India's favourite 'Bhabhi' back to reel life

MUMBAI: Come Monday Jan 29, UTV produced serial 'Bhabhi' on Star Plus would see the come back of one of Indian Television's favorite bhabhi, Saroj played by the adorable Dolly Sohi. Bhabhi is an unrequited love story set in a classical mould, a story of conflicting value systems in a contemporary consumerist society. The Bhabhi crew has two reasons to celebrate, one is to have Saroj aka Dolly back after a gap of more than a year & the completion of 1000 episodes this month.

It was the unvarying love and remembrance by the UTV team, which kept in touch with Dolly that got her back with a bang. Confesses Dolly "I realized how much my team loved me and missed my nonattendance as a part of the caste, along with the numerous mails from my fans who have always bestowed me with colossal affection consistently even when I was in Canada". Having got to spend a lot of time with her family Dolly took complete rest aboard in contrast to her demanding and hectic life in Mumbai.

Having settled in Canada after martial bliss Dolly aka Saroj left the show, which was artistically portrayed through the occurrence of Saroj taking Samadhi parting from all the worldly materialistic tie-ups. Now her track that airs on Mon Jan 29 would begin from Reshma, Saroj's mother-in-law who takes a pilgrimage to Vaishnodevi, where she stumbles upon an absolutely radiant Saroj (her very own daughter in law) who has given up all worldly processions and become a recluse.

She is busy taking care of the poor and needy. Reshma is ecstatic, she tries talking to Saroj and begins requesting her to come back home to help sort the crisis in the Chopra family. Saroj in her new Avtaar of a Jogan appears to be unaffected by the course of events that are unfolding in the Chopra family. Will she be able to find solutions to the problems of the Chopra family to find watch Bhabhi Mon- Thurs 1.30 pm with repeat at 7 pm.

On being solicited about one thing she missed the most about India she quickly responds without pondering, "After leaving India it was Bombay's fast Life that I missed the most in Canada, a place where everything happens on the appointed time compared to the busy unscheduled dynamic Mumbai life" says Dolly who bunged watching the serial after she felt her absence in the serial who initially was ecstatic when the show being broadcasting from September 2006.

Dolly's parents especially her mother has been upbeat about this come back along with her UTV serial crew, which boosted her morale on giving her first shot with the same energy and enthusiasm post her protracted gap. With a lot of expectation from this Indian Bhabhi, Dolly promises to deliver her level best and cover up for all the emptiness that her fans must have encountered in the past one-year.

Three down

The lead actors of Bhabhi, Shubham, Pariva and Vishv quit in less than three months.

Pariva
The producers of Bhabhi, (UTV) were in for a rude shock when three prominent actors quit the show in less than three months. After Mohit Raina (Shubham) left the show, Pariva (Alpa) and Puneet Sachdev (Vishv) followed suit. Reason? They were all unhappy with how their roles were shaping up in the serial.

Says Puneet, "I acted in this serial for almost two years. My character had shaped up quite well initially, but later, it began to stagger. I spoke to the production house but they couldn't assure me of an exciting track. I had to take a stand, and decided to leave."

Puneet
Pariva (Puneet's girlfriend in real life and co-actor) says, "My character was not growing as I had expected. So, I left the show to hunt for better projects." Meanwhile, Pariva was offered to play the role of Samyukta in Prithiviraj Chauhan (Star Plus). But even that role didn't work out well and the actress had to quit. Pariva adds, "I was supposed to play the young Prithviraj Chauhan's love interest, Samyukta. But unfortunately, even after several episodes, Prithviraj's character has refused to grow from infancy to youth. So, despite being a part of the promotional activities, I had to quit. How long could I have waited," she adds. While Puneet is currently acting in Kuch Apne Kuch Paraye (Sahara One), Pariva has Saathii Re (Star One) to fall back on.

Rucha Gujrati, who graduated to play the central character, after Dolly Sohi (Bhabhi) left the show, is also sceptical about her future in the serial. She says, "When I heard that Dolly will be back in the
Rucha Gujrati

show, I expressed my doubts regarding the growth of my character. But I have been told that Dolly will just play a cameo. But then you never know…"

However Bhakti Tagde, creative head of the show, seems to be unaware of these development. She says, "Their characters are not active right now. The focus will be now on Dolly Sohi's character instead."

But a source in the production house insists that they are facing difficulties because of this mass exodus. "Puneet's character has been replaced while those of others' have been put on hold for the moment. We will have to conduct several auditions before we zero in on somebody. It's a difficult exercise particularly because there is hardly an episode bank."

'People like Dolly Sohi have tried to sabotage my image'
ROSHNI OLIVERA

How is it playing an elderly character?
Being in late 20's and playing 50 is not only challenging but also a self-discovery as an actor. I have done and still doing a lot of introspection in this regard. The compliments and appreciation that I have received from the audience, my producer and the channel is a yardstick for me to grow.
You aren't doing too many roles. Are you choosy about your work?
Frankly speaking, I am here to make a niche for myself as an actor who will be remembered for his versatility — someone who did things differently. And for this one needs to sacrifice a lot of work coming your way. I know what I can offer as an actor, but its yet to be explored. Honestly, I am here to be the best and the best is yet to come.
What about the recent Dolly Sohi controversy where you allegedly got a bit too close for comfort during a shoot?
Dolly Sohi's episode is nothing new to me. There have been instances in the past where people close to me have tried to sabotage my image and my career. They do not realise that when they are pointing a finger at the other person, the rest of the fingers are in their direction. The ratio is 1:3! If I were to define the height of hypocrisy, I would say it's Dolly Sohi.
What are the kind of roles you would like to do?
It may sound like a cliche but films are my childhood dream. I left my family, education and home in Delhi to achieve my dreams. Television happened to me and made me a household name. Today I feel lucky that I can choose roles. But I am waiting for something really challenging which would redefine Manish K Goyal. As far as films are concerned, it's my passion and once I step into films it will be for eternity.
With a busy schedule how do you manage time with your family?
As I said earlier, I am fortunate enough to choose my roles and therefore the major advantage I have is that I can spend quality time with my family.
What's your idea of chilling out?
I am totally a family man. My idea of chilling out is being with my family. My wife is an excellent cook and I think the tea she makes is the best I have ever had. Watching Aryaveer, my son, grow is the most fascinating experience. I record each and every of his move on my handy cam. Well if I have to define my idea of chilling out in three words — its my cosy home, my wife and my son.

It's such a relief that Mannish is not around!'

Dolly Sohi, who's back from Canada, is glad that Mannish Goyal is no
more part of her serial

RESHMA S KULKARNI

She's back, Canadian accent in place et al! Dolly Sohi, better
known as Saroj from Star Plus' Bhabhi, who had declared that she'd
hung up her boots after she got married to a businessman from
Canada, is back on the scene after a year-long hiatus. "It was more
of a vacation really! All I did in the past one year was to eat,
sleep to my heart's content and roam around Canada," reminisces
Dolly even as she adds, "But it feels good to be back. I was missing
all this hustle-bustle of shooting."
When asked if that was what prompted her to make a comeback,
Dolly says, "I was certainly missing the frenzy and more than that,
when I used to read the messages posted by fans on the internet
sites saying that they wanted the original Saroj back, it would tug
at my heart. Then I got pregnant and suffered from a miscarriage,
which put me in depression. That was when my husband suggested that
I should consider going back to work." reveals Dolly, who says that
she was overwhelmed with the reception she got. "I do miss my old
cast members who have now
been replaced but it's fun to be working with this unit too" says
Dolly.
One cannot help but ask her whether she is missing her 'good
friend' Mannish Goyal, now that he too is no longer a part of the
programme. "You bet I am" Dolly remarks tongue-firmlyin-cheek, even
as she bursts out laughing, "It's such a relief that Mannish is not
around. Misunderstandings happen between many costars and I was
prepared for that. But if a person does not have the maturity to
deal with those misunderstandings in a dignified manner such as
Mannish did, it spoils my peace of mind completely and puts me off
that person for life! Can you imagine, Mannish has not stopped
talking about our fracas till date? I recently read an article where
he said that I wanted to sabotage his career! But I believe in
letting bygones be bygones. In fact, I don't think Mannish Goyal
warrants so much importance. As of now, I'm happy being back and all
I'm looking forward to, is being accepted by my audience once more,
which I'm sure will happen."

Dolly Sohi is back again in Bhabhi. The actress quit the show after she got married and shifted base to Canada, but the acting bug didn't leave her. After a little more than a year she is back to India and the soap that got her immense recognition. Talking about her decision she says, "Initially I did miss acting and the fast life of Mumbai.

Though I didn't plan to return to acting I kept in touch with the producers of Bhabhi. They were quite keen that I come back into the show. And when I told them that I was coming on a long holiday to Mumbai, they decided to bring back Saroj and requested me to play the character."

When she quit, Saroj was shown as becoming a sanyasin. Now she returns as the spiritual guru of the Chopra parivar, which is falling apart because of the growing tension between Nehal and Megha. "Gradually the character will lead a normal life and become an important member of the family," reveals Dolly.

When asked what her husband has to say about this she says, "I have taken his permission to work in serials and I will be shutting between Mumbai and Canada every six months. I am open to good roles and am looking at doing some good work," adding that she misses her husband a lot. "But we are in touch and speak on the phone twice every day." It seems Dolly is madly in love with both acting and her husband and can't do without either of them.

Richa Gujrati who plays Suhana in Bhabhi is not a happy girl these days. When Dolly Sohi, quit the serial, Richa became the main protagonist in the show and everything centred around her. Unfortunately for her Dolly has now returned to the serial and all the importance is being directed towards her again.

Earlier, everyone on the sets thought that Dolly was just making a guest appearance as she now lives in Canada, but the actress has suddenly realised the importance of having a career, is back to stay on the show. Now this has left Richa wondering what will happen to her. After all its not a nice feeling to go from playing the central character to a not so important character.

Make-overs, change-overs and voice-overs have kept the afternoon show Kumkum going ..........

Location: The sprawling lawns at Kamalistan Studio is where Kumkum's sets have been created. The scene has Kumkum (Juhi Parmar) meeting her son Sharman (Gaurav Kapoor).

Gift of the garb: Playing a village belle with a ghunghat et al and a Haryanvi dialect to match is Parmar. Hello, where's Kumkum? Parmar laughs, "I'm thrown out of my house by my daughter-in-law. So I come back in the garb of a maid and expose her true colours. Right now, I am Santo, the household maid." Her make-over is good enough to fool anybody. Recently, a group of fans were fooled too when they couldn't recognise Kumkum and mistook her for some junior artiste in village attire. Scene of the day: Kumkum's son Dhruv (Vivaan Bhatena) is unaware of his wife Antara's (Sonia) ploy to throw his mother out of the house "With her disguise, Santo wants to expose Antara's true colours to Dhruv. In the scene we are shooting, Kumkum's second son Sharman has learnt of the ruse and has come to meet her secretly," explains Juhi. Changing faces: There's a new face in Kumkum. Replacing Sayantani Ghosh is Sonia in the role of Antara. "I have mostly played negative roles in serials from Hare Kanch Ki Chudiyan and Tumhari Disha to Bhabhi but I don't mind them because there's more scope to perform. Of course, I wish for a positive part too some day," says Sonia.

Sneak preview Kumkum has completed 945 episodes. The story is about Kumkum, who was earlier mar ried to Jatin (Anuj Saxena), but on his death is married to his brother played by Sumit (Husein Kuwajerwala). The generation leap happened after three-and-a-half-years. Parmar has a Haryanvi teacher on the sets to get her diction right

"I am thrown out of my house by my daughter-in-law. So I come back in the garb of a maid and expose her true colours. Right now, I am Santo, the household maid..-juhi"

"I got a warm welcome from everyone"

The original bhabhi of the small screen - Dolly Sohi is back to her true calling.

Almost a year back, this actor of Star Plus' Bhabhi fame, bid adieu to television, as she got relocated to Canada post marriage to software engineer Avneet Dhanowa.

But for an actor her creative juices have to keep flowing. And thus, Dolly, "after seeking the permission of her hubby and in laws", jumped at the golden opportunity of making a comeback in her claim to fame show!

In an exclusive conversation with Prashant Golecha, this happy-go-lucky artist waxes eloquent about her return, shuttling between to countries and, but of course, her ex-costar - Manish Goyal!

"I will keep traveling to and fro or may be a bank of episodes can be worked out" - Dolly Sohi

What instigated your decision to re-enter Bhabhi?
Actually I had a miscarriage some time back and went into a depression. I was in touch with UTV guys and they enquired about my intentions to make a comeback in Bhabhi. I gave it a thought, took permission from my husband and in laws, who were all supportive of the idea, discussed my terms and conditions, and everything fell into place. So here I am!

But you are based abroad. So how difficult will it be to manage your personal and professional life?
I will keep traveling to and fro or may be a bank of episodes can be worked out. My husband is abroad so obviously I'll keep flying there.

How's your track shaping up this time around?

My character, Saroj had turned jogan when I left. So the story will pick from there. I'll encounter Shoma Anand's character who will narrate the flashback post my exit from my house. With the intention of resolving all the unrest, I come back, and from there on my track will develop.

So what will be the fate of the current bhabhi on the show, Rucha Gujrati?
As of now, Rucha doesn't have a track in the show. Her character is dead after a fall in water.

With Shoma Anand in her first innings in Bhabhi

How was the first day of shoot?
It was a warm welcome from everyone. I felt the same I used to, as if it was only a week's holiday!

Do you buy the adage that marriage hampers an actor's career?
Not at all! People say it is difficult but I don't buy it. TV caters to the family audience and one's personal life doesn't matter to them as they relate more to characters.

Tell us about your life in Canada?
I live in Victoria, Canada. It was like a full year vacation; I partied, shopped and did everything that I felt like which I couldn't when I was in Mumbai. And yes, as there are a lot of Indians in Vancouver, who did recognize me. I was also in touch with Mumbai and this industry, courtesy a few close friends like Raymon Kakkar (my Bhabhi co-star).

"Whatever happened between us was very stupid" - With her ex-costar Manish Goyal

Oh, does Manish Goyal feature in that list?
Hey everyone's asking me about Manish. (laughs). My response will be, 'no comments'. Whatever happened between us was very stupid. When in Canada, one fine day while surfing the net, I came across his interview where he stated, 'People like Dolly Sohi have sabotaged my image'. I just couldn't help laughing. My husband was nearby and I told him that Manish still remembers me even after I have left Mumbai (breaks into a laugh again).

Would you like to meet him now?
I don't mind (she chuckles).

Coming back to Bhabhi, is Manish too making a comeback?
With what I have shot, I don't think so!

Any advice to actresses who want to tie the knot?
Marriage is highly recommended. Every girl should become someone's bhabhi!

What women want

Shilpa Saklani (Ganga From Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi): I believe that women could and should celebrate Women's Day everyday. In the past few years it has been observed that women have become quite liberal in their thinking. They have become independent and are ready to accept and face challenges. I would like to spend this day with someone who recognizes and honours me as a woman. In this case it would be my husband because he accepts me just the way I am. My ideal woman would be my mother and my mother-in-law. But I get inspired by the slightest of good any woman does.Smriti Irani(Tulsi from Kyunki Saas bhi Kabhi bahu thi): I believe that we should celebrate every woman who is educated and financially liberated. Be it a working woman or a housewife. Women rarely take time off for themselves. Its nice if they celebrate this day that is made available exclusively for women. On this day I will be delivering a lecture on Womens Empowerment in Delhi. I get inspiration from my mother and books like Little Women.Nandini Singh (Kesar from Kesar): Issues like female infanticide need to be tackled and we as educated people should do something in action to stop this all together. There is no point just sympathizing. And we require more than a day to eradicate this problem. I feel that when issues like these are resolved only then should Women's Day be celebrated. My ideal woman is Indira Gandhi. She was a woman with a strong personality who held her post with pride and dignity apart from being a mother. Mona Wasu (Miilee from Miileee): I don't believe in such days. I think the whole concept of liberation of women is misinterpreted. There is no such day as Man's Day is it? I think that we should all celebrate Human's Day first. I guess that there are many issues that we as human beings face that need to be tackled.Anita (Anjali from Kavyanjali): Everyday should be celebrated as Women's Day. Today's women are not male-dominated. Its no longer a man's world. Indian women are changing for a fact . You have women who are 30+ who are single, doing well in their jobs and are financially independent. They are even looking after their entire family. My idol woman is my mom who is so open-minded and liberal in her thinking, who supports me in my decisions.Mrinal Kulkarni(Sonpari from Sonpari): Womanhood should be celebrated everyday by letting men know our worth. Women today are aware of what woman power is. My advice to women is that they should be more focused when making personal choices. I would advise them to try not to be a super woman. Just be and act the way you are. I have no ideal woman in mind because each person is unique and there is always something new to learn from different people.Juhi Parmar (Kumkum from Kumkum): I feel women today are educated, independent and at par with men. I am proud of the fact that women are progressing in different walks of life. Be it the entertainment world or the corporate world women are dominating in every area. I don't want to sound clichd but the woman that I admire and draw inspiration from is Mother Teresa. She worked selflessly for the poor and downtrodden in spite of being a foreigner.Rucha Gujarati(Suhana from Bhabhi): Women's day is something very special and makes me want to work even harder. I will pamper myself with some chocolates and a good dinner with my loved ones. I don't think that any single woman could be an idol to me because it limits my thought process. I wish I had the wisdom of Mother Teresa, the power of Indira Gandhi, the strength of Jhansi Ki Rani and the beauty of my mother. All these women make me want to be a bigger and better person in life.

Abhi Dolly banegi producer!
By: Shaheen Parkar
March 2, 2007

The small screen's Bhabhi, Dolly Sohi, may have been away from the acting front after her marriage and relocation to Canada but this hasn't deterred her from pursuing TV, albeit in a different role.

The actress plans to float a production house along with her brother, Surendra Singh Sohi. "This is something that I had been thinking about for long.

It is still in the initial stages but we have begun the spadework for it," she points out. Incidentally, Dolly's sister Amandeep Sohi, also acts in serials "so, she too is familiar with the telly set-up."

Similar line

Why a production house? "For the last nine years all that I have only done is act. There is nothing else I know or can do.

I don't see myself in the nine-to-five grind anywhere and the thought of working for someone in Canada is not my cup of tea either.

There is not much on the acting front for Asians in Victoria, where I am based. So the best thing for me is to do something on similar lines."
Dolly, who is currently in Mumbai till the month-end, has been giving a serious thought to the production idea.

"As I am here, I am trying to do all the groundwork. It will be in my name but my brother will see to the day-to-day operations.

Though I will be based overseas, once it takes off, I can visit Mumbai more often," chuckles Dolly.

Bhabhi cameo

The actress was recently seen in a comeback cameo in the Star show Bhabhi. "I shot for 10 days only.

Though the cast and crew have changed since I called it quits in 2005, I was received very warmly.

As the producers (UTV) knew that I would be in the city for a while, they offered me a role.

I wanted to be in Mumbai after my pregnancy that went wrong last year. I was extremely depressed. But what has happened has happened."

Besides shooting and catching up with friends, Dolly also visited her hometown Punjab. "My brother recently got engaged.

His wedding is in November and I will be back then with my hubby (software engineer Avneet Dhanowa)," informs Dolly.
