Chapter 11
Ajabde lay in her bed thinking of the events that scared her so bad
She was feeling restless so decided to take a stroll near the river as it was not far from the camp and also it gave her time to reflect on everything that had been happening around them - they received news Rani DheerBai was also coming to the puja her entourage would reach the camp next morning which stirred a lot of gossips amongst the ladies. JB, SB and her mother were hiding their worries from her but the reality was that if Rani DB was coming then chances of her son Jagmal accompanying her increased as well. Ajabde was worried about Kunwar Pratap coming face to face with Kunwar Jagmal then that in itself was a disaster waiting to happen and on top of it all Surtan Singh had been coming regularly to the camp in guise of security checks even though he had been injured but he always managed to give her goose bumps
As she walked by she heard muffled voices so she went further to investigate but as soon as she came across the scene she covered her own mouth to hold her scream as in front of her lay a woman in her own pool of blood her clothes were tattered like someone had tried forcing them but the woman had a small knife which she plunged into her own chest refusing to be dishonoured. Ajabde wanted to run to the woman but the woman who was still a bit conscious looked Ajabde straight into her eyes as if pleading her to run away when the man no not man but men came back - Ajabde hid behind a large tree trying to cover her from the men who were soldiers in Surtan Singh's army
Soldier 1: Man did she have to kill herself? Now what are we supposed to tell Hukum?
Soldier 2: Tell him the truth that the woman he was eyeing killed herself by plunging a knife into her own body
Soldier 1: I'm not worried about Hukum but his guest on the other hand
Soldier 2: True that Kunwar Jagmal is a pure beast with what he did to that daasi? No one was able to recognise her after he was finished with her. I worry about the girl who will be his wife
Soldier 1: You mean Rajkumari Ajabde after all he is planning on taking her away as soon as the puja is finished and Hukum is helping him
Ajabde was scared learning about the developments thinking about all the deceptions that were into play. She had to inform Kunwar Pratap about all of it but how? She was trapped and the soldiers were making no move to leave - an arrow came flying and hit one of the soldiers directly on his shoulder making him scream in agony while another came hitting the other one in his leg making them run away. Ajabde held her breath looking for an opportunity to run so as she saw the two soldiers running she dashed for it - without stopping she managed to reach the temple where she sat on the stairs near the main entrance trying to calm her frayed nerves when a voice came from behind...
Hansa Bai was worried upon receiving the news of Dheer Bai's arrival but she knew she had to be strong for her children also she was not alone JB and SB were with her and she had written a note to her husband informing him about the latest developments. Both Patta and Kunwar Balwant were taking the night shifts for guarding them and in the day time they would escort their sister everywhere except today they had gone to practice their skills with a couple of other soldiers so she went to check in on her daughter who had been very quiet since last night
HB: Ajabde are you alright?
Ajabde: I'm fine Maa is there anything I can help you out with?
HB: No everything has been taken care of beta. Panditji said that puja is going to take place in 3 days from now but we will have a few ceremonies before that which includes a strict fast for an entire day to be held a day before the puja
Ajabde: Alright Maa I will observe the fast and
HB: You don't have to be scared of anything Ajabde - Rani Dheer Bai's presence here is for the same reason we are here - for the puja and once it is done we will go back to Bijolia. Also Jaiwanta Baiji and Sajja Baiji have spoken to me and your Daata about Kunwar Pratap and your marriage. Once we go back your Daata has decided to proceed with the Shagun
Ajabde smiles and then requests to rest as she felt a bit tired when in reality she was afraid that she might cry out in front of her mother about what she witnessed last night
Shakti had never seen his brother so angry with the way he had beaten up the two soldiers and cut them into pieces. Patta and Balwant were also present looking at the way Sakha Veer was avenging the poor woman they found last night but Shakti had far more bigger fish to fry like occupy Patta and Balwant so that his brother could meet up with their sister and calm her down. They had seen Ajabde walking by the riverside and when she had not returned after a few minutes they went after her and came upon the soldiers and the woman. So they released arrows on the soldiers but before his brother could reach Ajabde she had fled from there which was a good thing as it gave them time to cremate the woman with full honour and capture those soldiers who opened up like parrots after a good beating
Now he would take Patta and Balwant to investigate the matters near the palace while his brother went to speak with his Bhabisa
Chapter 12
Uday Singh was taking in the surroundings as he rode along with Rawatji near the borders of Bundi. The entire place screamed of helplessness and desolation which hit him directly in the chest as the scenario reminded him of his position one which he himself was responsible of being trapped in if only he was not addicted to that drug then maybe things might have been different
Rawatji: Ranaji looks like a lot has happened here with the amount of abandoned land
US: Ji Rawatji the people here have fled or are dead trying to survive in the harsh conditions
Rawatji: I don't understand what will Surtan Singh gain by destroying his own lands?
US: Surtan Singh is playing a very dangerous game Rawatji as per his letters to the council Sakha Veer is responsible for all the civil disturbance in Bundi and not his own policies of high taxation, severe punishments for delay in his works and more. He wants to blame Sakha Veer for everything and earn more capital from the Rajputana as help which he has no intention of paying back
Rawatji: Then why do you support him in catching Sakha Veer when you know he is a saviour?
US: Because the only way I can get rid of traitors amongst our own is by making them believe that I have fallen for their trap. My addiction cost me my family Rawatji - my sons have gone out and formed their own kingdom where all of Mewar along with other kingdom's public has taken shelter and are working towards a new and developed future. It is my responsibility as their father to leave them their legacy as it was left for me by my parents
Rawatji: Ji Ranaji
US: Rawatji we are very near Bundi I believe we should camp out somewhere nearby to keep an eye out for everything
Pratap slowly crept into Ajabde's tent hiding from the curious glances of his mothers and other ladies. Well his brother was about to take them all for a small stroll to the oldest tree of Bundi a holy place as per local people giving him a good amount of time to be with his beloved who happened to be staring at one of the tents wall with an unwavering gaze. Pratap saw her sitting quietly trying as if trying to figure out the a puzzle when he saw a tear fall down her cheek
Pratap: Ajab?
She looked at him and all of her dam of self-control burst as she ran in his arms trying to find solace after everything she had experienced. Pratap engulfed her in his arms calming her down as he had an inkling of the reason she was clinging to him so tightly like she was scared he would vanish. HE gently carried her in arms back to her bed and rubbed his fingers through her hair allowing her to cry out- to let her pain all out
Pratap: Ajab?
Ajab (sobbing): She lay in a pool of her own blood Kunwar Pratap. We Rajputs honour and protect a woman's honour but those men were- sobs harder. She killed herself to protect her honour while they...they laughed about it.
Pratap: I know... the soldiers are dead now and the lady was cremated with full honour. Bhai Shakti and I made sure of it. Now this is not the only reason for your breakdown
Ajabde (looks at him as he wipes her tears): Kunwar Jagmal is in Bundi he is staying at the palace as a guest where he is planning on kidnapping me to have his way with me like I'm some sort of toy to be used for his pleasure and his mother is also coming to the puja she is expected to arrive late today or tomorrow I don't know but I do know her presence means trouble and I don't want to be the reason anyone gets hurt and ...
Pratap places his finger on her lips: That is a lot of problems Rajkumari Ajabde now will you allow this servant of yours to take care of you
Ajabde: You are not my servant
Pratap smiles a bit captures her lips in a passionate kiss pouring all his love, strength and protection while Ajabde held on to him trying to be as close as she possibly could as she let go of her fear, insecurities and worries
