I never expected to like Ellie

But it happened, slowly. I mentioned this/posted some version of this on page 22 of some long thread but anyways, someone (I'm sorry, I'm forgot your name and am not doing this on purpose!) was saying how we shouldn't call Ellie "poor girl" re: Kamya and co& bullying her because she got in on Bollywood and is going to strike it rich as a Bollywood actress essentially (paraphrasing! :))
But I disagree.

To be honest, its not hard to get a Bollywood movie if you're foreign/fair-skinned and willing to learn hindi (prime example: Katrina Kaif, who I assure you would not have understood half the puns/double entendres/shuddh hindi used in the show or by Salman during the start of her career; the point Ellie is at now). So thats no big accomplishment to say "don't call her poor girl".

The fact is, she IS alone - hard enough to do but doubly harder for young women for ANY job and this is a new language she's just learned in the span of a year. I don't know about you, but I still learn new words in my first language even though I'm way past schooling age.

She's JUST learning about Indian culture, which plays a big role in not just tv serials/movies but also reality shows (ex: Armaan bitching about Kushal not calling him "Armaanji/Armaan Bhai; and Pratyusha admonishing Ellie for daring to say that she would slap Armaan if he made lewd comments at her b/c of his age (I don't care personally; if you make lewd comments on me - regardless of your age or status I will fight back because that sort of shitty behavior transcends any other "respectability" line).

Ellie is just learning these cultural norms and language and in a new city and its not her fault Salman is flirting with her at all - he's the one initiating it and basically picking on her.

So yes, poor Ellie, I feel for her. Even though at first I was like, "why the hell are there white girls on an Indian tv show," after seeing her personality (atleast whats shown) she seems to be a very down to earth person, eager to learn about Indian culture and lifestyles in a positive, non-condescending manner (she's in a freaking gaun/village type section and we've never heard her complain ONCE - when I come to India, my parents make sure not to stay overnight at any of our village cousins' houses b/c of the whole toilet and sleeping situations which are similar to the Hell side of BB House).

I honestly never planned to be an Elli supporter - I actually wanted her to be one of the first out when I first saw her, but she won me over. Maybe it was when she smiled and didn't mind when Shilpa couldn't give her her milk one day or how understanding she is about everyone OR REMEMBERING HER FATHER'S BIRTHDAY IN ANOTHER COUNTRY ON A SHOW with no clock/calendar/paper/pencil like how??? She's adorable and whether or not she turns out to be pretending (if she's pretending about hindi, I still don't care because language issues are huge) or playing a game or double dholki-ing someone later on, I like her at this point (not to say it might not change like my mind changed for Armaan/Tanissha/Kamya). But at this point, she's cute in her mannerisms and actions and if I knew her in real life, I would love to have someone like her as my friend.

And regardless of whether you're a Kamya fan (I personally loved her acting in Maryada), or Tanissha fan, or Pratyusha fan or whatever, the fact is bullying is WRONG in any and every circumstance and they did bully her and that is abominable. You can still love Kamya/Tanissha/Prats but you have to acknowledge they do some shitty stuff sometimes.

(sorry for the essay!! ;) )
