Part 44

This part is all in Vidya's point of view. For Recap go to pg. 138

I didn't say much during the ride home. I sat in the dark backseat with Tushar, half listening to the discussion him and Sagar were having about the various cricket matches. Srav hadn't said more than three words since we'd left the restaurant.

"Here we are, Vidya." Sagar announced, pulling up in front of my house. "We have delivered you safely to your abode."

"Thanks everybody." I said. "I had a great time."

As I opened the door of the car, I half expected Sagar to get out and walk me to the door. After all, he was the person in the car who I had the closest connection to. But Tushar dutifully hauled himself out of the car and walked my up the steps to my front door.

"This was fun." Tushar said as I slid my key into the lock. "Hey, I'll see you around school."

"Right...see you." I gave Tushar a smile, and he bent forward and gave me a kiss on the cheek.

I slipped into the house and closed the door behind me. This night had been nothing like what I had expected. A week ago, if someone had told me that Tushar would be giving me a kiss on the cheek, I would have said it was more likely that I would win the lottery.

Now it had happened. And I felt let down. I didn't even care that Tushar hadn't asked me for another date. I was just glad to be inside my house, minutes away from scrubbing off my make-up and changing into a pair of soft, cotton pyjamas.

I walked into the den, where my parents were watching a classic movie. "I'm home," I announced.

My mom smiled. "Did you have fun, honey?"

I shrugged. "It was interesting."

"We want to hear all about it in the morning." Dad added. "But we won't make you give us a full story, until you've had a chance to sort out your thoughts."

I laughed. My parents had never asked me about something right away. Then again, I had never gone out on a double date on a Saturday night (or any other night, for that matter) before. This day was definitely one for the record books. Vidya had gone out with one of the most popular guys in school—and lived to tell the tale. There was only one problem. There wasn't much of a tale. No details. No giggled confessions or wistful glances. It was just...a date.

I trudged my way upstairs to my room, took off my dress, and put on my comfy p.j.s and went to the bathroom. I let the water run, and scooped some water in my hands and splashed my face. Patting it dry with my towel, I felt a sense of relief. As I was still patting it dry, the phone on my nightstand rang. It's gotta be Rushvi or Ruchi I guessed. No one else called my house after ten o' clock.

"Hello?" I answered, preparing myself for the half-hour grill session that would inevitably ensue.

"Hey, I hope you're not asleep yet." The voice didn't belong to either of my friends. It was Sagar.

I placed my hand over my heart, willing it to stop beating so wildly within my chest. My blood pressure felt like it had risen astronomically during the last two seconds.

"Hi Sagar. No...uh, I'm not asleep yet." And now that you've called, it will probably be another three hours before I wind down enough to close my eyes," I added silently.

"I just couldn't wait until Monday to hear what you thought about the date." Sagar told me. "Was it everything you had hoped it would be?"

I thought about lying and saying, yes, the date was beyond my wildest dreams. But what was the point? Tushar and I, as a couple, were never going to happen.

"I had a great time...but to tell you the truth, I don't think the date part between Tushar and me went that well."

"I know Tushar was being totally obnoxious, but hey, maybe he was nervous. He's probably never been out with a girl as cool and smart as you are."

I smiled. Leave it to Sagar to say something totally nice at exactly the right moment. He always came through.

"There's nothing wrong with Tushar." I assured him. "But—well, I don't think we really clicked the way I had hoped for."

"You didn't?" Sagar didn't sound as disappointed as I thought he would. Probably because Tushar had already told him on the drive home that he never wanted to see me again.

"I think it'd be best if we forget the whole thing," I suggested to Sagar. "Tushar, the transformation, all of it. I mean, your term papers will be finished right on time, but let's just leave it at that..."

"No!" Sagar burst out. "We have to give it another shot!"

"Sagar—" I started, intending to tell him that I was happy with the progress I had made but that I thought I would be okay on my own from here on out.

"Things were just a little off tonight," He interrupted. "There was a weird vibe in the air. I think...I think there was too much pressure on all of us—especially you." He paused. "But I'll think of something to fix it. I swear!"

I closed my eyes and sank into my pillows. More than anything I wished I could tell Sagar that Tushar wasn't the one I wanted to go out with. I wished I could open my heart and tell Sagar that I had fallen for him—and for all of the right reasons.

But I couldn't. A relationship between Sagar and me was impossibility. He was in love with Srav, and that wasn't going to change. That much was obvious from the way they kept kissing each other during dinner.

"Come on Vidya..." Sagar urged. "Tell me you'll give Tushar another try. Please?"

I bit my lip. I couldn't say no. Not to Sagar. He had done so much for me, and he was so determined to help me that I didn't have the heart to say no.

"One more shot," I agreed finally. "But if things don't work out with Tushar and me, I'll live. Really."

On the other end of the phone Sagar breathed a huge sigh of relief. "You won't be sorry, Vidya. I know what I'm doing."

I almost felt like laughing. Sagar might know what he was doing. But I had no idea what I was doing...
