HUM JEET GAYE 12.9
It felt weird being back, especially since he seemed to attract stares from everyone. He sat on his desk trying to get accustomed to the feeling. Technically he'd only worked for one day and the accident had happened. He was stll apprehensive about the whole incident.
Saagar didn't reember much from the incident, but it hade come alive in his mind for some reason, in the form of a nightmare. He remembered only a few details from the nightmare, but he could still remember the fear that had come along with it.What stumped him even more was that he'd clearly remembered seeing Vidya in his nightmare.
He remembered Vidya in a car while he chased it in attmepts to save her. She had been calling out to him to help her, and he had tried but failed. He could still remember her pleading eyes as she plunged into a dark abyss.
In real life he had been in Vidya's place but didn't remember how his car had gotten out of control. He tried to remember but nthing came to him. he sighed frustrated as he rested his head against his hand.
"First day, and they are already working ou to the bone?"
Saagar smiled at the voice of his friend Tusshar, and rose to greet him. "No just lost in some thoughts. how come you're here?"
"Well you know that I am working on a book currently. I just had to stop in to see the publisher. Discuss some terms, and all that good stuff. So I thought I'd stop by and check on you. Also I happened to be hungry. There's no chance that my dearest bhabhi packed some of her delicious cooking for her oh so cute devar in lunch." Tusshar eyed the lunch box sitting on Saagar's desk.
"That's my lunch and she's not your bhabhi." Saagar said all in one tone.
"Ouch, I am hurt. I thought we were good enough friends that you considered me like the borther you never had. I know I do. Just because you don't want to share lunch doesn't mean you break a friendship for it." Tusshar pretended to be hurt.
"What the heck are you talking about?" Saagar looked at Tusshar "I never said anything like that, and you know you're my best friend."
"Then how come I can't call Vidya my bhabhi? You've been hanging around Surili too long. She's messing with your brains."
"Well because Vidya and I don't share that relationship. I don't recognize her as my wife, then how can I recognize our marriage to each other. I mean when you marry someone it's not a joke. You love that person, and that person in return loves you."
"You're not being fair. You've not even given Vidya a chance. Get to know her, maybe you will fall in love with her again."
"I love Surili. I was engaged to her..."
"Surili is nothing but an opportunist, and she doesn't love you or you her." Tusshar interrupted Saagar. "Personally I don't know what you see in her."
"Tusshar we've had this conversation many times before."
"And yet I haven't managed to get it in your loggerhead that you deserve better than Surili."
"You think Vidya is that better."
"Definitely."
"We have nothing in common. She's not really my type either."
"Hmm...maybe you haven't had a chance to know her. I mean stranger people get married."
"I'm not people. Vidya and me together will not work."
"Possible. I mean after all you are harder to love, but then again if she could love you when you were mad, then she might just be able to love you sane. If it doesn't work out, I'm always there. I'm definitely more likeable, and much more good-looking then you."
"I think my Saagar definitely wins hands down in the looks department." Surili smiled walking in and moving towards Saagar. She draped herself over him and kissed him on his cheeks.
"Surili, you have a problem standing I believe. You're always hanging off people, like a...what do you call it? Aah yes, a parasite."
"Tusshar..." Saagar tone warned Tusshar not to start again.
"Don't worry honey, he's just jealous that I called you better looking." Surili smirked at Tusshar.
"Sure. I'm going to head out Saagar. If I stay I might get diabetes with all the honey and sweetness. Well Saagar I'll see you later in the evening. Can you tell my bhabhi to make her delicious kheer for dinner."
Saagar nodded and said his goodbye.
"Eew. If I was married to you, I would insist that he never call me 'bhabhi'. Sounds tacky."
"I doubt he would call you bhabhi." Saagar didn't mean to sound derisive, but for some reason Surili's comment irritated him. Now that he thought about it, she had always been this way in terms of relationships. She's never taken the initiative to show the proper respect to his mother, or even taken the time to mingle with his family.
His ringing phone broke into his thoughts, and he excused himself to answer the call.
"Hello." He greeted into the receiver.
"Ji."
Saagar could recognize the shy and hesistant "Ji" anywhere. It could only be from one person.
"Vidya?"
Vidya again murmured a hesistant agreement on the phone, letting him know it was her.
She didn't know why he would call for her, but that was what Bharat had told her before handing her the phone and disappearing. She listened quietly to stactic waiting to hear with bated breath why he had called. She had run excited to take the phone, but now she hesistated. Maybe it was an emergency.
"Vidya?"
"Haan...woh aap.."
"Kya hua Vidya? Why did you call?"
"Aap theek hai na?"
"Haan, kyu?"
"Nahin mujhe laga ke aapko kuch ho gaya hoga. Apne woh phone...kaam pe sab theek hai na."
"Vidya sab kuch theek hai." Saagar said, then waited further for Vidya to speak but there was silence on the other side. He sighed then remembered what Tusshar had told him before leaving. "Vidya kya tum aaj khaane ke saath kheer bhi bana sakti ho."
Vidya felt elated at Saagar's request. He'd asked her to make her kheer. Maybe he remembered.
"Ji."
Saagar said bye and then replaced the receiver. Why had Vidya called? Why would she think something was wrong with him? He shrugged his thoughts and turned to Surili.
"I have to get back to work. I'll call you in the evening okay."
"Sure thing." As soon as she left Saagar went back to work.
At home Vidya smiled and hummed as she cooked for later that evening.
Bharat and Chinu watched from a distance happy with themselves. It had been their idea to place the phone call to Saagar. Apparently it had worked, because Vidya seemed much happier than what they had seen her in the past couple of days.
