Things that irk me about 'Begusarai'

I don't know why, but there's this feeling of disconnect that has crept in my mind as far as this show is concerned.

In the beginning, they started off with so much potential. But they quickly went down the drain with some done to death tracks.

Some things that irk me-

1. The love triangle:

I mean, can you employ a device more cliched? It's another thing that it's a love triangle only by name, because Priyom doesn't have romantic feelings for Poonam at all. Kahe ka love triangle?😕

2. Characterization-

The characterization has been inconsistent and unrelatable many a time.

a. Phoolan Thakur-

The makers need to explore more of his character. I do find his style of functioning a bit confusing at times, but he is probably the most fascinating of the lot.

He is noble, brave and daring to sacrifice all for his ideals. He is the raja who holds the welfare of his praja over all. Granted.

But I do need to see the family man side of him. I have never seen him interacting with the women in his household, like a scene with Guddi or Maya. He doesn't reprimand Mithilesh or Priyom for their colourful lifestyle. He seems to have begotten his children like Kunti Ma, because he makes absolutely no mention of his partner/spouse😆

And yesterday, I found him to be almost indifferent to the plight of his grandchildren, though he kept saying that they were his "jaan". Want to see more of his personal side. And also his exploits as a raja tackling issues in Begusarai and butting heads with others.

b. Laakhan-

Now I have to say, I utterly dislike the breed of angry young men who sashay on our TV screens. But I do find this one interesting, because the makers actually dared to portray him as emotionally abusive and a shade darker. It's the same case as in real life, where possessive husbands and boyfriends claim to love their partners but wreak misery on their lives in the name of love. Woh sab theek hai.

But it was too soon, in my opinion, to set the stage for a confrontation between him and his brothers. They should have stretched this a bit further, both in terms of how his bond with his family declines and how his junoon for Poonam increases.

c. Priyom-

Arguably my second favorite character after Phoolan. I really like the portrayal of male characters who care for what the women in their lives think and what they desire. My all-time favorite when it comes to this particular prototype is Mr. Darcy, who combines chivalry, a sense of enigma, and soulfulness under that seemingly arrogant exterior😳

And so I DO like the noble Priyom who cares and respect women. But he has been too uni dimensional off late. Endow him with some follies (albeit relatable ones), apart from his promiscuity, which despite humanizing him is rather off-putting .

And add some much-desired intensity to his scenes with Poonam, for gods-sake. The actors have a good chemistry and are portraying their roles well. But some emotional angst and introspection on his side would be nice. He got the girl way too easily, didn't even have to work for it!😉

3. No police, no law and order, no rival factions-

I do agree that some factions of the police force are corrupted. The recent incident wherein a brave journalist was burnt alive by a minister in UP with the full complicity, if not the nonchalance of the police is a case in point.

But I find it hard to digest that no police authorities, even corrupt ones, make an appearance in the show. Murders happen everyday, and there is a torrent of violence and bloodshed. Lekin policewale yahaan aakhri scene mein bhi nahi aate😆

Same applies for rival factions- it'd be fun to see some other Thakur, equally rich and powerful, albeit an immoral one, at loggerheads with Phoolan. It would enhance the dramatic possibilities. I know that this show is about the internal rifts caused by zar, zoruand zameen, but still...

The character whose father was killed by Phoolan, for example. He needn't have been killed so easily. He could have played the role of Iago by slowly and steadily poisoning Lakhan's mind against his uncle and cousins.

4. Women characters-

I appreciate the show for daring to delineate a wide range of characters- the naive and the powerless, who have internalized patriachy and its workings (Poonam and her mom, Maya and Chotti Amma), the spunky, who dare to question patriarchy ( Guddi, Danger Daadi😆 and Najma) and the artful and manipulative seductress, who uses her body to get her way with the men (Bindiya), and the materialistic and spiteful Rekha. Especially, good job with Najma- nice to see a Muslim woman with agency and mobility, having independent thoughts, going to college and freely moving on her scooter.

But is it too much to ask, if I wanted Maya and Poonam to grow a spine and give it back to the men in their lives? Please endow the latter in particular with some spunk ASAP. Female viewers like to relate with the female protagonists, and I for one can't relate with Poonam, though I empathize with her.

***Yet, I would like to commend the makers for going ahead with an unconventional theme and milieu. It's the only show I watch on TV. The rusticity, quirkiness and the exotic nature of Begusarai has been portrayed well, and all its characters, be it male (Phoolan, Mithilesh, Lakhan, Priyom) or female (Bindiya, Daadi, Guddi, Poonam, Maya, Najma) have been sketched well.

If you avoid cliched tracks and give us some interesting interplay between the characters, and their power struggles and passions with this interesting setting as the backdrop... the show will become all the more engrossing and intriguing. 😃⭐️

There is absolutely no triangle whatsoever in this series. Only Poonam has got some feelings, two boys are totally not into it.

For me, Phulan Thakur is THE most fascinating, intriguing & well-sketched character of this series. He is the ideal king, whose top priorities are his morals & his subjects and he is ever ready to sacrifice anything for them. I agree that he never properly interacts with the ladies-in-the-house, apart from his Amma and his wives are never being mentioned. Off-late he is being portrayed like an idiot w.r.t. matters related to Bindiya. Hope this character along with Mithilesh' are not butchered in future.

PT & BT run a parallel administration in the district and people do obey them out of fear & respect. But till now, how come not even a single person (apart from Chuna Yadav), who does not belong to the Thakur clan or their henchmen, (I mean politicians, bureaucrats, police, any rival faction, normal citizen) has ever been shown taking an action or a decision which is not in favor of the Thakurs !! This implies that each one of them is either corrupted or too coward to go against these guys or a combination of both. This is simply impossible; since even if the Thakurs have annihilated any rival faction and heavily bribed all the politicians to turn deaf, dumb & blind to their deeds, there must be at least a few persons (either bureaucrats or police or may be normal citizens) who are intelligent, courageous, confident and perseverant enough to take on with the Thakurs. May be the creatives are storing this track for future.

I so wish that Maya & Poonam grow their vertebra and soon enough. Poonam should get a voice, should concentrate on her studies and the prospect of her future career as she has been portrayed as a brilliant & studious student. She should definitely pay Lakhan back with interest. Can a self-sustaining Poonam be married off later to a worthy guy outside the Thakur clan ?
Maya should simply leave Mithilesh and raise the kids of her own (I don't think that Lakhan has killed the kids, as his puppet master would definitely not let him do that at any cost.), which seems next to impossible as off now since the Thakurs are very powerful & she has not got any education as such; but would be really an out-of-the-box track to watch.

Another character is Manchita. Even after knowing how Lakhan is abusing Poonam year after year he turned himself blind & mute since he is loyal to PT. But the same person remains inactive when his son is functioning as a pet to Lakhan. Gender bias or loophole in the character itself !!!

Thanks for the reply, Chandrima. As always, you make a neat and cogent argument.👏

Completely agree with each and every word of your post.

1. There is no love triangle, and the montage showing Poonam with her two suitors needs to be dispensed with ASAP. They need to have a collage of most characters, who define various shades of Begusarai, or something like that.

2. I am fascinated by Phulan, because his traits are definitely endearing, and Narendra Jha does such an awesome job by endowing the character with stature and nobility. Phulan and Mithilesh need to be shown more, and I for one am looking forward to their personal and ideological conflicts.

3. Yeah, definitely. I am downright bewildered by the absence of bureaucrats, a police station, rival factions... even a constable in Begusarai. In the last 10-15 episodes, an entire family was burnt to death, and two of Mithilesh's men were drowned. But no one cares!😕 There should be a delineation of how Phulan's mores and way of administration conflict with that of institutionalized governance in Begusarai, or at least a nexus between the two or something.

4. I am very vocal about the fact that Poonam and Maya need to assert themselves. It is disheartening to see not even a demur from the two of them. Poonam did try the passive-aggressive mode with Lakhan, but that led her nowhere.

BTW, what do you think happened to the kids? I also concur that they were not killed. And Poonam of course will not die at Mithi's hands, but who will save her? Any predictions about the track?😳

@ Chandrima

And I also think that the puppet master may be one of the three:

1. Phulan's wife (Wait, you mentioned in your post that he had wives...perhaps I missed that bit!)

2. Maya (don't ask:) )

3. Manjeeta- Find his loyalty to be too unbelievable sometimes.

Yeah, another thing that irks me about the show- lack of attention to detail.

1. Manjeeta doesn't condemn his son's rebellion and his siding with Lakhan?

2. Mithilesh, as an anxious parent should have ideally accompanied everyone to fetch his kids. They should've had a scene showing Phulan asking him not to come or something.

No no...I was mentioning about Bindiya, since currently Lakhan is merely acting as a puppet to her only. Regarding that invisible puppet master, my bet goes for either Bhushan Thakur as he is too good to be true or one of PT's wives.

Yes, with all probability PT has got two wives. Mithilesh is the son of the first wife and the rest belongs to the other one. Somebody else pointed that out to me earlier. When Priyom executed that cycle theft incident, Mithilesh uttered something in the line "lagta hai ki sirf maa hi nehin hamaare baap bhi alag alag hain".

1. Regarding the montage, so many members are ranting on the same for so long.

2. Narendra Jha and Darshan Dave are brilliant as PT and MT respectively. They have literally given the characters their respective lives. Both of them together on the screen is a treat to watch. Hope they get and share more screen-spaces.

3. That's what my point is. Seems bureaucrats, police, judges, lawyers, court and above all constitution of India are non-existent in the district itself.

4. kab woh shubhdin ayega !!!! I am tired of watching those all-enduring, all-sacrificing, silent dukhiyaari ablaa naari.

My take is nothing has happened to the kids. It's just to torment the Thakurs more and probably a try to force MT to break out of the clan. Lakhan is now being controlled by omnipotent Bindiya and she has got a very sharp brain which very well knows that she can't bargain anything in exchange of dead-bodies !!!

P.S. I agree with you on MT and I've mentioned this in my post last Friday as well. Astonishingly and shockingly he did not accompany the rescue party 😲 !!!! At least a small convo with the members should have been portrayed.

Wow, didn't notice that at all. Guess I wasn't listening properly. It's too mysterious that none of them talk about their mother(s). Something fishy!😃

And yeah, Bhushan is also an ideal candidate, he is too calm for his own good.
