This was a filler episode. The drumroll to the drama that will unfold next week. And if I forcefully banish images of Betty aka Saudamini torturing Anirudh, I think we have a lot to unpack here.
The Heera Mandi girls reluctance to take up the task of fighting for their own rights was expected and unsurprisingly, understandable. They have been brought up in circumstances that vilified education for women and denied them the right to progress. The idea that any progress is sacrilegious was ingrained in the women of the era and they learned it by the ear. NO questions were asked. Anirudh rightly deciphers there hesitancy and accepts it as he understands not everyone is like Bondita. Most accept this as the way of life and he lets them be. He doesn't force them to do this. He stands silent when Bondita connects the turn their lives had taken due to the reverse Hindi alphabet she wrote. Like he said in the last episode, he is no more their rakshak babu but a person who will support their choices. Even if it is for their own good, he will not be the Man who makes the choice for them.
Even today many women amongst us hold prejudices against our own sex and act on them. So many of us are educated and yet when we menstruate, we avoid the puja room or the temple. And this is the case of 2020. 1920 is a far worse case and I fully expected the girls to not agree to it. Women throughout the ages had been taught to be docile, subservient and invisible to everyone and yet be every where to do everything for her family. She had been taught to keep her head down and accept the life of misery and ignorance and subservience as a boon from God. and these girls come from a "sinned" place; they are at a worse place. If they can't fully get these rights in 2020 how could they expect to do so in 1920.
The episode \, like i said before is a filler. The emotional play and plea by Bondita was a brilliant move. In one move she honors the sacrifice made by Rasiya and shows the girls how mistaken they are by not fighting for the rights they deserve. She did what Anirudh couldn't. Had Anirudh done it would have been blatant manipulation and mansplaining. But Bondita here sends the girls into self introspection. Do they have the life Rasiya envisaged for them while she burnt with Tarabai's hell? Are they at a better place than they were? Are they running away from the solution while hugging onto the chains that bind them? And they see it as well.
ITV is nothing without drama and intrigue and a lot of mistakes. This show also has them, but yet it manages to stand out inspite of all that. Because it breaks the conventional setting of a big man coming to save the damsel in distress. Not every female lead has to be a Disney princess.
