It'll be mother of all weddings

The upcoming wedding of Bollywood stars Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai will be the greatest marriage in India's modern history and could be as big as that of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, a media report said today.

"With a guest list expected to exceed 5,000, helicopters hired to shower petals over the reception and the astrological charts finally predicting a union that is truly blessed, the marriage of the former Miss World Aishwarya Rai and Bollywood leading man Abhishek Bachchan, the son of Asia's most famous actor Amitabh Bachchan is expected to happen within a month," a leading foreign daily reported.

The ceremony, set to be held over 10 days in a private estate on the outskirts of Mumbai and a palace in Rajasthan, is being hailed as a Bollywood fairytale and India's answer to the coupling of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, the report said.

"For Indians across the world this wedding will be as big as Charles and Diana's was for the British", Bollywood columnist Amita Ghosh was quoted in the report.

"The question people are asking right now is: why all the fuss about Liz Hurley? Perhaps this is why the media in India have turned against Liz, nobody really knows who she is. Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan are our real stars and their wedding is the only one that counts," Ghosh said.

US Air Force band to sing Kajra re

IANS
Posted Tuesday , March 13, 2007 at 23:20
DESI TUNES: US Air Force band was fascinated
when it heard Kajra re and asked for the score.

New Delhi: The Bollywood hit Kajra re will take on an American flavour when a US Air Force band belts it out here later this week at a military tattoo being conducted as part of the ongoing platinum jubilee celebrations of the Indian Air Force (IAF).

The tattoo on Saturday, open to the public, will also feature air force bands from Singapore, Sri Lanka and Thailand, as also of the IAF, the Indian Army and the Indian Navy.

The bands will perform indoors the next day for an audience that will include Defence Minister A K Antony.

"The US Air Force band was fascinated when it heard Kajra re and asked us for the score. They have promised to stick to the original but they are bound to give their own distinctive touch," said an IAF officer.

Kajra re, a popular number from the 2005 hit Bunty Aur Babli, featured superstar Amitabh Bachchan, his son Abhishek and the latter's fiance Aishwarya Rai.

A tattoo is essentially a stylised open-air concert that militaries stage worldwide and at which equal emphasis is given to music, choreography and ceremonial uniforms.

By far the best known of these is the Edinburgh Military Tattoo that is now in its 57th year.

India has its own version of the tattoo - the Beating Retreat ceremony in the Capital on January 29 that concludes the annual Republic Day celebrations.

"The programme (for Saturday) has been stylised as per the international format and will be performed in two segments," Air Marshal J N Burma, the IAF's air officer-in-charge administration, said.

The first segment will begin at 1600 hrs, IST at the Amar Jawan Jyoti memorial to the Unknown Soldier at India Gate.

The bands will perform martial tunes and march around the memorial for 12 minutes each.

They will reassemble at the same venue at 1800 hrs, IST and each band will perform popular tunes, as also some jazz and rock numbers, for 15 minutes each.

The Sunday performance will feature a medley of tunes by each foreign band, while the Indian military bands will stage a combined performance. Each band will perform for 15-20 minutes.

'Ash & I will meet the sex workers!'

By Subhash K Jha

Sushmita's impending appointment with Hollywood actress Ashley Judd has her excited like seldom before.

"What makes Ashley's trip to India so special is not only the fact that she cares so deeply for the AIDS cause. It's also because she's coming all the way to our country to raise funds for this cause. And as far as I'm concerned that's enough reason for India to play host to Ashley.

I feel she's my guest and I'm going to do my best to make her feel at home," says Sushmita before Ashley Judd comes to Mumbai to join hands with Sush.

Ashley has gone on record to say she's keen on to meet Sush.

"Has she?" Sush is delighted. "I read up a whole lot on her on the net. And I must say I'm very very impressed by her work. It's not just what she's done on screen, but what she has done off screen that makes her so important. It's the kind of career model I'm trying to follow. "

On 14 April Sush and Ashley leave early in the morning for the Kamathipura red-light area of Mumbai to spend the whole day with sex workers.

Says Sush, "I'll be speaking to the sex workers in the language that's prevalent among them, Bengali. I'm really looking forward to my day with Ashley and with these brave women who perhaps need just that bit of information to make their lives healthier and safer."

The day with the sex workers will be followed by a 90-minute interview for the National Geographic. "Then on the 17 March Ashley and I will be attending a very exclusive dinner to raise charity funds for the cause," says Sushmita who says she loves public events.

"Even the dance performances at functions. Because I dance basically for myself. If the audiences enjoy it, good for them."

Why Ash has gone out of Site

Ash's website has been off the Internet since December 2006 and fans are in a quandary as they don't know where to get news of the star especially since it's such an important phase in her life (with news of her shaadi et al).

Every time they check Ash's official website www.aishwaryaworld.com all they get is a note that says, 'Per Aishwarya Rai: This site is temporarily unavailable. Please do not call or email but check back again next month.'

Ash has been in an awkward position, since her impending marriage to Abhishek Bachchan became public news. The website gets about 5,000 hits daily and she knew that her fans would write in to know details of her wedding. A very private person, Ash wanted to keep a low profile. Another possibility, they say, is that she and the Bachchans, who have not made their official website yet, might want to have a common website in the future.

We've heard that Ash asked for specific changes in her website, but was not happy with the ones made by Simone Sheffield, the designer of her site. When we contacted Simone, she said, "The website is not functional because Aishwarya wanted to make some changes in it. The site will be redesigned, this time by someone else in India."

Aishwarya Rai teams up with Rohan Sippy
By Subhash K. Jha, March 21, 2007 - 06:59 IST

After his debut film Kuch Naa Kaho, Rohan Sippy has again teamed up with Aishwarya Rai, albeit for a Lux commercial.

"That's right," says media- recluse Aishwarya. "Rohan and I have been friends for ages. When his name cropped up for the new Lux commercial I immediately grabbed it. We just shot the ad in Dubai. And it's turned out really HOT!"

Talk veers to rumours that Aishwarya has not been giving ample time to the promotion of her films. "Not true at all! I've been virtually living out of suitcases, running from location to location all over the world, trying to get my four new films ready. Even then I've always made myself available for the promotion of all my films. I was absolutely pressed for time during the release of Mistress Of Spices. I nevertheless agreed to a number of one-on-ones on the film. What could I do if the press persons were looking for more spice than I could give them about the film?" she laughs, dodging all questions on her personal life.

Right now she's all set to promote Jagmohan Mundhra's Provoked in a big way. "It's a film and theme I completely believe in. I suggested we get the real Kiranjit Ahluwalia whom I play, into the promotional loop for Provoked. As for me not dubbing my lines in the Punjabi, Tamil Telugu and Hindi versions, I speak Punjabi in the original English version of the film. So the Punjabi version needs no dubbing from me. For the Tamil and Telugu versions I've asked them to get professional dubbing artistes who speak in these languages. How would I sound speaking in Tamil and Telugu? I don't think Hrithik dubbed for the South Indian versions of Krissh."

Her last word on the bikini controversy in Dhoom 2. "Thank God people have stopped talking about it. It was never me."

Aishwarya, Rohan team up for Lux ad
By Subhash K. Jha, IANS

After "Kuch Naa Kaho", Aishwarya Rai teams up once again with Rohan Sippy, this time for a sizzling Lux commercial.

"That's right," said media recluse Aishwarya. "Rohan and I have been friends for ages. When his name cropped up for the new Lux commercial, I immediately grabbed it. We shot the ad in Dubai and it's turned out really hot," the actress told IANS.

Talk veers to rumours that Aishwarya has not been giving ample time to the promotion of her films.

"Not true at all! I've been virtually living out of suitcases, running from location to location all over the world, trying to get my four new films ready. Even then I've always made myself available for the promotion of all my films."

She admits being hard pressed for time during the release of "Mistress Of Spices", and therefore being unable to participate in the promos.

"I nevertheless agreed to a number of one-on-ones on the film. What could I do if the press persons were looking for more spice than I could give them about the film?" she laughed, dodging all questions on her personal life.

Right now, she's all set to promote Jag Mundhra's "Provoked" in a big way.

"Provoked" is the harrowing tale of Kiranjit Ahluwalia, a battered Punjabi housewife and mother of two who is beaten and raped by her alcoholic husband.

"It's a film and theme I completely believe in. I suggested we get the real Kiranjit Ahluwalia, whom I play, into the promotional loop for 'Provoked'.

"As for me not dubbing my lines in the Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi versions, I speak Punjabi in the original English version of the film. So, the Punjabi version needs no dubbing from me. For the Tamil and Telugu versions I've asked them to get professional dubbing artistes who speak in these languages. How would I sound speaking in Tamil and Telugu? I don't think Hrithik (Roshan) dubbed for the South Indian versions of 'Krrish'."

Her last word on the bikini controversy in "Dhoom 2" -- "Thank god people have stopped talking about it. It was never me."

Aishwarya Rai does a hot ad for Sippy

Aishwarya and Rohan Sipppy's friendship dates back to 'Kuch Naa Kaho' and sure the actor wouldn't like to miss the director's next venture be it a commercial! "Rohan and I have been friends for ages. When his name cropped up for the new Lux commercial, I immediately grabbed it. We shot the ad in Dubai and it's turned out really hot," said Aishwarya. Did she say 'Hot'? Oh god that means SIppy is going to get into trouble with the Bachchans. Poor Sippy!
