Shah Rukh Khan (as Raj) and Kajol (as Simran)entered its 600th week in theatres today (13 April, 2007).

The movie has been playing in Mumbai's Maratha Mandir theatre for the last 12 years since it was released on 20 October, 1995.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, which cemented the superstar status of the Shah Rukh Khan - Kajol pairing, opened to packed houses and rave reviews way back in 1995. The movie also stars the late Amrish Puri, Achla Sachdev, Anupam Kher, Farida Jalal and Satish Shah.

What's more, the movie also starred director Karan Johar, who played Raj's (Shah Rukh Khan) friend. DDLJ was also the launch pad for actors Parmeet Sethi and Mandira Bedi.

This was maverick director Aditya Chopra's debut film, which he directed at the young age of 23. Aditya was assisted by Karan Johar, Uday Chopra and Sameer Sharma on this film. The music of the film was by Jatin-Lalit and the lyrics were penned by the late Anand Bakshi.

The movie became one of the largest grossers in the Indian film history. While remaining popular with the masses, DDLJ also garnered critical acclaim from all quarters. The film swept that year's Filmfare Awards, picking up every single award of consequence, and propelled Aditya Chopra as one of the most influential young voices in Indian cinema.

In 2001, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge broke the continuous-exhibition record, established by the movie Sholay at Minerva Theatre (five years: 1975 – 1980). DDLJ remains the longest running film in the history of Indian cinema.

The awards that the movie has garnered so far are:

National Award:

Best Film – for popular and wholesome entertainment

Filmfare Awards:

Best Film – Yash Chopra (Producer)
Best Director – Aditya Chopra
Best Actor – Shah Rukh Khan
Best Actress – Kajol
Best Supporting Actress – Farida Jalal
Best Comedian – Anupam Kher
Best Lyricist – Anand Bakshi (Tujhe dekha to..)
Best Playback Singer (Male) – Udit Narayan (Mehndi Lagake rakhna)

SRK questions Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif

Relax... it's only for KBC!!

Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif will appear on the season finale of Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) April 19, a day before the Abhishek - Aishwarya wedding and on the day of Aishwarya's mehendi ceremony.

Shah Rukh Khan is expected to wind up the season with a lot of fanfare.

The appearance of Bollywood's newest couple on KBC is likely to be a big draw for Salman fans who will be riveted to their television screens at 9 pm that night to watch the newest lovebirds of Bollywood appear together on primetime television for the first time.

While it is moot whether the Salman – Katrina joint appearance will steal some of the thunder from the Abhishek – Aishwarya wedding as some people are suggesting, it will definitely boost KBC's own lackluster TRP rating.

Another wish, almost fulfilled

Here's some more news on Shah Rukh Khan's new house, behind Mannat

Mumbai Mirror Bureau

Jannat ahead? SRK with wife Gauri

Our khabroo has been out and about at Bandstand, more specifically around Shah Rukh Khan's bungalow, Mannat. Which brings us to the closely guarded six-storeyed building constructed just behind it by SRK. We're told that although it looks more or less complete from outside, it will still take another year to get its interiors done to the satisfaction of Gauri Khan.

One of the floors will serve as Shah Rukh's office. Meanwhile, the floors where the five Khans will reside - Shah Rukh, Gauri, their two children and SRK's sister - will be the stuff luxurious dreams are made of. As far as inside reports go, the bathrooms are being made especially indulgently. They're the size of large bedrooms, designed to suit the by now well-known bathroom habits of Shah Rukh, who loves to spend a fair amount of time in the day reading in there. To each his own, as they say.

Jannat ahead? SRK with wife Gauri

Once the Khans move in, our khabroo says, Mannat will be more or less shut down, though well-maintained. It will be opened up for the bigger, A-lister parties. Right now, even though Mannat covers many thousand square feet, it doesn't make for actual, practical living space. Much of the ground floor is a hall the size, in a manner of speaking, of a football ground. (Not too many journalists can see the details here since the 'guest' bathroom is cleverly constructed, just outside this hall. So if you think you're being clever by asking to go and then checking out the hall, SRK is a step ahead.) Evidently a more 'practical' living space is in order for the Khans.

Amitabh Bachchan pleads for privacy

14th Apr 2007 22.00 IST
By Agencies

Bollywood mega superstar Amitabh Bachchan has reportedly asked for full privacy during the wedding of his son Abhishek Bachchan with the gorgeous Aishwarya Rai .

With the wedding coming closer, rumours are flying thick and thin about the celebrations.

The latest is a report about the Bachchan family requesting the Aviation Ministry not to allow any planes to hover over their residence during the wedding on April 20.

Bachchan has reportedly told a friend, "My son's wedding is a very private solemn and precious moment for me and my family. Surely, we're entitled to our privacy if and when we need it."

Another report has it that no Khans from Bollywood have been invited for the wedding.

Contrary to rumours none of the Khans, Shah Rukh Khan , Aamir Khan or Salman Khan has been invited for the big day.

Recently there were plenty of rumours circulating that SRK's as well as Salman's families have been invited for the wedding.

However according to sources none of the Khans have been invited and the reason cited by the Bachchans is the illness of Bachchan's mother Teji Bachchan. The Bachchans don't wish to have a grand wedding out of respect to Teji Bachchan.

None of the other Khans too from Bollywood like Fardeen Khan , Zayed Khan or Saif Ali Khan have been extended an invitation.

However SRK himself is extremely candid about the fact that he has not been invited for the Ash-Abhi wedding, saying, "I did not meet them post the show, neither have they invited me to their wedding. Regardless I wish them the best."

Even Salman or his family has not been invited for the wedding of the year. Recently there were rumours that Salim Khan who has written several successful scripts for Bachchan during his career earlier was invited, but Salim Khan too claims that this is untrue.

Salman too has not been invited obviously due to his past friction with Ash.

As for Aamir not being invited it comes as no surprise as he quite reclusive from the rest of the film industry and always maintains his distance on a personal note.

However Ash had attended Fardeen's and Zayed's wedding, but unfortunately these two families have also not yet received an invitation.

Meanwhile lovebirds Ash and Abhishek seem to be spending quality time together in London and are enjoying every bit of their rare time together.

The only ones who have so far received an invitation are Karan Johar , Sanjay Dutt , Ajay Devgan and Kajol and Sunil Shetty .

Spotted! SRK snapped at Tussauds

April 13, 2007 19:20 IST

Reader Aftab Hussain wrote to us, thanking us for helping him meet Shah Rukh Khan, and getting himself this prized picture.

It all started when he logged into rediff.com and stumbled upon a picture of SRK's impending arrival at Madame Tussauds in London. He visited the Tussauds web site, and participated in an online quiz. The next thing he knew, he was invited to the unveiling of SRK's wax statue on April 3.

Aftab writes that it was a dream come true for him. He met SRK, got an autograph, and posed for pictures with the supernova.

'He is really down to earth and yeah, the most important thing is that he looks much smarter than his wax statue,' Aftab writes.

If you encounter/meet/see film or television personalities, take a photograph or a video of the star(s), please scan the photograph(s) and mail the pictures and video clips to us. We will feature the best images and video clips right here on Rediff Movies.
