Mannish Goel's penning a reality fiction

Just called on to check on as to what's happening with Mannish Goel post Betiyaan - Paraya Dhan. Currently on a sabbatical, the actor is busy penning a script.

The chilled out actor says, "I've not signed on anything post Betiyaan, since I am waiting for a powerful role to come my way. As for now, I am currently making the most of my free time; introspecting on life, working on my physique, doing up my new house, spending time with Aarav and writing a soap script for my wife Poonam."

Elaborating further on his pet project, Mannish says, "I don't believe in total black or white characters like a Tulsi, Parvati, Prerna or a Komalika. I believe in characters which are realistic and true to life. When my characters cry or laugh there will be a logic to it, something which used to happen during the Hum Log days. I call my soap a realistic fiction."

So, like many other actors, is he planning to turn producer himself? "I am not yet pitching it to anyone but some of my friends have suggested that I produce it myself. So, let's see what happens"

In the past, Mannish has essayed a variety of roles in Kahaani', Kasauti'., Bhabhi, Paraya Dhan and Nach Baliye. Post which he was offered Kaajal and Durgesh Nandini, which somehow didn't work out due to financial differences.

Clarifying his position, he says, "I started my career with Rs 2000 per day and what I quoted for Durgesh was my market price, which I used to get for Bhabhi. I told the channel you quote your price but somehow they never got back to me. When a producer calls me for a role, I tell them to first tell me the role and if it's a good role, I don't haggle over money."

But does it pay to be so choosy in today's day and age when younger actors hog faster limelight? "I am sure it's worth the wait. I am waiting for that one role which will bring me back in the limelight. I want something mind blowing, something which is quite impossible."

Let's hope its worth the wait.

Mannish champions for li'l magician
By: Tushar Joshi
March 23, 2007

Goel raising funds for eight-year-old Ashley, who is suffering from a rare disease; Ashley performs magic to gather money for his treatment

Lending A Helping Hand: Mannish Goel
Mannish Goel recently hosted the annual day of his son's play school Kookoburra in Juhu. During the event, the actor bumped into eight-year-old Ashley Vanristell, whose story moved him to tears.

The eight-year-old child has been performing magic shows for the last three years. Wherever he goes, his shows are housefull.

However, not many know that Ashley is suffering from a very rare condition called hypogammaglobulinemia (lack of white blood cells that help the body fight diseases) since the age of five.

Deeply moved

Talking about Ashley's condition, Mannish says, "I wrote the script for the annual day event, and had to pen a line for all participating kids.

When I heard Ashley's story, I was so moved that before introducing him, I said, 'The day his life was written by God, it was taken away'. For me, it was the most heart-wrenching tale I have ever heard."

After hearing about his condition, which requires him to take a painful injection on the 19th of every month, Mannish decided to campaign and create as much awareness for Ashley as possible. "I have a son as well.

My instincts as a father drove me to do something for him. It's unbelievable that the fate of an eight-year-old is decided by an injection that he takes each month."

Grave situation

Aishwarya Rai
The biggest hurdle in Ashley's treatment is not just the fact that a single injection costs over Rs 50,000, but also the lack of interest shown by NGOs or institutions in a position to raise money to support him.

We spoke to Ashley's mom Andrea, who told us, "It's a grave situation.

His injection for this month still hasn't arrived and I am getting quite paranoid. These injections come from Germany to Mumbai via Delhi.

I have been told that it has reached Delhi and should arrive in Mumbai in the next few days."

Even though help and support was hard to come by, Andrea says the late Dhirubhai Ambani and his wife Kokilaben have been supporting her for Ashley's treatment.

"We carried out the first diagnosis on Ashley when he was five. It's all because of God and Dr Rashid Merchant from Nanavati hospital, who saved my son's life.

At the moment, Dr Pankaj Parikh, who works in Harikishandas Hospital at Charni Road, is treating Ashley."

Since there is no permanent cure, Andrea has to bank on the monthly injections, which come from Germany.

"When Ashley found out the cost of these injections, he suggested performing magic shows and collecting money for the medicine.

That's when we decided to organise as many magic shows as possible and try and raise awareness about his condition."

A rare disease

Hypogammaglobulinemia is a disorder that is caused by a lack of B-lymphocytes and a resulting low level of immunoglobulins (antibodies) in the blood.

Immunoglobulins play a dual role in the immune response by recognising foreign antigens and triggering a biological response that culminates in the elimination of the antigen.

Antibody deficiency is associated with recurrent infections with specific types of bacteria.

The allergies stars suffer from

Allergy: its one word which everyone is familiar with. From eggs to fish, from dairy to Chinese food - the list is endless. Even our glamorous stars have cause to break out into hives sometimes. There they share with us what makes their skin crawl… Literally.

Rucha Gujrati:
I am very allergic to perfumes and if the smell is very strong, my head starts paining. I am also allergic to dust, pollution and sweat. I try to keep myself cool so that I can avoid sweating, because excess sweat leads to rashes on my skin.

Kashmeera Shah:
I am only allergic to liars! I just can't stand anybody who is lying. I get very angry if anyone is dishonest with me because whatever the consequence I always speak truth. Luckily, I am not allergic to anything else.

Daljeet Kaur:
I am asthmatic and hence I can't bear dust and pollution. Even the smells of certain flowers irritate me. I can't take the smell of Sunflower but thankful I'm not allergic to roses. I avoid Combiflam, after taking it I get rashes all over my body.

Divyanka Tripathi:
I am allergic to dust, pollen grains and the marigold flower. Whenever a marigold flower is around me my eyes swell up. I've had this condition since my childhood. Another thing is that I start sneezing badly whenever the temperature changes.

Mona Singh:
I am allergic to antibiotics so I can't take heavy doses of it. Other than that my body tends to develop rashes when I wear certain clothes. I have to I have to avoid warm clothes even in cooler places because I feel suffocated and break out into these rashes.

Dolly Sohi:
I avoid eating Chane ki dal. Whenever I eat it I get boils and pimples on my face. Also I cannot wear net dresses because my skin gets irritated and develops rashes. Hence I avoid both of these things.

Mona Wasu:
I am allergic only to a tablet called Dispirin, and nothing else. I eat everything normally and can wear everything.

Rucha negates rumours of Bhabhi going off air

There have been reports of UTV's afternoon serial Bhabhi winding up. When

contacted, the lead actor Rucha Gujurati who plays Suhana, negated it saying, "Even I have been hearing about it but no it's not going off air. When the serial was slated for a 20-year leap, the same rumours did the rounds."

Even Neelu Kohli avers, "Not at all. I guess it's because there a few new afternoon serials in the pipeline which are the cause for generating these rumors. Actually, now my character has been brought back after a break." For those uninitiated, originally Bhabhi is a story of Saroj, a bride who finds her Life changing drastically the minute she lifts her bridal veil.

An unfortunate accident with another vehicle carrying a marriage party renders her unconscious. Hours later, as she recuperates, she figures out that the man she is with is not her husband. Later, the soap grew in the narrative around a marriage based on pretence, as the couple continue to live in one room, posing as husband and wife.

Insiders reveal that the problem for this afternoon TRP raker started when about a year back Dolly Sohi, the original Bhabhi, post marriage got relocated to Canada. What followed later was a drastic change in the track and the new Bhabhi Rucha taking over. Some time back, Dolly did make a comeback but somehow the storyline has left audiences confused.

Presently, the soap is going for a small 6 year leap where Rucha informs, my character Suhana is dead for the original family, but she is surviving. I am a teacher in a boarding school in Nainital and now the story brings in a love triangle element to it." Bhanujeet Sudan and Vishal Singh form the other angles.

We queried UTV content head, Monisha Singh on the fate of the serial. "These are all baseless rumours. The show is doing well, and it's not going off air."

'Rucha is copying my style!'
By: Shaheen Parkar
April 6, 2007
Naazneen Patel is quitting Bhabhi because she is fed up of her co-star aping her look on the afternoon show

Naazneen I Patel, who plays Megha in the Star soap Bhabhi, is quitting the afternoon drama. Reason?

Her track is turning negative and she does not want to essay a scheming, menacing character, or so we've been told. But the real reason, as usual, is something else.

The buzz is that Naazneen and the show's protagonist Rucha Gujarathi (who plays Suhana) have a peculiar problem.

It is learnt that whenever Nazneen styles her look in a particular way, Rucha promptly copies it!

Fit as a fiddle

Is that the real reason why Naazneen is quitting the UTV show? Says Naazneen, "I don't want to get into all this, but there have been certain issues that I feel strongly about.

I have conveyed this to the channel and the production house. It is up to them to take call."

According to the buzz, Naazneen and Rucha don't see eye-to-eye over their make-up and styling on the show. Says an onlooker, "Naazneen feels that she is a trendsetter.

She is extremely conscious about her body, her looks and clothes. She thinks she has an upper hand with reference to the rest."

Miss Know-All

I Couldn't Care Less!
Rucha Gujarathi

The actress admits that she is extremely conscious about her image.

"Fitness is very important to me. I used to be a hockey player at Khalsa College. For a while I was an airhostess with Saudia.

After I quit flying and took up acting, I realised that most television actresses did not care for their looks and body.

I strive hard for a toned body and I can carry off anything, but most actresses are clueless even about styling."

When we checked with Rucha about the copying allegations, she says, "Why would I copy anyone? I don't want to comment on silly things.

All I can say is that when I started wearing a neckpiece, she also started wearing one too. Then I began to apply a smoky eye shadow and the next thing I know she's doing that too. What more can I say?"

Naazneen, who made her debut in Kahiin Kissi Roz (Star) and has featured in shows like Kkehna Hai Kuch Mujhko (Sony) and Pancham (Zee), refrains from making comments about the copycat issue.

"I have already informed UTV about my decision to quit. They are contemplating whether to replace my character or kill it off."

Naazneen is also doing Jignesh Parekh's film Karan, which stars Sonali Kulkarni and Seema Biswas. "I want to concentrate on acting and play positive roles from now on," she says on a parting shot.

Incidentally, during her Kkusum days, Aashka Goradia (who played Kumud)
had alleged that after she got a makeover — a chic new hairstyle and colour job – Rucha (who played Mahi) also went in for a similar look and to the same hairstylist, Perri Patel!

Dolly goes spiritual

Plays a Tirupati Balaji devotee in Man Mein Hai Vishwas

Dolly Sohi has extended her vacation in Mumbai. The actress, who shifted base to Victoria (Canada) post marriage, will join software engineer hubby Avneet Dhanowa back home only in mid-May. She was earlier supposed to return this month.

And the reason is not only to spend time with her folks here but also a professional one — she has landed a role in Dheeraj Kumar's Man Mein Hain Vishwas. "It's an interesting show. It takes a look at people's faith and beliefs.

I play the role of a woman who's a staunch believer in Tirupati Balaji and the story follows what extraordinary situations unfold in her life."

Nostalgic

Dolly, who has been in Mumbai since mid-January, earlier did a comeback role in the afternoon soap Bhabhi. This Star drama had her as the protagonist till she relocated to Canada in December 2005.

"As UTV (the producers) knew I was in Mumbai, they approached me to be back in the scheme of things. I shot with them for 10 days. It was an enjoyable experience."

Dolly has also been travelling to hometown Punjab. My brother Surendra got engaged to an Amritsar-based girl.

There was all the shopping to do. The wedding is by the year-end. So I will be back with my husband for the wedding."

Don't talk to me about love: Bhanujeet Sudan and Rucha Gujarathi

Another friendship bites the dust. Bhabhi co-stars Rucha Gujarati (Suhana) and Bhanujeet Sudan (Nihaal) are no longer on talking terms.

The longtime pals have stopped talking to and even stopped looking at each other, unless, of course, the camera needs them to.

When contacted, Bhanu begins diplomatically, "Rucha and I try to exchange pleasantries.

We don't have a great friendship going between us, but we are not enemies either."

When probed further, he says he is upset with Rucha's 'politics' and tales she has been spreading about him.

"I couldn't take it any longer. Even when I confronted her, she had her answers ready."

Enough is enough

Bhanujeet Sudan

Rucha, on the other hand, maintains, "Yes, Bhanujeet and I don't talk to each other. Earlier, we were best friends.

Suddenly, he started talking less and less to me. It came to a point where he started behaving as if I didn't exist.

Two weeks ago, I decided that I wasn't going to run after him and I started ignoring him. Surely, I have some self respect."

But a close friend of Rucha (on condition of anonymity) spills the beans.

"Rucha and Bhanujeet were over-friendly and Bhanu started having feelings for her.

He often told her he liked her, but Rucha thought he meant it as a friend. Later, she realised what was happening. She did not have romantic feelings for him, so she took a step back.

This irked Bhanujeet. Thereafter, things turned sour between them. Today, neither of them can't stand the other."

When asked if Bhanujeet was in love with her, Rucha says, "That's for Bhanujeet to answer."

Bhanujeet, refuses to admit his feelings for Rucha, saying, "We were just friends."

Can Dolly Sohi Salvage The Show?
[19 Apr 2007]

"I Was The Heart And Soul Of Bhabhi. When I Quit, It Reflected In the Poor TRPs"

OVERCOMING THE TRAUMA of an unfortunate miscarriage in Canada, Dolly Sohi is back in Mumbai to face the arc lights. Getting back into Bhabhi, with a doting husband and unstinted family support, she is a changed person and claims that she has no grudge against co-star Mannish Goel since he is out of the serial now. In real life, she's also happy playing mom to her sister Amandeep, who's trying to get a foothold in showbiz.

Dolly Sohi has always been everyone's loving and venerable Bhabhi. Doe-eyed, docile, demure and benign, she has been the face of the soap and her disappearance from the serial understandably led to sagging TRPs. The popularity of the show at one point of time had dwindled to rock bottom and many stars even quit it in a jiffy. Explains Dolly, "Saroj's character was always etched in the audience's mind. And the audience finds it very difficult to relate to a new person. I was the heart and soul of the serial. They identified me with it completely. So when I quit, it reflected in the poor TRPs. The show is my baby and I am very attached to it. We are trying hard to shoot up the ratings. They used to rock once!"

Now that she is back in the saddle and has resumed work, does she find any difficulty essaying the powerful protagonist again, post a long hiatus? "I don't find any change," she states. "The unit is the same. I feel that I was away just for a week and have just resumed work."

There are reports stating that her co-star Rucha Gujarati is getting insecure with her arrival? Dolly laughs heartily at this one and says, "Well, when I went on the sets, Rucha wasn't there. I don't think anybody needs to get insecure. I am an easy-going person. I get along very well with Rucha and since she plays my daughter on screen, it's very important for the motherly emotions to be accentuated."

Dolly left the television industry after getting married. But things changed last year after she underwent a miscarriage. As she took time to get over the trauma, her husband advised her to return to India and do some work again. Dolly gets schmaltzy as she recalls, "I was undergoing lot of depression and my husband felt that it was time for me to resume work, which would divert my mind in some other direction. He asked me to take a break."

She is all praise for her supportive hubby and feels that marriage has brought about a radical change in her personality and her outlook towards life and relationships. "Marriage has contributed a lot to my life. Now I understand the gravity of human relationships. Initially, I used to be this spoilt brat. Sab apni marzi ka karti thi. Now I have learnt to adjust and acclimatize in a family set-up and cope with different individuals of varying temperaments."

Dolly feels that these new realizations are helping her essay her screen roles more convincingly. "It's helping a lot to bring more depth to the performances. Initially, I would just blindly go by what writers gave me. Writer ne jo likh diya, ho gaya. Now I feel that these relationships actually have deep values."

Apart from essaying her favourite character, Dolly is busy rustling up her sister Amandeep's career, which is still to take off. "One major reason I am here is because of my sister. I am helping her take right decisions so that she works for the right production houses. She had dabbled with acting when I left India. She needs to know kiske saath kaise baat karni hai. I am almost playing mom to her. She missed me a lot. I have told her categorically not to go for character roles because once you start doing those roles, you get stuck in a rut and there's no scope to do lead roles. I have told her to say no to all such offers."

Dolly agrees that her name has helped her sister a lot in getting a foothold in showbiz. But then she adds with a smile, "It's her luck that'll decide everything." The actress is missing her husband badly and calls him up at least twice a day; they're also in touch via the Internet and online chat. "My husband was planning to come to India for his brother's wedding, which was taking place in March. But now it has been postponed to November, so he might come during that time. We are like any other newly married couple. Both of us have similar likings and are very emotional. Both of us are very down-to-earth too."

What about her husband's feelings towards her long-time dushman, co-star Mannish Goel. Dolly beams with pride, "When my husband saw those stories about Mannish Goel and me in print, he laughed them off. I was flummoxed to see his reaction, though he took it with a pinch of salt!"

At one point of time, Dolly and her Bhabhi co-star Mannish, were baying for each other's blood. Though now she prefers to wash her hands off the entire spate of showdowns. Dolly had once accused Mannish of major attitude problems. When I ask her to clarify whether she had gone to the extent of filing a case against Mannish for his high-handedness, she refutes it completely. "The problem between us never went to that extent. I didn't file any case against him. I didn't think Mannish had an attitude problem initially. We were good friends. We had shot some very beautiful scenes together and our chemistry was good too. Mannish is a very reserved person. He would shoot scenes and go back. Our relationship was very professional and matter-of-fact. The problem started with one suhaag raat scene. It was very stupid on our part to make a big issue of it. From then onwards, there were problems between us. But I genuinely believe that he never took advantage of me. If I'll meet him now, I'll smile at him."

So how's life in Canada and does she miss the adulation she got back home? "I stay in a very small town called Victoria, which has an all-white population. But whenever I go to Vancouver, I am surrounded by Indians who keep saying, 'Aap yahan kya kar rahi hai?' For me it's embarrassing as I am with my mom-in-law most of the time."

Dolly is still not sure whether she wants to do more serials or go back to Canada. "I have got a lot of offers for Punjabi films. But I am not sure whether I'll do films or serials. I guess I'll be shuttling between India and Canada from now on." That's not such a bad thought. Having the best of both worlds is a good thing.

Models leave behind well settled careers to take to ramp

New Delhi,May 4(ANI): Glamour, fame, money-three things that make the world go round and if one gets a chance to have all of them in a short span of time, who would like to miss the opportunity?

That's precisely the reason why so many youngsters are taking to the ramp, leaving behind their well-settled traditional careers to earn a quick buck and rub shoulders with the who's who of the glamour industry. The models admit that the magnetic power of money and fame which come as a package deal with their new found professions pushed them to the world of glitz and glamour.

"I did my BCA (Bachelor of Computer Application), and I had plans to pursue an MCA (Master of Computer Application) but I started getting a lot of work, and it's handsome money. You earn quick, and it is simple. So then I thought that it is better that I start with this (modelling), because I can do an MCA anytime," said Bhanujeet Singh Sudan, a model. And yet they do not discount the value of their degrees which though for the time being are lying in the cold storage, would come handy as good back-ups when the short lived world of modelling comes to an end. "Modelling is a very is a very short-lived career, you have to be honest about it. I like to think that I have a Computer Science degree, my dad has a business, so I would like to take it as far as I can. I am not going to think in ten years time I'll still be a model...I'd be lying to myself. For a man it is a very short-lived career..it is a woman's world," said Upen Patel, a model.

"I have the brain, the head for business management. So, I have always been quite into that also. And once you are done with modelling, you need something to fall back on, so I guess that is where business management falls into place," said Rachel, another model.

Taking cue from some of the models who have made it big into the world of Bollywood, many others consider modelling as a stepping stone to acting.

It was a night to remember. From strawberries, to water melons, to grapes to oranges... everything was on stage.

The "Pop", "Burst" and "Cursh" look embodied all the models who sashayed down the ramp on the grand finale of the Lakme India Fashion Week in New Delhi on Monday.

As the week-long extravaganza came to an end, three funky designers Aki Narula, Anamika Khanna and Anshu Arora Sen presented their interpretation of "Fruit Shock" -- a riot of colours, music and action.

Sashaying down the ramp were the three faces of Lakme -- Indrani Dasgupta, Yana Gupta and Katrina Kaif.

The first to go was designer Anshu Arora Sen who presented "Pop". Her clothes were quirky and fun, with strings, plastic ribbons and painted fruits attached to them.

Carrying forward the mood to the beat of some heavy techno music was Aki Narula's collection, "Crush".

Dominated by snazzy prints and texturised fabrics, Aki's collection was playful and cheered by his peers -- designers Rohit Bal, Manoviraj Khosla, Wendell Rodricks and Ritu Kumar.

Last up was Anamika Khanna with "Burst" as models with designer earmuffs swayed down the ramp. Her clothes, which seemed full of energy, had vivid colours and were heavily texturised.

Narula, whose designs interpret a common man's daily life, said he was inspired by juicy fruits.

"The inspiration came from fruit shock and later crush and strawberry and water melons which were the part of fruits I was assigned. I used the colours and textures of the fruits," said Narula.

Khanna, who used a lot of sequins, said she went over board to present her ensembles.

"It was kind of an overboard collection where where we went crazy..layering, text, over work, over applique, over everything...but aesthetically, it was very satisfying to me," said Khanna.

The finale was the most exciting part of India's biggest fashion party, which the industry expects would have generated one million rupees more than last year. Designers, who have already bagged contracts from international fashion houses like Browns, call this year's show, happening for the fifth year in a row, as the most successful ever.(ANI)
